Player Watch Joel Cochran

Because the extreme case would be necessary for Cochran to gain the physique of Reef. Football players burn an insane amount of calories on a weekly basis through games and training so it's incredibly rare to the point of impossible for any meaningful weight gain during the season.

Reef gained all that weight because his knee injury necessitated him not being in a position where he's doing a huge amount of aerobic workouts.

Also consider that Cochran is like 5 years younger than Reef so he's going not going to have a similar physique anyway.
Too extreme man too extreme!

A small addition Reef was also non contact through much of his rehab period so not being subjected to the residual impact of collisions allowing him to test his limits in the gym.

A lot to like in that hit-out from Cochran. Got schooled by Darling early, with the latter's experience and body positioning rinsing the young defender a few times, but he will take a lot from that. Got better as the game went on and looks ready to take his chance, which should come early.

If Moore is fit to play as per the latest report, do we still make room for Cochran?

So a backline of; Moore, Frampton, Maynard, Perryman, Quaynor, Houston and Josh or Pendles?

he must have spread that all round because i didnt really notice that his frame had put on that much, Hayes on the other hand, you can see he has thickened up , especially in his legs
Look at the photo of Cochran of when he got drafted and a recent photo of him, you’ll notice the difference.

He’s also 195cm so it won’t be as noticeable but you’ll see he’s made improvements in that area.

I wonder if they re-measure them after they've been drafted.
Joel was 195cms when drafted at 18. He might have grown another cm or two over the past 16 months.

With his debut on the horizon I was looking for the fundamentals in his game yesterday.

He is still a long way from properly ready or taking a spot from Howe or Frampton, but I don’t think he’s any worse defensively than Dean and held his own well enough when isolated yesterday against some experienced talls (aside from the moment v Dursma). The big issue I saw was that he’s a deer in the headlights when the play is in motion with hot potato the order of the day. That being said I think he can build on that with time at the level unlike say Parker who burns it on both fast and slow play.

It’s before his ideal time, but at least we aren’t going super small asking IQ and Maynard to both play tall when we'll be stretched as it is v St Kilda’s smalls.
I was seated near the pocket and got a good look at him for 2 x 1/4s
He plays the defensive system well and was useful on the last line of defence where we collectively stopped several goals by inches.
His kicking is good.

The one area that looked to need improvement was where to position himself against his direct opponent
He found himself on the wrong side of the contest 3 times that I saw.
That’s a coach able problem.

It’s early for Joel, but an experiment worth trying early that will pay dividends.
And we have Murphy, Goldsack and Howe to mentor.

My feeling is he is starting 23 bound.

Coming along nicely.

Would be further along if they had of played him weekly in defence in his first year. Dean and Glover (iirc) were prioritised and Cochrane played in a variety of positions

Hopefully a debut. Good week for it. Without King, Saints don’t have a lot of quality up front…

I'm still surprised the Swans let Cochers go so early in his football career, particularly when all players bar Oliver Dean TAS Tasmania Devils North Launceston were picked up.

As far as I can tell, Joel is out of contract this year.
Both Will and Charlie were given 2 year extensions, am wondering if Joel either isn't getting one or perhaps wants to leave?
Certainly hope that's not the case.
I just find it strange that he would not have been offered one as yet considering how much he has improved and what his potential is.

I have no inside goss. Crisp is expected to trigger a new year. In order I would like Frampton, Parker and Cochran to re-sign. The rest are a wait and see. A number of Collingwood interviews has resulted in a number of healthy Cochran comments. The only weaknesses appear to be not playing tall and not a clear position. I just like.

It wouldn't hurt to try Cochran as a forward - he kicked a goal from outside 50 in a practice match.
He can run, so he could give oppo backs the runaround and open up space.

He didn't show as much as the other 2 in the VFL last year. Both of them played senior games and Joel wouldn't have been close.

But I thought it was 3 year contracts for draftees? Or is that only first round draftees?

Top 20 picks are 3 years, 2 years for the rest.
