The blood letting begins. Amazing that Faulkner, who even I as a Liberal supporter can acknowledge was successful in scrutinising the government, has resigned, whilst the dud of duds, Jenny Macklin, looks set to stay on. No wonder the ALP lost. Again.

Hopefully Faulkner can find some time to update his 1986 vintage glasses.

I agree totally. I think Macklin is a real Labor liability (and that fishwife shrill....... ) and I would have thought she would be moved aside to give someone else a go.

I'll be interested to see if Julia Gillard gets a go at treasury, although I will miss her lov/hate antics with Tony Abbott, they are hysterical.

Hmm... I don't mind Macklin as a minister, although I think that the role of 'deputy leader' should be someone who is a likely option to take the top job permanently if for whatever reason Latham needed to be replaced.

That would narrow the field to Rudd or Gillard, since I don't think Beazley would be willing to be Latham's deputy.

So Faulkner takes one for the team and acts as the fall guy. Its just a ploy to deflect criticism from Dud Latham.

Nah Faulkner has been there for a long time, so they need some new blood. I liked Faulkner.

Faulkner going is going to be a big loss.

As to the next bloke to take his role...either Robert Ray or Kim Carr..and either of those will make the Senate a lot more interesting..2 rather large headkickers there.

They wouldn't have Kim Carr...would they?

I always assumed he was in the Senate for the reason most Senators are: He is so offensive to ordinary voters that he is up there so he doesn't do any damage, even in a safe seat. Giving him a public role would be absolutely mind boggling, although because of Faulkner's resignation another leadership position would probably have to go to the left...

Robert Ray = The fat Indian (P. Keating)

Greatest all time Senate leader = Reg Withers!

Sadly Labor in the Senate don't really have that many names that would instantly grab ya Tim.

Stephen Conroy?
Kate Lundy?
Jacinta Collins?

With Cook having retired, there is a shortage of experience in Labor's Senate team.

Funny how even all the lib supporters think that Faulkner was ok, reminds me a bit of the way everyone like John Button. I reckon Conroy has a clue also as does Smith. Clearly Crean and Macklin should be sacked from the front bench. Rudd should stay but learn to keep his mouth shut and stop sounding like the sort of smart arse prick that hap the crap continually beaten out of him at school.
If Latham had the balls to demand he selected the cabinet himself then it would help greatly.

I'll have a go.

A lot would depend if a guy like Larry Anthony is still going to hold Richmond as an example.

Howard, Costello, Downer all guarnateed of retaining their spots and jobs.

J. McGauran - Agriculture
Kelly - Arts, Sport and Tourism
Tuckey - Aged Care

That's about all I can give at the moment Tinker!

This change seems rather unnecessary; Latham should've persuaded Faulkner to stay on. Robert Ray seems the logical replacement to me.

It is surprising that Macklin would remain as deputy leader after being kept hidden throughout the campaign.

As for the Libs... is Hill going to stay as senate leader?

J. McGauran is a waste of space, Kelly was incompetent as a Minister (will stay Parl. Sec to PM) and Tuckey is finished.

It's pretty tough to find a vacancy in the ministry, as it's a pretty good team.

Under threat:

Ian Macdonald
Larry Anthony*
Eric Abetz
Danna Vale
Jim Lloyd

Should be but aren't:

Kay Patterson
Chris Ellison
Fran Bailey

Remember, there are unfortunately things such as Senate representation and balancing the states involved.

Turnbull should go into cabinet, Andrew Robb into the outer ministry.

Hill will definitely stay as Senate leader Dave.

John Faulkner will be missed - he was a good senate leader.

Jenny Macklin should stay on the front bench, but I have to agree - she's not deputy leader material. I tend to like the idea of Kevin Rudd, especially given his portfolio.

Simon Crean has apparently indicated that he won't be shadow treasurer. Probably a good move, but like Macklin he deserves a front bench spot.

With the ministry - all I want is Ruddock out of there! He's a bloody idiot! I much preferred Daryl Williams as Attorney General (he's gone of course) because at least he had an idea of what was going on in law as a QC! Oh - and that discriminator Mal Brough!

Ray has been reducing his workload/profile. Conroy doesn't overly impress me. I thought Collins was losing her seat to FF, and my Canberra ALP friends tell me that Lundy is actually as thick as she appears on TV.

Charlie if your discussion regarding our front bench was rational and mature then I would be very keen to hear your opinion. :)
Ah - so it's like the good ol' days when we were discussing education! As I recall, I'll be 'rational and mature' when I start to agree with you.

What, then, is the point of the discussion?
