I hate to say it, but, after meeting John Elliot and listening to him speak at the sports luncheon yesterday I have renewed faith in the roos lasting another hundred years. I also have a bit more respect (?) for him as well.

He made a number of good points as regards match receipts (ie it should be the way it was with receipts shared by both teams not just the home team) and memberships. Encouraging clubs to promote away games and providing for admission to all of a clubs melbourne based games.

He also had some very interesting things to say that were off the record. Unfortunately I can't repeat them here as USC will claim me to be an insider at the club

We can all rest assured that John Elliot and a number of other Melbourne based presidents want to see the 10 melbourne teams in the competition.

Good to here Kmart Kid I too think that we should go back to gate sharing.
You only have to have a bad draw (as we did in 2000) and you can make very little from gate receipts.
From your information is the gate receipt sharing arrangement likely to be put forward to commence in 2002? The news report I saw indicated this was the case.

The other thing that should also be pointed out is that the AFL is planning to take out a larger slice of the match receipts from the blockbuster games between Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, and Richmond to (at least partially) compensate for clubs like ours (and the Bulldogs, St.Kilda etc.), where we don't get the guaranteed return games against the larger Victorian clubs (and hence, miss out on the revenue opportunities).

I'm starting to soften my stance on the AFL. Most people know how much I distrust the AFL (especially after reading the Dyson Hore-Lacy book on the last years of Fitzroy), but if the AFL keep on making measures like this, then our financial future may be brighter. Wayne Jackson, for all his work in making the game more corporate-friendly, is no Ross Oakley. Oakley actively sought the death of Victorian clubs.

However, no matter how much the AFL help us, it is still up to the club and ourselves to generate our own revenue to keep the club going. We cannot rely on the "charity" of the AFL and the wealthier clubs.....just reading the comments of the Essendon CEO on whether they would help bail out a Victorian club, I couldn't help noticing all his conditions and get out clauses......and so, I'd never fully trust the bastards......but at the least, it seems that we may not be forced out of existence like Fitzroy were.

Shinners, there is a very good saying that says...

"If it has to be, then it has to be me"

In other words, we control our own destiny. If North is to survive, then it has to be us that make it survive.

I'll accept help from the AFL, but sure as hell I don't trust them. At the MOMENT, it suits them to have all of us around because of the TV deal, but in a couple of years the knives will be out, and so will some Melbourne teams!

So while we have have an amnesty we need to secure our future, so that when the AFL does draw their knife, we won't be their first choice.

As much as it hurts me to say it, I hope it is another club that is going through a rough patch when they decide to circumsize themselves. it would be fair to say that North, the Doggies, Melbourne and possibly one other are the weekest clubs financially.
While we currently have the spotlight alone, we might be lucky when the time comes.

I'm an optimist, my son will play footy with yours one day!

Cheers!! :)

kmart kid,

Whilst I was not privvy to all that John Elliott said, North must NEVER forget that Carrrlllton wanted to buy North and indeed, bought shares in our club.

The only reason the buy out didn't go ahead was because Collingwood stepped in - not wishing to see a traditional rival become more powerful.

After 1996, I don't trust ANY of the Big 4. If there is something in it for Carlton, Richmond, Essendon and Collingwood then those clubs are all ears. Those 4 clubs are only for the betterment of their clubs - not clubs in general.
