So would be fair to say any arguments about Coleman not kicking 150 goals are void as season was considerably shorter.

shorter than Bob Pratt? I think not.

If Andrew Walker retired after his fist game, would you have called him one of Carlton's greats?

He would have had a career average of 30 posessions, a career average of 2 goals and never played in a losing team.

Do you see my point?

As for the jumper comment, I actually find it hilarious that Essendon supporters are sticking up for a guy who played 1000 years ago simply because he was an Essendon player.

Now that's ridiculous.
Of course Essendon supporters will defend Coleman. Just like Collingwood supporters with Coventry, Hawthorn with Hudson etc etc. It's called loyalty. And your example of Walker is ridiculous and you know it.

Of course it is ridiculous - but it was used to make a point. A point which I think is valid.

I think it is fair to say that Coleman is probably one of the top 10 players of all time, and probably in the top 2 for talent (Ablett being the other). The fact that he only played 98 games does not detract from the fact that he was a star player. He didn't just lead and mark like other FFs mentioned in this thread, he took the big screamers and busted packs open, he was a very athletic fooballer, and this is what made him so great.

I'd agree with that.

Hudson was a superior full forward as he kicked more goals per game.

End of story.

Wisbey is a superior judge of young talent as his player profiles are longer.

End of story

I went to see the Hawks play a game in the 1980s and sat next to guy who was full back for the Hawks in Coleman's first match. Coleman kicked 12, and this guy Lionel (somebody) told me at one time there was a marking contest. He felt a nudge, and as he looked up all he could see was the soles of Coleman's boots as he took a screamer.

Coleman was obviously a star. 537 goals in 98 games is high quality stuff. Coleman's average per game is 5.48, and the only player with a better average is Peter Hudson who booted 727 goals in 129 games, average 5.64 per game, although Hudson also kicked another 1400 to 1500 goals in other leagues despite a crippling knee injury in 1972.

For mine, Hudson was the greatest of all time, but then I never saw Coleman play.

out of Coleman, Hudson & Lockett i know which one i would luv to watch as a supporter of that team...............Coleman by a mile.

Overrated.

How can someone be judged on 98 games of football?

Obviously had talent to burn, but to be declared the greatest ever is ridiculous.

What was Allen Jakovich's record like in his first 50 games?

If Chris Judd retires tommorrow. All of us will say that he was one of the greatest West Coast player to play the game, yet when all of us are deep in the ground most people will say (according to you) that he was over-rated because he only played 70-odd games????? This is exactly what your doing with Coleman.

If you were to say that Chris Judd was the greatest player ever if he retired tomorrow - you'd be wrong and a moron.

Probably one of the most talented, but until you prove it over an extended period you cannot possibly lay claim to be being an all time great.

The one thing that hasn't been mentioned is when Coleman got injured he was reaching the peak of his powers and his best years so if he kept going he would have been in his prime, but how good no one will ever know unfortunately.

Mate, by your logic... if Modra retired at the end of the last season he kicked 80+ goals his average would give him claim to be called the greatest ever.

I don't think RF is taking away from the fact that JC was a great player, but you can't put him ahead of a Lockett and an Ablett coz they have done more...

We don't know if Coleman would lose his way, trade clubs or whatever

You can't reward potential over the product
