I see the opposite, we stuck fat not him..

Yeah, you're probably right. Not like he knocked back any jobs along the way. Maybe decided not to apply for one or two, but he certainly stuck his hand up when it suited him.

Good for Horse. Glad he's staying there. He's worked for it and I really didn't want him at North. Don't want any ex North greats for a while now.

Can you explain why that may be? I'm genuinely intrigued not trolling as to why you specifically don't want any North Greats as coach.

No troll intent taken.

I think we need a bit of a culture change. Arocca and Brayshaw have been working hard to achieve that off field.

We have a good young list. Now that Simmo is gone, we only have - I'm pretty sure, I could go and double check the list - one player associated with the 90s glory days and that's Boomer.

A new coach will come into a new facility with a new list and license to build something new.

In the dark days of the middle part of this decade when we had the rooms burning down and constant GC speculation, there was definitely a place for the Arden Street backs against the wall mentality. That intrsigience saved us from AFL-sponsored death on the GC.

Now though, we need something different.

Think of it this way. Say we land Morabito in this years draft. Bloke will have been all of about 8 years old when the whole Carey/Kelli thing kicked off. In my mind, while we still had Simmo and Laidley etc, there was the faint memory of that era around.

Time to build something new and fresh.

FFS - any kid/coach coming into North knows the history and the passion of the joint.

I just think now we don't have to wear our hard done by against all odds bleed blue and white badge on our sleeves all the time.

Time to become the quick, smart, tough, small but successful side from inner city Melbourne.

The side that doesn't make huge profits, but still makes them, and with no pokies to boot.

The side that can win a falg without ever having taken a priority pick.

The side that is an integral part of its local community, right down to sharing facilities with them, not a side that charges juniour members $20 to get a photo with their favourite player.

For that, we need someone outside the old circle.

Hinkley or Brad Scott for mine.

Longmire would have been a throwback to glory days that are never coming back.

I have to agree with SLF on this one - but from a different angle. Favourite sons are not necessarily the way to go in football. The most successful dynasties in football over the last 30 years or so have been built by foreigner coaches. Barrassi, Jeans, Sheedy, Parkin, Malthouse, Blight, Matthews. All coaching at clubs they did not play at. Makes you wonder why clubs think they can buck the trend. Sure it works occasionally, and in the most recent cases of Roos, Worsfold and Williams. But I think North Melbourne will be best served with an outsider giving the place a total overhaul.

There is that element too mate. I completely agree.

Lets face it... Horse has had the match day reigns for sometime now. Its him up in the box making all the moves. He is already an outstanding coach.

I am more than happy knowing he will still be there when Roos goes rather than hoping a Hardwick or Scott are an good.

Has anyone had normal conversation with Longmire. In his press conference he sounds a bit shy and not all there. Maybe he needs a bit of media work, ala Mark Harvey.

The succession plan may become the norm, even to the point where you have any coach come in, have a 2 yr contract, and his replacement ready to go.

Thanks, SLF - that says what a lot of us have been feeling, but better than we've been able to say it. Time to look forward, not backward.

Great job Swans. Sad to lose Roosy at the end of 2010 (I'll save the eulogies until then), but considering he was going anyway it's great to see them preserve continuity.

You'll be happy to read this -

http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7106/newsid/82599/default.aspx

Ireland’s first task would be to define Roos’ role at the club after he steps down at the end of 2010.

“Paul has indicated his very strong desire to stay involved with the club beyond 2010. We’re talking about talent identification, recruiting [and] player development,” he said.

Absolutely devastated that I'll be over seas next year and so won't be there for Roos' last game as coach. I guess I'll be treating Round 22 as his last game, so will be very emotional for me with also the send off for MOL, Crouch and Barry.

See, after winning a GF in '05, we backed up in '06.

Your mob wins a GF and looks very, very likely to not even make the 8 this year.

Therefore, not always prudent to just start talking shit.

And as a separate note, Miles Byron Hay (CEO) announced his standing down earlier this year and now Andrew Ireland will be assuming that spot promoted from football director.

Therefore, 2 succession plans at one time, a 12-month handover and a future team in place nice and smoothly.

I'll bet many teams wish they could orchestrate single changes, let alone generational ones this smoothly.

US based no doubt.

He did some promotional work with the USAFL after retiring and living there with his wife for awhile IIRC.
