Seems to only care about AFL when it involves drugs ...

I bet you if it was his beloved St George Dragons, he wouldn't be going on like a righteous ponce.

I thought the NRL has a two strike policy?

And while we are at it, Channel 7 had one of their presenters die with a "cocktail of drugs" in his system and no pressure has been put on them to do drug testing. Double standards?

When a big incident occurs like this, of course he is going to comment.

At some stage a journo is going to throw in the "What do you think of Cousins?" question. From what I've read he handled it well and everything he said is spot on.

Er, 1 strike and your out in the NRL.

Try again.

This is what David Gallop said recently ( after the Andrew Johns thing)

"If you test positive other than on game day you’re going to face a suspended penalty and a fine and the second offence termination of your contract and mandatory suspension."

I once saw an interview with an ex U.S politican who said that illicit drugs are one of the greatest things for politicians . They can blame so many things on the dealers and drugs themselves rather than looking at and dealing with why it happens in the first place which is intrinsically linked to social/political factors.

John Howard knows that commeting on this is good political mileage. He gets to appease the religious right and people with little knowledge of drugs , with few votes lost. The last thing he ever wants to do is look behind the issue and expose faults in our ' perfect' system.

and you're shocked by this?

I think the Gov should butt out on the drugs matter, the AFL doesn't need the funding.
The AFL is one of 2 sports that do test for these drugs, the rest let their players get away with it and I'm more than happy with what the AFL does.

I would have thought Howard has more to worry than what the AFL does.

John Coward should shut the freakin hell up.....stat looking for a life post Nov 24th.

I just stubbed my toe on the driveway.

John Howard must pay.... blah blah blah... little rodent blah blah blah....

The Australian public would not be aware of even 5% of the negative legacy this man will leave. Just wait until employees the Murdoch media , the public service and the rest get around to telling the real stories.

He's holding an Aussie Rules footy in one of his new ads. So funny. Probably doesn't know what to do with it.

He does have more to worry about, thats why he is weighing in on the AFL

Politics in this country have been so diluted of any intellectual content that the only way you ever get noticed is to sprout a few 30 second quotes and simplistic statements & solutions.

Statements such as Zero Tolerance, Tough on Drugs, Tough on Crime, Tough on Dole Bludgers, Tough on Queue Jumpers, and quotes such as "We will be the ones who will decide who enters this country and the circumstances of which they arrive". are typical examples of how politics goes in the Western World, and John Howard is the reigning champion of these acts of lies and deception.

Drugs (like Terrorism, Illegal Immigration & Crime) make good political copy, and that's why they are a convervative's wet dream, because you can blame them for all sorts of things (much in the same way the Liberal Party demonized boat people in 2001, and blaming them for all the sins of the world).

And sensing the calls from Tabloid Media & Talk Back Radio, they know that commenting on Ben Cousins and telling the AFL to get tough on drugs, without any explanation as to how they go about this, gets votes, and if the AFL refuses to bow down to their demands and won't change their laws before the election, they can say that they are soft on drugs, further solidifying their core support.

John Howard has a rat like cunning, and because of his track record, you know that he's prepared to delve into the depths of the moral sewer to get elected, and maybe Drugs in 2007 could be the Tampa of 2001.

Keep believing the Murdochs and co . Good luck on election day ;)

Not even a John Howard fan.

Just find it hilarious how he has become the national scapegoat for any problem that crops up in anyone's life.

Except no one was doing this, they were only commenting on his comments. I think we all know that Johnny's repertoire consists of little more than scaremongering and tax bribes. Sadly enough it works.

Howard is NOT an AFL fan and never has been

He is a thugby St George fanatic and along with the sleasy Queenslander Brandis are both using Australias most popular sport to make cheap political points..Whenever the Rodent PM speaks at the North GF breakfast he always refers to thugby - I suppose he just cant help himself.
