McCarthy had a year out of the system because he had a sook, isn't a key position forward - 3rd tall in a proper forward line.
Kersten still yet to set the world on fire - don't get too excited.
Hamling was good in an unbelievable defensive unit that was head together by elite midfield pressure. Will get monstered if left one on one, bookmark it.
Freo have done well, but I think their trade period looks better on paper than it will once we look back on season 2017.

Agree on all aspects. It's just the most we've ever done for a while so people are happy. We've really thrown out our old "B" players and injected new younger "B" players who have the potential to get better but may not. Worth the risk.

The draft period and how it rates players is much like the preseason for every team, everything gets completely overrated (For the most part, mitchell and dangerfield excepted)...

Some valid points.

IMO thats kind of why Freo fans are hoping he could be great recruit for Freo. Lyon's teams tend to be very good at team football and playing to structure, even though this year has been an absolute mess. With a bit of luck A.Pearce continues to come on, Johnson has another year left in him to help with transition and Collins at the very least provides a big body option (personally think he's a lot of improvement to come).

Again lots of ifs and buts but Hamling could find himself in another solid backline with plenty of support and a clear role to do. Most importantly Freo so far haven't traded out of the first round, this year or next and so can keep trying to bring in that real top level talent.

Same with Bulldogs a lot will come down to a quality midfield taking some of the pressure off the backline and our biggest ifs there are likely to be getting Fyfe + Bennell back on the park rather than needing to bring in lots of new options.

Congrats to Joel on getting a sweet contract, plus now has a premiership medal. Always thought he was a bit unlucky to be delisted so swiftly by us, we drafted a skinny project player and then axed him for being a skinny project player. Kudos to the Doggies for mature trading too.
He could be our memegola

Looks like he may have looked better than he actually was in the Bulldogs defence

I hope the Dogs keep Adams.

Hamling's OK but he reminds me of Gillam or LRT or Frawley as one of those guys that just had a good GF (good series overall) rather than being that good a player. Hopefully he works out well for the Dockers. Can't really begrudge fringe players who move for opportunity or huge (% terms) pay increases. You only get a short career playing footy.

Happy to stand by this, though he's only played 25 career games. The sooner Freo can get Hamling, Collins and Pearce all on the park together the better.

What did Freo really give up though? They basically gave up pick 35 for Hamling and then swapped pick 43 for 40.

Doggies shouldn't get too cocky just yet. If one of Roberts or Adams goes down, who is their backup tall defender?

Hamling. Oh.

Morris and Roughead are still out, and they have Collins who is young. Between Adams, Roberts, Cordy, Wood, Murphy etc. they should be able to cobble together a defence over the course of the season. Adams was the best performed key defender at the Bulldogs last year and didn't play after Rd 15.

We lost Mackenzie when he was very good and Brown when he was as good as he ever was within 5 minutes of a season starting then made the GF with a defence built around a guy who had played 13 games and a bunch of mid-sizers.

None of Morris, Cordy, Wood and Murphy are KPD, really. And surely the Doggies' best structure has Roughead in the ruck?
Last year we had Adams & Morris playing as our only tall defenders at times which means having Roberts, Cordy (both playing AFL at the moment) and Collins gives us some depth at least.

Correct re: Roughy, hasn't played back since Bevo arrived.

Wood is 185cm, not a KPD but his ability to chop out and nullify opposition talls is first rate.

We also have Lewis Young although I doubt we'd throw him to the wolves as he was only drafted last year.
