John Anthony

JA would be a good fit at any of Melbourne, Essendon, Carlton or Freo as he is an immediate upgrade of their key forwards.

He is leaving the club to get more opportunities, not because he is a different cat or a locker room cancer as some people seem to think.

He is a bit of a one trick pony on the face value but he does kick a lot of goals out of random situations also. Our biggest concern with him was bigger full backs would beat him one on one, and he also wasn't able to maintain pressure at our high standards. But there is nothing wrong with his work ethic. He was just a bit of a blower ala Rocca.

I think he has promise as a offensive defender too.

Unfortunately we have a full house in terms of defensive personnel and the Cloke/Dawes combo was more of a winner for us.

The story goes something like Anthony wasn't invited to Licuria's wedding (which hardly seems surprising as they would have spent about one year on the list together). So, the ceremony is about to start and Anthony walks in to the church in his Collingwood training gear, runs up to the alter and shakes a stunned Licuria's hand, then runs off.
Yes that story about John Anthony appears in this article from September of 2009...

"In February last year (2008) he was labelled "The Wedding Crasher" for his bizarre actions in one of the AFL's great untold stories. The story goes that Anthony, not invited to former Collingwood midfielder Paul Licuria's wedding and not especially close to him, was still keen to make his mark.

As Licuria was waiting in Richmond's St Ignatius chapel for fiancee Barbara, Anthony dashed up the aisle in his civvies to wish him luck. Jaws dropped among the 200 assembled guests. His teammates and Licuria weren't sure whether to just shake their heads and laugh, or be angry at the impetuousness of it."
Hawthorn 08 were better than Collingwood last year. They won the Grand Final easily at first time of asking for one thing. That is a pretty definitive way to judge it.
Oh they were not. They didn't finish on top that year. They didn't win as many matches as Collingwood. Their percentage wasn't as good. Geelong had 20 more inside-50's and nine more scoring shots in the 2008 Grand Final, and Hawthorn had to deliberately rush 16 behinds to win that day. Geelong were a significantly better team than Hawthorn in 2008, but couldn't seal the deal. There was no better team than Collingwood in 2010 though.

I think I speak for 90% of Melbourne supporters when I say I don't want him and he isn't really what we need.

He's undersized and only a stop gap option at FF. We have Jurrah, Petterd, Green, Bate, Dunn and Watts (for the time being) as undersized players playing KPF. He'll add little to our side. We need to develop a big marking key position forward and hopefully we take one in the draft.

As a defender we don't need him either.

That's the problem with Jack and why his career went downhill at Collingwood. He is an in-between player.

Not big enough to be a key forward, not small enough to be a small forward. He also doesn't have enough smarts to be a defender.

I think his best fit is Carlton. With good service, he can become the 50+ goal a year player again. Murphy, Judd and Gibbs should provide him some good delivery, and he is obviously a beautiful finisher. Waite and Henderson would be the key marking targets, with Jack playing more a mid-sized role and able to float down back as well. The Blues don't have any mid-sized lead-up forwards.

However, it seems to me Carlton played its best footy with more smalls up fowrard, so this may disrupt their structures.

Bloke is a head case, good luck whoever takes him.

As a footballer he is one dimensional and has been worked out. Opposition sides just run off him as he has cannot turn off a straight line and has a poor tank. With football becoming more congested his ability to find space is limited and once the ball hits the ground he is a liability.

He was offered for trade and there was little interest, make of that what you will.

That the asking price was ridiculous?

Eddie McGuire speaking on 6PR this morning -

"The mail is that he is headed over your way, going to Fremantle."

Appears not. Normally if a player wants to move and he is held back by the asking price it hits the papers and the tug of war begins eg Ball. Sounds like he either planned to move via the PSD all along or there was little interest.

I suspect little interest, McKinley from WC was traded for pick 70? Probably provides some insight into his value.

Has there ever been a key forward prior to JA playing with the dual disabilities of lack of height and severely crossed eyes?

I can't believe he can take a mark and kick a goal given that he sees 6 footballs and 24 posts.

Still not sure we want/need him as we just got rid of Murphy. Surely the Gold Coast would look at him?

The PSD seems a difficult path to take if he did intend to get to Freo.

PieBeast you seem pretty definate, why so?

Well outside of Pavlich your very light on in terms of key forward options? I thought that would be the obvious reason Freo would be looking at drafting him

18.7.115 = 25 scoring shots
11.23.89 = 34 scoring shots - 16 rushed behinds = 18 scoring shots

You can't have it both ways.

The Australian is reporting that Ryan Cook is telling WAFL Clubs he will live with Anthony if Cook signs with one of them.

Thats a pretty strong indicator that he is heading west.

I agree we need key fwd options but at 192cm and his style of play not sure he fits the bill. Mayne is a mobile, too short, key position player. We have Houghton, Siba and Shep but the problem is none of these guys have shown enough. So does getting a 'nearly' tall fwd help? Do we go back to the draft and have a go at a couple of key position players?

I though Sibasado was converted into a backman these days?

He may at best be a short term option, but at the very worst he's shown when you get him the ball he can kick a few goals. If I was in Freo's position I would get Anthony and draft a few talls as well, so at worst that way Anthony will cover the period until they develop.

I can't see any reason that a potential top 4 side would want Anthony.

He struggles to get a kick against quality opponents and just would not merit a game in a serious finals campaign.

He was found out by Lake, Scarlett and Rutten in 09 and his career has gone backwards ever since.
