Not even a John Howard fan.

Just find it hilarious how he has become the national scapegoat for any problem that crops up in anyone's life.

Fair enough, ofcourse he will get stick for things out of his control.

My point was that he doesn't get stick for alot of things that he is responsible for.

I should have said good luck on 'National Draft Day'

When a big incident occurs like this, of course he is going to comment.

At some stage a journo is going to throw in the "What do you think of Cousins?" question. From what I've read he handled it well and everything he said is spot on.

Exactly! people seem to forget that a journo asked him the question. He didn't just make it is business and comment out of thin air. jeez there's some stupid **** on here sometimes.

And he could have kept his trap shut but no he has to sink the boot in!

Being a Lawyer Howard should have known better than comment on a case before the court!

Pretty sure "Krudd" knows more about scaremongering than Johnny, basically his whole campain revolves around making us believe the country is being run into the ground, personally think we are doing alright, his IR reforms hold little water and exist just to appease the little guy. Basically he cares too much about being trendy.
Personally I don't think alot will change if he does get in, the troops will stay in Iraq, and I don't see any major tax increases, considering his wife is pretty much the biggest capitalist in Australia.
As for all the money promised for schools and hospitals...
Well tell me we haven't heard it all before.

Yes he was asked for his thoughts and obviously has to say something but I didn't like this quote by Howard:

"But I hope that the AFL is as tough as needs be in relation to the culture and attitudes within the sport.''

Obviously the AFL does need to have a closer look at drugs in footy but I don't think the word 'culture' was necessary. AFL player lifestyles are no different to the other codes like NRL and I think Howard may have tried to confuse the AFL drug policy with player lifestyle by using 'culture'. It just sounded derogatory of the code to me.

I understand what you are saying, but he has to take that line, otherwise Krudd would call him soft on drugs!

I think he is trying to subtly differentiate AFL from NRL though and paint AFL as having a bad culture when in fact it is the policy. This is just the way I see it any way.

Politics in this country have been so diluted of any intellectual content that the only way you ever get noticed is to sprout a few 30 second quotes and simplistic statements & solutions.

Statements such as Zero Tolerance, Tough on Drugs, Tough on Crime, Tough on Dole Bludgers, Tough on Queue Jumpers, and quotes such as "We will be the ones who will decide who enters this country and the circumstances of which they arrive". are typical examples of how politics goes in the Western World, and John Howard is the reigning champion of these acts of lies and deception.

Drugs (like Terrorism, Illegal Immigration & Crime) make good political copy, and that's why they are a convervative's wet dream, because you can blame them for all sorts of things (much in the same way the Liberal Party demonized boat people in 2001, and blaming them for all the sins of the world).

And sensing the calls from Tabloid Media & Talk Back Radio, they know that commenting on Ben Cousins and telling the AFL to get tough on drugs, without any explanation as to how they go about this, gets votes, and if the AFL refuses to bow down to their demands and won't change their laws before the election, they can say that they are soft on drugs, further solidifying their core support.

John Howard has a rat like cunning, and because of his track record, you know that he's prepared to delve into the depths of the moral sewer to get elected, and maybe Drugs in 2007 could be the Tampa of 2001.

Mark Latham board.

'culture' sits next to 'dynasty' as the most over-exercised and misapplied term in sport. It has simply become the lazy man's way of saying "to tar everyone with the same brush".

does anyone disagree that there is a culture of drugs/partying within the AFL that needs to be addressed?
Does it matter what we think? The PM can't just come out and pick and chose how he wants to tarnish one code and leave the others alone.

Are you honestly saying that the NRL is clean? Joey Johns took drugs for how long?

JH regarding AJ: "These are highly-paid, high-profile role models, and there's a responsibility on the part of all of the administering authorities in the major Australian sports, and I obviously include the four football codes, and I include cricket, I include all of them, to make sure that their anti-drug regimes are as tough as possible".

You see when it is a rugby league player Howard puts everyone under the veil but if it is AFL then it is the culture of the sport.

He picks and choses which is not right.

Please get your facts right.
It's 2 strikes in the NRL. And the clubs do the testing which, as we've seen with Newcastle's Andrew Johns, means the integrity of the NRL drug testing regime is seriously compromised.

Sure?

1st strike - sanctions, 2nd strike - gone.

Andrew Johns, like Cousins, admitted to taking drugs over the off-season.

too slack to read all the posts, so this has probably been posted. But i think the NRL has a 1 strike policy. However, Mitchell sargent (spelling) from the cowboys, was found positive BY the cowboys. Which for some stupid reason, as he was found positive by the cowboys and not the NRL, he was able to be picked up by the Knights.

well at least thats how I thought it went down, there could have been something I have missed.

I'm not much of a fan of Rudd's either, but he is in a lot of people's eyes the lesser of two evils, and although what he's offering isn't great, it's a damn sight better than another 2 years (that's if he hands over the reigns to Costello or not) of this skidmark on the underpants of Australia (Howard) leading us into further moral decay.

BTW, EOP26, the mere fact that you would compare me with Mark Latham is an insult.
