Fall Out Boy

Guest
This week Joel plays his 100th game for the club.

He'll be the second of our 1999 crop to reach 100 games, the first being Cameron Ling.

Well done Smithy.

Now start procreating, post haste.

There are a couple of young players (SJ, AM) who should take a leaf out of his book in regards to work ethic, what a great role model he is. Great player. Well done.

8. Joel Corey (99 games)
15. David Spriggs (69 games)
17. Ezra Bray (0 games)
23. Daniel Foster (17 games)
31. Paul Chapman (94 games)
38. Cameron Ling (108 games)
47. Corey Enright (78 games)

Players from the 1999 draft we picked up later.

Only the Ling pick was ours to begin with too, we traded Micky Mansfield and his contract to Carlton for the pick that got us Chappy whilst the pick that got us Boris came from the Colbert deal.

I've really taken to JC this year. My new favourite player. He really seems to play for the jumper as well which is a fine quality in a player these days. Here's hoping he's in the hoops for many years and games to come.

Interesting that 3 of them have played roughly the same amount of games.

Enright would be around the same games tally if he didn't cop injuries so often.

What a legend Corey is. Hopefully he can snag a couple of goals this week to top off a win for the club and end his yips in front of the big sticks.

Congats Joel.

5 1st round draft picks and only 1 is a quality player. Interesting. Just shows you need top 5 picks for genuine quality. After that its a raffle.

Joel Corey has been great this year. He just gets shown up when his team mates give the ball away with bad disposal and he gets caught 30 m in front of his opponent and he can't get back in time, which has happened a bit lately. Not his fault though. If he didn't run forward he would be unable to create. Is great at winning the ball. Something as a group we are good at, but we just struggle to hold onto it.

Never really saw him play. I am usually at the barwon club when the 2's are being played.

p.s. A totally useless bit of information. Ezra Bray and Damian Cupido are the only 2 15 year olds ever to represent Australia at the u17's in Ireland.

I think Ezra will have to hold onto that as his Footy highlight.

I think it's becoming more of a science now, with less and less duds going early, although there are still no absolute sure things.

1999 had a heap of depth, but a quite high number or relative busts (admittedly some due to injury) with early picks.

From the first round alone you have:

* Fiora (Pick 3)
* Damian Cupido (6)
* Danny Roach (7)
* Cadyn Beetham (9)
* Paul Koulouriotis (12)
* Travis Gaspar (14)
* David Spriggs (15)
* David Haynes (16)
* Ezra Bray (17)

There was quite some quality after pick 30 though:

* Paul Chapman (Pick 31)
* Daniel Giansiracusa (32)
* Mitch Hahn (37)
* Cameron Ling (38)
* Lindsay Gilbee (43)
* Corey Enright (47)
* Chance Bateman (48)
* Matthew Whelan (50)
* Ryan O'Keefe (56)
* Ben Johnson (62)
* Cameron Bruce (64)
* Ryan Hargrave (66)
* Ryan Houlihan (73)
* Troy Makepeace (81)

Ezzy had a stack of talent, just lacked desire, maturity, and a few other things.

He was a prodigy as a junior, but got shown up in the bigtime as a scared little kid who just wanted to be a regular kid rather than a footballer.

Interesting list of players, I wonder why Bruce took so long to be drafted? In 99 he was 20 and to go at 64 is surprising for a player of his quality. I also didn't realise that the Bulldogs' guys were that old, Gilbee, Giansiracusa and Hahn, thought they were from the 2001 draft.

You can see why most of the early picks went early, nearly all of them are very talented players who have either been cut down by injury or just don't have the right attitude. Koula and Dessy would be exceptions, neither particularly talented and were probably drafted on attitude and hardness.

Bruce didn't go through the usual processes to get drafted. He came from MHSOB and was playing with Melbourne's reserves as a Supp list player when drafted.

There are quite a few other quality AFL footballers who came through the Supp list/old school reserves footy. Amongst them:

Troy Makepeace, Adam Kingsley, Brett Montgomery, Anthony McDonald, Stephen Powell, Andrew Thompson, Brad Scott, Andrew Kellaway, Nathan Thompson, David Johnson, Damian Peverill, Mal Michael.

He must have been good, they gave him the ex captains no 2
