Fat guy dies young. Knock me down with a feather.

I don’t remember anyone being particularly surprised by it.

About as surprising as when Ricky May died at around the same age.

Fat man named Candy, that's like a pianist named Keys.

His cliche/character in Cool Runnings is entirely fictional, which shouldn't be surprising, but I do remember feeling disappointed when I first read that. He would've made a good Bob Woolmer though, an actual coach of a shambolic national sporting team. But I'm pretty sure the only real-life person he ever portrayed on film was that of Dean Andrews Jr in JFK--an appropriately greasy performance overshadowed by Joe Pesci.

Which reminds me, I wish Candy's best line from Home Alone ("polka, polka, pohhlka, pohhlka") was re-purposed in order to restore his scrapped role in Disney's 1995 animated feature Pocahontas.

GTFOOH

Trading Places is only thing close to touching Planes, Trains and Automobiles of this era.

Someone is finally talking some sense. P, T and A is Candy's crowning glory.

Also, anyone who compares Chris Farley to him should be fired in to the sun.

They are most certainly in the conversation.

I was a teens to early 20s through the 80s and used to watch plenty of comedy. I can't remember the last time I went out of my way to watch one, it's probably the one genre these days that interests me the least. If I want a good laugh, I'll go back to the 80s and watch something from that period.

Most of my favourite comedy films of the 80s involved Chevy Chase like Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation, Fletch, Spies Like Us and Three Amigos.

He dominated 80s comedy films, no one could play the bumbling idiot role better than him.

My dad really liked Uncle Buck and a lot of people do but except when I was really little it hasn't done for me. American PG comedy movie... probably sums it all up.
