The only thing Watson has on Pendlebury is leadership. Anyone voting for Watson is extremely Bias
Even though he doesn't have the Captain tag, Pendlebury's leadership skills are rated extremely highly.

He is a future captain and was elevated to the 5-man leadership group prior to commencing his 3rd season at the start of 2008.

I'm guessing Maxwell will captain again next season and then hand it over for 2013.

I love Watson, think he epitomises what football is all about, but Pendlebury is in the top 3 if not the best midfielder in the game.

I'd love to have Watson at the pies but Pendlebury is the better player.

(Also Paddy love - Pendles is our vice-captain, so he doesn't lack leadership, but will probably never be the leader Watson is, so I see your point)

I never said he was a poor leader let Watson have this win. I have also spent this time hinking of categories Watson might be infront of Pendlebury. They are standing up in a tackle seeing as Pendlebury is rarely tackled and diging the ball out of the bottom of a pack and handballing.

Watson is one of my fav players but pendlebury is much better. The best player in the game atm and he is still so young. Pathetic thread is pathetic.

Pendle's by a bit,
Pendlebury is so natural, has everything you would ask for in a great player.
Watson is just pure hard work and heart. nothing comes easy for him, but to his credit, he gets there.

I as a Essendon supporter, am so proud of Watson, It has been like watching a catterpillar turning into a butterfly. Very few average (to begin with) achieve this.

No contest, Pendles easily, I actually think Pendles has surpassed Swan as the Pies best midfielder, he always seems to stand out in the big games for mine, and that's evidenced by 2 ANZAC medals and a Norm Smith

Not sure why everyone is making out like it's such a horrible comparison. Watson is a star, and one of the best midfielders going round. Pendlebury is the better player [better than nearly everyone this year], but Watson has come a long way this year.

In my honest opinion:

Swan is made to look better by his side
Pendlebury would star no matter which side he was in
Don't be silly.

Seriously, Dane Swan would perform to the elite level in any side.

It's debatable as to who is better between Swan and Pendles but to suggest Swan is made to look better by his side when he is arguably the premier mid in his side is utter rubbish.

3 BnFs, back2back AA, dominates almost every statistical category in the comp and simply cannot be beaten by a tag. He is in the top 3-5 mids of the competition if not the best. Pendles is rapidly closing.

Hocking sure kept him quite on Monday.....

Pendlebury easily I love Jobe but realistically to me he is a top 10 Midfielder in the comp at his best. Where as Pendles is a top 1-2.

Did an ok job. Certainly didn't beat him but managed to subdue him a little.

Swan's numbers still read 24 disposals, 4 marks, 7 tackles, 8 clearances, 14 contested possessions 2 inside 50s and 1 goal.

Hockings read 13 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 3 clearances, 8 contested possessions and 2 inside 50s.

Probably as good a job anyone will do on Swan.

I agree, I was probably one of the few who thought Swan was good on ANZAC day. Not great, not at his amazingly high accumulating best, but he sure had an impact. Had some pretty pivotal clearances did Swanny.

And did someone say Swan was made to look good playing in such a good side? You are aware that Swan has won the past 3 Copelands and Collingwood certainly haven't been a dominant side in all this time. Pendlebury and Swan are so hard to split, they complement each other so well too. Pendles is definitely the better defensive player though, great at applying pressure and tackling.
