That was my first "game" (if you want to call that performance a game), and that was a stinker! I really hope they play much better than this in R1. Failing to take marks and generally allowing Freo to run all over us, especially in that 2nd quarter. It almost made me regret getting out of bed relatively early on a Sunday Morning (the game started at 8am my time) to watch it.

On the plus side, my Watch AFL experience was surprisingly great. It was near HD quality for me, which was much better than I was expecting from a live stream from halfway across the world.

That commentary team though was awful, and as people have already pointed out, why was there a former Freo captain working the boundary, with no WC person there for balance?
And an Irons man too! Respect and condolences, brother.

We wont play finals this year . I have never felt this pessimistic. Even in the spoon year.

You know the last time we lost to Fremantle in pre-season by 62 points? 2006.

Didn't work out too badly that year.

This time last year Richmond had lost to Fremantle and Port by 50+ points in their matches.

If there is one thing that can be taken from pre-season it is never look too deeply into its results.

Rewind, FF, rewind, OMG, WTF , for the last 23 years and onwards, only the WCE can make Team Purple misrepresent themselves as a Non Amateur AFL team...

Beating us is their annual Grand Slam extravaganza, larger than Fleafos ego, slower than Sandis shadow, monkeyer than Ballas cheeky grin and
more suffering than Pavlovas career sacrifice.

It's not surprising that none of these guys are really ball-magnets now, none of them were really accumulators in juniors either. We seem to have an aversion to drafting pure midfielders who can find the ball.

Bingo.

The downside to having arguably of the greatest midfields of all time is that ever since we have been looking for players to recreate those roles rather than just looking for players who can play.

Our scores this preseason have been 56, 57 and 39. That's pretty dire.

Yeah that is a big warning flag isn't it?

It's not missing Kennedy either that is the issue (although it obviously impacts). We are completely breaking down in our ball movement on the wing.

All our strength in intercept marking means absolutely nothing if we are unable to move the ball from defence into attack.

The main squad did a main training session last night...might explain why they were in first gear all day.

That would give some explanation as to why we were looking cooked before quarter time, let alone the rest of the match.

Makes sense from a conditioning point of view, active recovery tomorrow and Tuesday then allows a solid 12 day tapering coming into Round 1.

Whether the psychological toll of having an inexperienced team getting pantsed by over ten goals to the cross-town rivals is worthwhile however remains to be seen.

I had wondered this. Hurns kicking was initially what made me think of high training loads. Was just too uncharacteristic.
Speculating obviously, but I think Simmos reaction at 3 qtr time would be due to the performance under stress and fatigue. It was non existent, and he wanted people to stand up.

This scenario is done regularly by even amateur teams, by pushing skills/decision making under strenuous scenarios, it helps ingrain the right responses/reactions. My interpretation would be 10 percent off in AFL means you get pantsed. I mean we weren't that bad against PA in game 1

(In all honesty im just searching for some silver lining to that sh*t show :drunk:)

Alarm bells ringing for sure. Edged Port and scored FA, flogged by Freo twice. Nothing positive about the pre season. No Naintaui or Kennedy for the Swans game and a real lack of experience in the middle where games are won and lost. Optus could be half empty sadly in a lot of final quarters this season possibly.

I wouldn't be putting any stake into these preseason games. There's a reason why the preseason GF was scrapped - these are, very literally, just practice matches.

Or, in other words, they're a dress rehearsal for the season proper.

A dress rehearsal for the season proper?
So West Coast's plan is to be witches hats for the season? Cool.

Don't know if there'll be any real benefit, but is it worth it to perhaps give some of the mids (or other players) that missed the scratch match an extra run on the weekend for EP (like Shuey, Gaff & Redden), considering they only played in only 2 preseason games, compared to the others? Obviously we felt like we needed to have an extra game, but those players didn't get to do that because we wanted to play some more of the kids in that game.

Sheed is strong for his size but to me he still doesn't have the frame of an inside mid. I can very well be proven wrong but i just can't see his body last 22 or more games at the coal face that or he is still going to play the same role he played last few years. If thats the case, its a bit disappointing that simmo see see's him more as a rotation.
