Also how much say does Horse get in list management anyway?

Depends on the coach, but I would say little.

He would be informed of their shortlist of draftees at the bare minimum.

Just musing.

I think back to the (Nick Smith sub) game v Hawthorn in Launceston. They cut us up with ball use in the first half and then we effectively went one on one, put the ball user/receiver under pressure, denied them space and time and even though undermanned we had a terrific comeback win.
Clear example of how to beat Hawthorn, yet how often did we revert to those tactics again (v Hawthorn)?

Last week we struggled against the 3 WCE tall forwards, so expected us to add Laidler or Melican to take on the 3 (more talented) tall GWS forwards, instead we swap one tall for another and have easily predictable situations where Marsh or Smith are matched up on one of the GWS talls.

So the point?
Does Longmire adapt to different games/teams or does he instead focus on his/our key measurables ("we didn't bring our contested game") and does he possess sufficient tactical nous/adaptability to take us forward? Skills, structures, have they improved/deteriorated? Does he make best use of players?

Very difficult to argue with his record, but I've always felt he was a coach who had a certain view on how his team should play and when we were beaten in those KPIs or when teams took us out of our comfort zone he struggled to react quickly or sufficiently enough.

I guess one recent example was the Collingwood game. Much criticism of their ball retention/use going into the game, so surely the obvious thing is to pressure them up, instead we played off them almost expecting them to just kick the ball to us, so that we could hit them on the break.
So we allowed them to gain confidence (and a handy lead) and even worse it took us until the quarter-time break to remedy the error.

Longmire has a contract until the end of 2020 so he isn't going anywhere in the short term and to his credit he has introduced youth into the team (although how much of that is choice or merely circumstance might be open to debate), and yes players are out of form, but my sense is that he is perhaps for the first time, unsure of his philosophy and what is best for the team and that is reflected in his and the team's performances this year.

For the draft not much, for trade/free agency a little more, gives his opinion on players at the very least.

For the draft he'll tell Beatson what he's looking for, and Beatson will try and find the right player. Though there is a degree of flexibility to it. For example Horse wanted talls in the 2010 draft but at pick 42 Beatson said this kid named parker is too good a player to not pick, and Horse backed him in.

The guys a plonker, he's only gotten us to 3 grand finals in 6 years. Clearly knows nothing about AFL. Not to mention the massive list turnover's he's made recently while still being competitive. Good thing he's the one drafting all the kids and not just working with what is given to him. Absolute nutter this guy is.

He's done enough to stay on till the end of next year...but it's very clear that we actually need an assistant from another club with a very different game-style.
Dew has been midfield and tactics for too long an clearly isn't coming up with anything new, our stoppage work has been abysmal for years (even though last year the talent was masking the clear deficiency there). Get rid of him and replace him with someone new, or move Kirk there and bring in a new coach. Horse shouldn't be in the firing line just yet but new ideas are desperately needed in the coaching box (and have been for much longer than it may appear).

Yeah he can **** off have had enough of his inability to be able to change his game style to take advantage of the talent he has had at his disposal and a complete waste of the $10,000,000 that is Buddy the best forward to play the game in this era. Also his and his coaching staff's failure to be able to improve the lists basic football skills is deplorable. **** him. Blow the whole thing up get rid of some highly rated overrated so called midfield guns and stick with some of the exciting young talent we have coming through and build a side around Mills & Heeney. Our top end are finished and the decline has been rapid. It does not help when 2 so called stars who should be at the peak of their powers are dead set bludging.
Oh and if Longmire goes lets hope he takes ******* Tippett with him. An absoloute embarrassment who has had every excuse in the book used for his ineptness. Pathetic.
Couldn't agree more, it's a dated game plan.

I feel like we're back where we were with Roos after '06.

Horse did get us to another grand final last year, in many ways against all odds, so I think saying he can't adapt is a bit simplistic. But in today's game you have to keep adapting.

What about trying to leave Buddy and Tippett forward and let that scum worry about them. No it won't happen because we don't adapt, or move on .

Would that have made any difference though? We lost because that scum's midfield was too good.

We used to run & carry the ball, even with slingshot. We don't run anymore, just handball-handball-up&under to a 2-on-1.

Has to go. The aliir decision was absolutely ridiculous. He has shown no ability to adapt over the years. far too one dimensional and to me it looks like he has lost the players
Not playing Melican round one was just as bad.
Why can't we play 3 tallls down back and leave Reid forward to perhaps kick a few?

Yeh. I thought Melican had a good trial and deserved a crack. Really happy he backed that up last night. Good debut under extreme pressure.

Wish we were playing a quality side this week to at least see what Horse would do if anything.

Being honest Carlton are in a world of pain and their list is not a scratch on ours.

I bet horse will go the same old stale garbage, players will bully it and he will get his positive reinforcement to carry on unfortunately.
