Universal Love Joel Selwood - 300 Games for Captain Courageous

We would be similar to St Kilda if it wasn't for Selwood - one of the best to ever play the game and put on the Geelong colours. Absolute legend who leaves it all on the ground - unfortunately most of our team is missing that key characteristic. If only we could clone Joels intensity and passion and inject it the others. We are in BIG trouble when he hangs up the boots - leadership like that does not come around very often.

Brownlow votes in all those games bar 1, too - bit slack in the 50th, Joel ...

Was a bit stiff - had 31 touches in that game. Gaz with 42 possessions and 2 goals got the 3, Chappy with 34 touches got the 1, and Moons with 22 touches and 3 snags got the 2 votes.

I actually think Selwood is still underrated in these sense that everyone talks about his toughness and his leadership, which tends to mean his skillfulness gets less attention than it deserves. I genuinely think Joel sees the game better than almost anyone in the AFL. His intelligence and game sense is exceptional. He has great vision so he always chooses good options. His footskills aren't on the GAJ-tier freakishly amazing level, but they're still very good.

He will remembered as one of the toughest footballers ever to play the game. And rightly so. But he's been more than that. Much more.

Can remember a game against Freo on ANZAC Day early in his career where we were getting pumped (were down by about 7 goals midway through the 2nd term) when a 19yo Selwood decided to pull the team onto his young shoulders and went into beast mode. In 15 minutes, we had gone from 7 goals down to 2 points down at the main break, and ended up winning by a point.

Just a competitive beast who puts his body on the line week in, week out. Absolute gun.
Same type thing... I remember a game at SCG v Swans.... we were down.... he just went into SuperSelwood mode and blew the MF apart clearance after clearance and WOULD.NOT.BE.DENIED.THE.BALL.

We won... on his back.

I remember a Hawthorn final that we lost and his first half was maybe the best individual performance I've ever seen.
Only reason we were in the game at all.
Carried the other 21 players all on his own.

Absolutely love the guy. His number is in my phone passcode.

I wouldn’t say he’s the best cat I’ve seen - Ablett x2 and Scarlett and possibly Enright I’d have just ahead of him.

BUT I think I could safely say that no cat before or after I started watching has been at his level for as long as he has.

Was basically elite after 20 games and has been for the next 280.

Just a superstar and as someone so eloquently put it earlier in the thread, he plays with the passion we all imagine we would have if we were lucky enough to pull on the hoops.

Even tonight in 360 when he had every right to wax lyrical about himself and his football he deflected every question into a spiel about the players alongside him and the club in general and it just made me love him even more.

Well played Joel. Love your work mate

With his 300th match coming up on Saturday, I've had a chance to reflect on what an absolute privilege it's been to see Joel pull on the hoops almost every week since 2007. In my opinion, he's clearly our best ever captain. Each week he wears his heart on his sleeve and not just plays his role, but goes the extra mile to drag the team over the line. Specifically, from 2012-2015, every week he led us out and was our superstar. It was a great shame that he didn't snag one extra vote in the 2013 Brownlow to share the win with Gaz (which both players truly deserved to win), but his three Carji's and multiple AA selections go to show what a true champion he's been for both the Cats and the AFL

My favourite Joel moments are both from the aforementioned 2012-2015 period, when he led us on the field as our star player and our captain. The goal he kicked from 50 on the boundary line against Carlton in 2014 was such a perfect kick, and just goes to show how he can rise to the occasion when the going gets tough. And in Boris' 300th game in 2015, we were down in the fourth quarter but starting to mount a charge. Joel won the centre clearance, took a bounce, ran to 50 and bounced through the goal. While we didn't win the game, it showed the resilience in Joel to never give up

Congratulations on reaching this terrific milestone Joel, and all the best for the match on Saturday

I remember sitting on the couch watching that game and just in awe of him.
That game itself says everything you need to know about JS
One of my favorite games to watch

The 2014 QF? He was insane in that game. Hard and desperate at the contest in a way no one on else on the field was. There were many performances of his that stand like that, win or lose, where he did a lot of desperate hard stuff to seemingly will the side over the line on his own back. That final has always remained prominent in my mind, however, because it really epitomized the problem we had at the time (and still do to some extent) of needing one individual to pull off a herculean effort to give us a shot. Also epitomized just how good Selwood was in that period, though, and how much drive he had to see Geelong succeed in finals.

I mean, immense performance that night - he was a warrior in the midfield, leading Geelong for disposals, highest contested possession and clearance count in the game, but he also had the biggest scoreboard impact, kicking 3 of Geelong's 10 goals that night (and assisting in 3 others). Similar to GAJ's game in the 2008 GF in some ways, though he had a poorer supporting cast.
