Apparently, he has a lung condition that could cause internal bleeding when undertaking physical exertion - eg bowling.
Bad luck for the Duke - he'd become a T20 specialist, and probably had a few years left on the T20 circuit where he could have picked up some handy cash. Probably not IPL-level, but would get a game in every other league.
In his day, he was a damn good ODI player. I remember posting after one terrible game 'Can we just have Hastings open the bowling from both ends'? A lot of times, he WAS our best ODI bowler. He did get sent on a lot of the tough tours, where some other bowlers were 'rested' or pulled out due to a hangnail or something.
