Is it just me or is it stupid that his wasting away in the VFL. If Mick Malthouse doesn't think his in the best 22, then he should have traded him at the end of 2009 when he would have looked more attractive on the trade table. If he spends half the year in the vfl i guarantee he will either go to the Gold Coast for NOTHING or request a trade. If we trade him we still get NOTHING for him because his gone off the radar.

Your thoughts!!!??? thought id put a cat amoungst the pigeons

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Quite simply, he is not fit enough at the moment. He had an interrupted preseason, and has been sent to the VFL to get some fitness back. He will be back very soon, no need to fret.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

I personally don't think this guy has much more improvement in him and would rather see Dawesy in there. At least he has more pysical presence and seems alot stronger through the legs and in proportion (body wise) this year.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Since when did playing in the VFL become such a big deal??

Why can't it be used as a staging platform for players that are a little underdone on fitness??

It's important to have super fit players on the field these days.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Anthony kicked 50 goals last year as a 21 year old KPP in his first fully year of AFL footy. Why are people so keen to write him off?

Yes, Dawes has been looking great in the twos but Anthony has the runs on the board. In my perfect side i would have both Dawes and Anthony in but if i had to choose, a fit Jack would win every time.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Surely the present strategy is designed to protect a very productive young goal-kicker? With the increasing speed of the game, and the mounting injuries this year, you can't risk fielding a player who may be underdone. He'd be too vulnerable. The coaches know exactly how valuable JA is, and he'll be back when he's right.:thumbsu:

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

One game in the VFL is hardly wasting away. His form had been scratchy in the 2 opening rounds, so he was sent to the reserves.
As others have said, he was injured through pre season, so he is behind the 8 ball. After shoulder surgery, he wasn't able to do any weight training at all. He needs to build up his strength if he wants to wrestle one on one as the ball comes in.

Fit and strong, of course he is in our best 22. One match in the 2's is hardly grounds to believe he will be poached.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Meh, the clown show is on hiatus for re-tooling.

He'll be back, bigger and better than ever once he has a better fitness base to work from. :thumbsu:

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

correct call dropping him. He was unfit and not performing. I was however suprised that we did not bring in a replacement tall. The obvious guy been Dawes...or even Reid tried back up forward.

Jack is also suffering from a foot injury at the moment so is unlikely to be fit for a few more weeks.

You're overreacting. He was sent back to the VFL because his form was poor and he needed to gain more fitness and touch. I don't think it represents how the club sees his future with us. Also when fit he is pretty clearly our best KPF. Dawes does deserve a crack but Ant will be back.

Re: John Anthony and Malthouse's/Massive/Mistake

Jack was poor in the first 2 weeks due to an obvious lack of match fitness. His workrate appeared to be way down on last year. I felt he deserved to be dropped.

He'll be back as he is certainly in our best 22 IMO! I wouldn't stress a great deal.

Beside his obvious form problems, Jack is a confidence player who expects a lot from himself. this was evident with his own outburst of relief after the Adelaide final last year.
He realised he had made scant contribution, not through lack of trying, and it
showed in his emotional state.

I still rate him highly and think getting some form and fitness in the VFL is exactly the ticket.
Playing in the seniors without success would crush him.
He is very young, very inexperienced at the top level as a KPP but did a fantastic job when he was our only target last year.

Kudos and damned good luck to him I say.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm still on Jack to be a damned good KPP in time.

He was quite simply crap and deserved to be dropped. We're aiming for a premiership this year, no passengers. That said Jacks one of my favorite players, I'm sure he'll find touch and be back soon. What I'd really love to see is Jack, Dawes and Cloke in a three tall setup. I think Cloke playing so high is hurting Anthony a fair bit, he's getting double teamed a hell of a lot when Clokes man floats back. Really need a second tall to help him out and really stretch some defenses, if Mick refuses to use Cloke in that capacity then it should be Dawes.

He didn't get dropped because he's not in our best 22, he got dropped because he wasn't doing the right things.

Forwards these days need to tackle more than anything. Stopping the ball from coming out is the key to winning games.
Jack/John wasn't doing it there for was dropped, until he plays by the team rules and does he'll be a VFL player.

Thanks for wasting 2 minutes of my life.

I expected Jack to really put more body on over the summer so he could hold his ground in one on ones more often. This hasnt happened and he actually looks lighter, my question is does the club see him as a key forward or have other roles in mind for him?
In my opinion he has all the basics to become a great forward, he is quick on the lead, A strong mark, sensational kick for goal and seems to have a touch of arrogance that all the great forwards have.
All that is missing from the puzzle is bit more upper body strength and there may be a question over his tank which you would hope improve over a few pre seasons.
I have high hopes for Jack and wish I knew what the club has planned for him.
