Hey Guys.

Sorry if I am intruding on your board here but was wondering if any of you have any information on how Joel is going and what you think of him as a player and person.

I used to be good mates with him and played lots of sport with him but have lost contact since after his second year with the cats.

He seems to be doing ok , alot of clangers last year though but I think he will win the brownlow one day.

I think he's a great player and an absolute ball magnet however I don't think he's the best kick in the world and I've seen him miss some sitters for goal (against west coast last year at skilled for example). Then again I've seen him kick 2 goals outside 50 in the nab cup last year. Peter Riccardi did say he was the best player he had seen outside of gary Ablett snr so that's a fair wrap.

I thought his '06 campaign was only a shade of his B&F winning performances in '05. Wasn't terrible, but he certainly neither improved or maintained the football he played in '05.

That said, I'd be expecting an output close to his B&F winning ways (doing the hard running across the ground, finishing goals etc), and continuing to be our 2nd or 3rd best onballer. Still some things I'd like to see him patch up on (using his size, work on aerial ability, general consistency, and up the hard running which declined somewhat in '06), but it wouldn't suprise me (not that I'd expect nothing less really) for Smithy to continue trucking along for the team.

the poor guy was often chucked in a back pocket or somewhere in the back half to make way for the likes of the woeful ling and kelly in the middle.

so, depending if thompson insists on playing his pet players in the middle will also depend on corey's year. i hope that corey gets to play and stay as a midfielder as he is much more damaging there.

Don't think he will ever win the Brownlow, but is the type every team needs -a ball magnet.

He's always working on his game according to an article a while ago - bugging the midfield coach for extra sessions.

put him in the middle of the ground not in the backlines and he will be of more value to the team. He is capable of winning the clearances and moves the ball forward (not sideways). I am a big wrap for him and while I would still have him as the starting ruck rover for the cats.
center: bartel
RR: corey
R: g.ablett
get some guys who can get the ball in close in the middle and have the quicker outside players on the wings and 1/2 backs that those inside players can then release to.

Spot on. He should just not be in the back half. Plays so much better in the middle. I get so damn frustrated with Thompson when I see him in defence.

Agree Joel's a gun for us. Thought he only had a six and a half out of ten year in '06 though (he had plenty of mates with even lower scores). Seemed to be angry/frustrated at times (e.g. punching the ball away deep into the crowd after a pass aimed at him went astray against the Swans. Cost us a 50m penalty and goal at a critical time).

He definitely does his best work around midfield and drifting forward. Should kick 20 to 30 goals each year. Never want to see him on the full back line...same applies to Ling and J Hunt.

Ling cops a fair old bagging on this site, but I reckon there's a place for him in the side. He's strong in packs, is a good tagger, never gives up, can kick well on his non-preferred side and can pot the odd goal from around 50. Also his clangers are works of art! Liked his courage in the dying seconds against Richmond a couple of years ago when he put his body in front of a big Richo lead and took a strong mark around half back. Siren. Narrow win.

I think ling will struggle again this year as a negating player he is now probably 2nd to rooke and he lacks the play making ability to consistently excel in another role ie. play him up forward and he may kick 2 but he wont do it consistently and he wont be a match winner. Rooke can play the negating hard in the pack rolls as well as being capable of slotting in down back and filling a role there. Ling's speed was a problem last year as teams are getting quicker and quicker and far too often when he won the ball his lack of pace put him under immediate preasure and he was forced to move the ball sideways or to hold it up.

Corey is so under-rated, but easily one of the best at the club. The problem is that you never see him in the spotlight, even interviewed after a game. Which is disappointing because he is a true talent.

I don't know if he'd win the brownlow, I think his role with the club at the moment is a little strange. In my book he should be roving all the time, not placed in the HB line.

I know you have to revolve somewhere, but he is too skilled to have coming off the HB line. Although he did take some telling marks in one game I can remember when it was all on the line. He is extremly strong overhead and would see him backing into a pack no worries, has a huge heart.

He did have some letdowns last year, but so did the rest of the team. He is easily one of our best, hope he has a better year.
