Dew definitely refused to give good game time to players because they challenges him and spoke up last year.

For me it a huge problem that Dew need to change or he won’t see the year out.

If he’s still sooking it’s up and not picking players that challenge him and the other coaches he will never be a successful coach.

It’s sound like he runs and hides from conflict instead of facing it head on
I think for all his strengths and upside that's his achilles heel as a coach

There's been a lot of positivity emanating from the SUNS players over summer. Part of that may be because they all think they're a good chance to play seniors. Most of them either played seniors last year or are likely to think they're better than players who did. There's a challenge to keep the group united, when players are overlooked for the senior team. Dew & the other coaches somehow have to sell the message that it is in everyone's best interests for the senior team to succeed. We don't want blokes in the 2nds hoping the seniors lose or get injured, because it gives them a chance to get a game. I don't really know what is going on with Brodie, but I hope he knuckles down & earns his spot in the seniors through good performance on the field & off. It would be such a waste to have him in the 2nds all year.

And .. we also want players dropped from the senior squad to embrace playing NEAFL - not report a minor injury , be rested until reselected , be managed etc etc.
Reduced injuries should result from an improved preseason - so a NEAFL flag should be a club goal.
It would be a true shift in culture if our NEAFL team could regularly field maximum Listed players without having to rely on top-ups (Academy or otherwise).

Lots of talk about Brodie so asked one of the players today why he didn’t get a game on the wkend he said because there’s guys ahead of him. Named Bowes and someone else (can’t remember the name) competing for the same spot. Said he should get a run soon though.

Also said Lemmens had surgery on his ankle today and will be out for about 8 weeks 😮

So the Lemmens injury was as feared. Horrible news because he’s had two good pre-seasons consecutively ruined by injury in the trials.
Brodie needs to be named against the Ugly Ducks and let’s see his character on full display in Lismore.

Sux about Lemmens. How is he gonna drive Izak to training now?

Surely everyone that didn’t get a run last weekend will be first selected

Only people that are half a shout of playing early.
If I’m on the selection panel I’m not picking your Caleb Graham’s, Jacob herons etc..

Lemmens and harbrow 2 clear outs to bring the numbers down to requisite.
I wouldn’t be changing the whole side otherwise.

Need to see hanley, day & hombsch
Brodie and Holman the last 2 I’d consider.
Maybe young

The rest miss out for me.

Nobody likes to see injuries but Lemmens being sidelined will create a new dynamic where he isn't picked every week regardless of form which is what happened last year for him. So the result will be, I think, the entire team picked on performance now
I really want Brodie to be a favoured player and stay, he is our potential Josh Kennedy and has the body to go with it. I think he is unique in our group for his size and being an inside mid so we need to get him clicking and in favour for selection

R.e. Brodie ive also had it confirmed today that others are ahead of him on the pecking order and despite 3 different coaches he has struggled to improve in the areas asked of him. Also struggling to play any other role such as forward or back hurts his chances infront of selection committee every week. A see ball get ball type of player which isn't the approach the coaches are looking for.
As far as his attitude and questioning i cant confirm but the club is right behind him and wants him to succeed.

It surprises me, and other Lions board posters, that you’re coaching staff don’t appear to value the pure inside mid type.

We’re likely to play two or three pure insides mids in our team each week. Neale, Lyons and Mathieson.

Now if the discussion about Brodie was about not improving his kicking, or lowering his, etc that’s one thing, but asking some players to expand their game when it’s not in them, is a different matter.

I agree. I'd rather have an awesome inside midfielder, clearance specialist who can do that job perfectly rather than someone who is okay with clearances and his outside run and carry but not amazing at either. An excellent player is an excellent player - play them to their strengths, don't leave them out because of their weaknesses. It would be like Carlton not picking Cripps because he's not providing enough forward of centre - it makes no sense because he's exceptional at what he does

What does Horlin-Smith bring to us that Brodie cannot. I guess leadership on field but to me thats about it. I think.... Is Horlin-Smith more versatile than Brodie? can he play either end as well as mid? genuine question, Ive never followed him too much.

Could be way off, but I see Horlin-Smith as a solid backup player who shouldnt be selected in the best 22, but a guy that should drive training standards and keep these younger higher draft picks on their toes, and get a game when someone goes down.

Posted on twitter by someone viewing from a fantasy perspective. Self counted stats so exact accuracy potentially questionable.
Interesting insight.
Centre bounce attendances. There were 25 in total (21 goals plus start of each quarter)
Despite Miles low TOG he must have been in the centre bounce every time he was on field.

I like this mix, although would definitely like Ainsworth in there more frequently to add some dynamism.

Horlin-Smith can play multiple positions and is easily in our best 22

I feel like Horlin-Smith is getting written off a fair bit. Still can produce quality performances, last year against Port had 24 touches and kicking 2 goals, hopefully he can pull that out a few times this year for us.
