Umm 3 in the morning on a friday night just got in from being out and about, technically it is no longer the day he was shot but i thought i would see what some of your thoughts were on the man who twenty years ago today was tragically gunned down well before his time.

I personally just wanted to say he was a brilliant man, his music was the best we will ever hear. He was a great human being and he is missed every day.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.
I still remember the day he was shot, it was one of the most saddest days of my life.
My parents are huge Beatles fans, and so I grew up listening to their music. I remember coming home on that tragic day, to see both my parents crying. When they told me what had happened, I was in shock, I just couldn't believe it. I cried for a week.
JOHN LENNON 1940-1980 R.I.P
He's a rock legend, and he and his music will never be forgotten.

I posted a topic on Nick's Collingwood Page on 8 December under the heading, "Just Gimme Some Truth". I'm sure Mike won't mind if I steal my own post and share it with you here:

I don't have many heroes any more ... I don't really believe in them. But I had a hero once. Unfortunately, he got gunned down in cold blood by some f*cking lunatic outside his home in New York 20 years ago. I'm feeling kinda sad about that right now.
So, here's a short burst from one of his greatest songs.

"I'm sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I've had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of tricky dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope"

R.I.P. John Lennon.

Beua and Alf thanks for your contributions although im a little shocked this tread has not seen more attention.

He wasnt just a Beatle or a musician... he was a great human being who lobbied for peace and harmony across the globe. A truly great man and i want to hear your comments on the man and maybe his music. Anything.

Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans.

I'll take the middle ground on this one.

John Lennon - very talented musician but less than spectacular human being.

Strip away the admittedly very good music and you are left with a garden-variety hippy with extremely poor taste in women.

Jod dont take it to heart. I liked Lennon but think the real genius in the Beatles was McCartney. Saying that gets me in more strife than enough, so lets just say what happened to Lennon was a tradgedy, but the same could be said of anyone who was bruttaly
murderd like that.

Sorry to disappoint jod23

But I have never had a really high opinion of John Lennon. I admire some the things he used to say and what he used to believe in, but as is usual for any of those hippies, he was a total idealist who had no understanding of how one would actually be able to achieve a world full of peace and love, also he appeared to have not ptractised what he preached, if his very shabby treatment of his first wife, eldest son and former members of the Beatles are anything to go by.

And I'm sorry, maybe I'm just a couple of years too young or something but his music is absolutely terrible. Self-indulgent, carping and preaching, his songs are self-centered tirades that lack any kind of musical appeal whatsoever. It took the breakup of the Beatles to properly sort out where the talent really lay with that group and anyone can see both Paul and George were better musicians than John would ever be.

Thats not to say that Paul is better than John - not so, but the two people were very different and it was this natural tension between the two that is the secret to the Beatles enduring appeal. Once the band broke up (yeah, thanks Yoko)and Paul and John went their sepearte ways, then the music that each produced was nowhere near as good as that which they wrote while still in the Beatles.

Personally I just cannot relate to the 60's at all and heros of the 60s such as John Lennon leave me cold with all their selfish idiotic posturing.

What makes John Lennon's death a greater tragedy than any other??

What about Hendrix, Charlie Parker (jazz sax player), Joplin, Cobain, Elvis, Billie Holliday, Keith Moon, Jeff Buckley, Jeff Porcaro (Toto's drummer)??
Princess Diana??

What about an innocent person in a car hit by a drunk driver?

What makes John Lennon special?? Just because he wrote some amazing music doesn't make him a god!! We've all done some bad things, Lennon wasn't above it.

Imagine is such an idealistic, dreamy piece of music. Based on a fantasy. Maybe that's why it was so popular.

The reason why Lennon's death is a tragedy is because it wasnt an accident and he didnt kill himself like that weak lily-livered Cobain, or the over rated Hendrix, but someon actually planned and murdered him for no reason.

There will never be another band like the Beatles. What they did or did not do or what that did or did not believe in is irrelevant to any critique of their music. They are the only band in the world that did not keep repeating the same music with a variation to cash in on the success of a particular song. Their music progressed from album to album, each new album being an advancement on what came before. They changed their music, it evolved. They remained fresh and innovative. Two words that cannot be used to describe any music since 1986.

Although the Beatles may always be classed as legends, they were not musically brilliant. They were never in the same class of guitar greats such as Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore. George Harrison had Eric Clapton play guitar for him on the song "While my guitar gently weeps".(must have been before Clapton stole Harrison's wife though)
Brilliant composers, maybe, but brilliant musicians, no.

I must confess to having been totally smitten by the Beatles as a 10 year old. Why ? Because of the music. At the time, together with the Beach Boys, they were where is was at NO QUESTION. And they were much more groovy, being British. The great thing about the band was that their personalities were not contrived. Prior to them, all musicians had managers that spoke for them and made them change their accents. This plainly did not happen to the Beatles and from then on, that's what all the others did. Sure, they did the Elvis thing for awhile but, again, developed their own path and, together with Ali, showed that 'young people' had valid things to say. This may seem awfully twee and shallow now ( as the spin doctors get to work ) , but at the time it was critical. And Lennon was the spokesman for the group . You can't imagine what sort of effect a new Beales album ( they even made albums important cf singles ) had on us. Remember - no videos, TV shows etc. Just the odd picture and reference, and THE ALBUM worn out ( the cover examined in minute detail for hints of groovyness). The Beatles brought together and built on Dylan and black R&B, added their quirky English stuff and were open to ANY interesting sounds. Having them as your music guide as a teenager prepared you for all the other stuff, and kept your mind open to it all.
I was in the States when Lennon got killed and it was a very strange reaction there. You can slag off the music now but never dismiss the influence of Lennon and his band on all aspects of contemporary music.

I think John Lennon as a person was a very brilliant man, did a lot for the human race and his death certainly was a tragedy. Personally I don't care much for the Beatles, their music is OK but not the greatest ever. That honour goes to a man by the name of Brian Douglas Wilson. SMiLE!!!!!!!!

hehehe bet no one got that

Grendel - they were both geniuses (sp?) notice that after they broke up although they both produced great music neiter really blossomed, but together they were beyond brilliant.

BSA - He was an idealist and that was a good quality, he did what he could for world peace but i hate to dissapoint you, one man cant do it alone. Concerning Cynthia and Julian well nobody is perfect and you try playing happy families when every eye every second of every day is fixed on you. Your obviously a little misguided with Johns music. Your comments about his music been terrible is just silly and i honestly have no answer to that because its obvious to a deaf man that his music was brilliant. George and Paul were better musicians i dont argue that but neither were better composers or songwriters. (maybe Paul) And you comment "yeah thanks Yoko" i hope was a joke cos it wasnt Yokos fault and if you didnt know that then you dont know much about the Beatles at all.

Johnson - half the ppl you mentioned killed themselves with drugs you idiot. Lennon was gunned down by a crazed loony. Thats why its more of a tradegy?!?! Jesus where have you been.

Bee - LOL. For starters the ppl you mentioned were all lead guitarists, John played Rhythm and Paul played Bass. And if you want to talk lead guitarists the best four in the world ever in no particular order are Harrison Hendrix Clapton and Knoffler, none of the second rate lead guitarists you mentioned would even rate against the ones listed above. And he asked Clapton to play guitar for "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" cos they were very good friends at the time. George Harrison wrote the music and the words so you think he couldnt have played if he didnt want to?

Lioness - good call on the Beach Boys the only band to rival the Beatles in the 60's, love there music.

Ok well thats it i hope i educated you all

Knoffler? You cannot be serious. As for calling Page, Vaughan and Blackmore second rate, please do yourself a favour, get a CD by any of them and listen!
Knoffler! I am still laughing.
Obviously you are a Lennon fan, and I can respect that, but personally I find him boring.

I take it you haven't heard 'Gish' or 'Siamese Dream' then?

And how could you forget the likes of Syd Barrett or Dave Gilmour?

Hendrix was good, but not that great. You can put a lot of his breakthroughs down to the general breakthroughs made in guitars at that particular time (ie: high gain amps/pickups, light gauge strings, improved effect units, etc.).
