Toast Joel Selwood

We probably have many a toast thread to this fella, I couldn't be bothered searching.... but in the light of day after a dirty night I thought he was worthy of his own thread for this season.

Last night he was IMO our best player... comfortably... his sheer will to get to the contest and to compete makes almost everyone elses look 2nd rate.

Before the season started people here wrote him off saying we had seen his best and he was done, he missed basically all pre season which we are always told means a player will struggle during the season.

Yet he played all year, formed a fantastic partnership with Danger, was all Australian AGAIN and all Australian captain AGAIN...

He is a remarkable player and we are fortunate to have him at our club.

The other club trolls will call him duckwood and rip into him every chance they get, when really they know that they would all take him at their club in a heartbeat

And broke the Afl record for contested possessions in a final.
Yeah I saw the numbers for that this morning... and he lay 13 tackles

My boss went with me, is a Hawk fan and he was saying how good Selwood is and how he just wills himself to the ball when others won't

Absolutely agreed. He was alone for 15 mins in which time Sydney took the game away and never gave us look in. God we are easy to beat by simply crowding our fwd line; same thing for three-four years now. We bomb and the rest is history. We need a new strategist and players who lower their eyes. Mind you wasn't Syd out last year in straight sets? I suspect they learnt a bit from that humiliation. Will we is the question?

Andare gatti!!

Certainly blown away the theory that he didn't play well in finals. Had two huge finals again just like in 2014. Is now a finals specialist. Just wish others followed his lead.
That was blown away a long time ago surely

Gos he was arguably stiff to not get the Norm in 11 (jimmy was very deserving mind you)
Was 14 against the Hawks were he genuinely was keeping us in the game by himself the first half?

Had a great season this year, and under the circumstances of last year (with a lot of our midfield injured, etc.) did very well then too with most of the workload.

Absolutely the best player and captain we could hope for.

I have posted often that he is Geelongs greatest player - and the simple reason ( apart from his obvious skill and ability ) is that he doesnt go missing when the pressure is on - and last night was a prime example when the side had a dirty night - similarly in that 2014 final against Hawthorn - again outstanding in a badly beaten team

You look at Geelong when they had finals teams 60s - early 80s 90s and now 2012 onwards - Geelong have allways had blokes who melt under pressure

Similarly thats why i admired Mansfield - because he stood up in those big final ( wallopings) where as quite a few of his team mates went to water

Thank you.

I had him as the best player last night, with Danger a bees dick behind. They were the two best players on the ground inc the Swans players.

Selwood is a champion. Sometimes he can bring the team with him. No-one could last night.

You couldnt ask anymore of Joel these finals unlucky not to get new medal and show what playing for passion and the club is all about pity few others at the club didnt show the same.....

Yep.
You'd think some of his teammates would be embarrassed to look him in the eye after last night. Far and away our best, and in context maybe the best game he's played for us.
Privileged to have him as our captain.

I thought Dangerfield was clearly our best player last night. Unlike Selwood when the game was there to be won (1st quarter), it was Dangerfield who simply bullied his way through everything. Selwood eventually began to catch up as Mitchell tired but Selwood was terrible, like 20 of his other teammates in the opening term. It's sad but Selwood's career will be reminiscent of Jonathan Brown's career at Brisbane. Started off playing in grand finals galore and then never came close to it again after his 24th birthday. It's brutal because we have the list and potential but the coaches have literally pissed it down the drain and champions like Enright, Bartel, Selwood, Dangerfield will never get another chance again.

Yep, Selwood's best years have been wasted, and now the same is happening with Danger.

I'm sure looking back on his career once he's done Joel will be very very happy with the 3 Premierships from 07-11. But would be icing on the cake of an absolutely incredible career if he could captain us to a premiership. He sure deserves one. But so do lots of captains (e.g. Nick Riewoldt).

Yeah this. Reckon for the time that he's had the captaincy, he would be disappointing with not going out as a premiership captain

Not sure that qualifies as sad. Odd. Not sad.

Yep, is a champion. Watching him win contests last night as if by sheer willpower while the rest of them (bar Dangerfield) couldn't get near it was as enjoyable as it was frustrating.

It was definitely one of his best games I've seen. His best, in the context of being a second-year player, was back in 2008 against Freo.

Joel's second half in that match was absolutely phenomenal and he single-handedly willed us over the line after we trailed by something like 40 points at some stage.
