Soft and injury prone. Wont play every game for port.
He's not soft, never has been, but yes, he is injury prone.

If he can stay fit though, he'll play every week for that mob, even if they did perform well today, that said more about how far the Saints have fallen then anything else.

I thought he was pretty soft at senior level for us. Not enough meat on his bones. How many times has he played against St kilda now? It has to be some sort of a record for playing against the same team with the number of games he has played.

Really disappointed we let him go, he'll be a good footballer. There is a reason why Malthouse spoke so highly of him. Unfortunately he never got a decent run at in at Collingwood. I prefer him to about 8-10 blokes on our list right now.

Anyway, good luck to him, he deserves to have a bit of luck go his way.

McCarthy is courageous, not soft, and has put meat on his bones according to PA supporters. He was injury free in his last year with us. He was a very good pick up for them. Also The Age named him fourth best player for PA against StKilda.

Good luck to him. Always thought he was a decent player. I'd definately keep him ahead of the likes of Rounds or Sinclair as midfield options. Buckley plays a different position albeit poorly adn one that we have depth in. I wouldn't neccessarily have kept McCarthy for Buckley but I wouldnlt have kept Buckley. McCarthy needed a new start and a contract. We would have had to pay Buckley out. We need to avoud payouts and wasting cap space. I can't see Buckley surviving at the end of the year.

I don't see Buckley, Sinclair or Young surviving this year, and certainly would have preferred McCarthy and even Danny Stanley. Both players have played well since being allowed to play a pivotal role in the midfield. We only gave them cameo or peripheral roles. We lament the fact that Ball is the only true inside midfielder on our list that is not out injured 90% of the time.

Buckley, Rounds, Sinclair, Ugle, Johnson and Tarrant will all almost certainly be off the list at the end of the year. It's pretty simple, most players have 2 year contracts, and some chunk then get offered 3 year deals because we like them. that means that somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of senior players are out od contract each year. We keep about half, and we let about half go, so each year we let, from a list of about 40, somewhere between 5 and ten go.

Last year we had to let McCarthy go, along with Davis, Leroy, Stubbs, Farmer and Dick.

Thats six, and we lost the same number off the rookie list.

We didn't keep Buckley in preference to mcCarthy, one was out of contract, the other was not.

We need to find room for Stewart and 2 draft picks minimum at the end of the year, and most likely promote Mooney and Hartley if all goes to plan, so five senior players will move on, and for salary cap reasons they will all be out of contract players. We have about 10 out of contract players, half of them will go.

Taz
Johnno
Buckley
Rounds
Sinclair

and I am tipping Ugle as well.

One or more of those guys might go elsrwhere and play decent footy.

thats life.

I was disappointed to lose McCarthy. Anyone who saw him in the VFL knows he is an AFL quality midfielder who can win contested balls & clearances. His trouble was he was competing for a spot in our midfield. With his injuries he never got a good run at it. When he did get a game he was thrown in as a half forward where he wasn't that well suited. He was a brilliant player to have as depth - he would have been well & truly handy in that Hawthorn game.

What I find strange is that there was no GWS or GC interest in him. Perfect for where both those teams are at.

I hope he has a good career at Port Adelaide.

He now gets an opportunity to be a starting midfielder at AFL level whereas if he stayed with us, he would be a fringe midfielder/flanker at best.

Can't begrudge a guy for wanting a chance to test himself in his preferred position with added responsibility.

Agreed he might of never been come an On-Baller with us but at a weaker side like Port is at the Moment he can play there and try and Cement himself there for Port

If he was Port's fourth best against Del Santo, Hayes etc then he surely could have been good enough to get a game with us as one of the B group mid-fielders. Port might be 'weaker' but they were good enough to beat St Kilda, and McCarthy is being hailed as one of the major reasons they won the game.

2 weeks ago we easily handles the Saints as well at Princess Park

We beat the Saints in a practice match and whatever you like to think about McCarthy, in his first game in the middle he was in the top 15% for his team. You cannot do much better than that at a new club. St Kilda may not be a great team, but Port were supposed to be worse.

That's the thing, he would have gotten a game last week if he were still at the Pies, but he would have also been dropped once the other senior players made their return. It was the reason he left, to play more football at AFL level.

I am not saying we should have moved heaven and earth to keep him, merely that in his first game up in a new team in his best position he did extremely well, perhaps well enough not to have lost his spot had he been playing for Collingwood. You can't drop a guy who is your 4th best player in an heroic win.

Really hope Macca can take a leaf out of Heath Scotland's book. Both wanted more oppurtunity, so they left a team in contention and went to another club lower on the ladder to get 22 games. Now Heath is one of the first picked at the Blues.

It is pretty easy to understand. We had no cap space as shown by the Leon, tooves and caff saga. mccarthy was off contract and prob wanted out as well. i am sure if we could have we would have kept him over buckley but one was contracted and one not.

I knew mccarthy would do well at a weaker club but we had no choice and he would have been nothing but depth here. i am just disappointed we got nothing for him.

Happy to see Jmac get a gig at Port. As others have already said, is a good player but wasn't able to cement a role at Collingwood when others of similar vintage and some younger, were.

He was only a depth player with us, similar to Stanley.

Given a role in a weaker midfield, he can be a valuable contributer. Good luck to the kid.

Well said. He's certainly AFL capable but must have been frustrated at the lack of opportunities. He saw a chance to get a regular gig in a developing midfield and took it. As with Heath Scotland we lost a handy player and one I had time for, but he made the right decision to go. If he was still with us, he'd be in and out like a yo-yo this year and that could have been the end of his career. As bummed out as I was to see him running around in another team's jumper, I wish him all the best.

He would have been getting plenty of opportunities this year with the spate of injuries we have at the moment,no luck at all this year so far for the Pies, surely it`s gotta swing our way soon!
