Meesen tells Crows he wants out

Jake Niall | September 28, 2007

ADELAIDE is set to lose another ruckman in the post-season, with young Victorian follower John Meesen seeking another home.
Adelaide last night was braced for the probability that Meesen would leave. "John's indicated he wants to have a look around," said the Crows' football manager John Reid.
Meesen has attracted the interest of Melbourne, which is seeking a young ruckman to support 30-year-old Jeff White, and is his likely choice.
Meesen is the second Adelaide ruckman to indicate he wishes to play elsewhere, following seasoned follower Ben Hudson's decision to seek a trade to the Western Bulldogs, who have offered him a three-year deal. Hudson is also from Victoria.
Meesen, who was drafted from the Geelong Falcons in 2004, has struggled for a game at West Lakes, with Hudson and young ruckmen Ivan Maric and Jonathan Griffin clearly ahead of him in the pecking order.
But with Hudson walking and the other experienced ruck, Rhett Biglands, recovering from a knee reconstruction, the Crows have suggested to Meesen that more opportunities should be forthcoming — an appeal that Meesen is certain to reject.
The Crows also contend that Meesen's progress this year was stymied by a kneecap injury that caused him to miss 11 weeks.

He was a high draft pick, so the crows will want compensation, but he hasn't lived up to all the wraps. I wouldn't want to give an early second round pick for him, but 37 would be on the cards (however it would be nice to draft one 18 year old this year) but the crows wont like that. Adelaide owe us something after snatching Scott Thompson for pick 12. It would be great to get him into the PSD, but we'd have to keep the Tigers and Blues out of the way.

A direct swap wit Jamar who is a SA boy???

Which pick do we have in the 30's?? is it 37 i believe that wud b a good deal.

either a straight swap for Jamar or pick 37

lol pick 37 for meeson

then pick 4 and 21 for juddy

are going to pick up a heap of kids at pick 80??

would love meeson though, maybe jamar and swap our 3rd round picks...

No ruckmen thanks. Biglands, Maric, Griffen and Tippett should go ok next year. Somewhere between your second and third pick should do the trick. The depth of the draft sucks this year !

Also, what's the deal with Bell ? Many of the AFC posters rate him and would be prepared to give up plenty for him.

Bell is a brilliant backman who really came into his own this year. He's as hard as nails and we rate him very, very highly. If he was considered a target by rival clubs he certainly wouldn't come cheap. And we're not overrating him either!

Bell was just about our best player this year, I see him a bit in the Campbell Brown mould. You would have to overpay by a fair way to get him.

You had a massive go at him last year, it didn't get much media news but you threw a fair bit at him, but he saw the light and signed on with us. I think he likes living in Melbourne more than Adelaide (how can you not!). I'm confident the club would refuse your first pick this year, so I think you wont be getting him.

Welsh in bad books

ADELAIDE formally lost two ruckmen - Ben Hudson and John Meesen - and put experienced forward Scott Welsh on notice yesterday.
Meesen, the club's first-round draft pick in 2004, has told the Crows he wants to be traded to Melbourne which has offered the 21-year-old a contract.
Hudson, the Crows' lead ruckman this season, has ended all negotiations with Adelaide and confirmed he will join the Western Bulldogs on a three-year deal. The Crows would not budge on offering the 28-year-old more than two seasons.
Welsh, who is out of contract, yesterday was identified by Adelaide as the player at the centre of a police report by an 18-year-old woman outside a Hindley Street nightclub last Saturday morning.
Adelaide has described Welsh's behaviour towards the teenager as "totally unacceptable". The Crows have written to Welsh and his management declaring a new contract will include a clause putting the 28-year-old forward at risk of being sacked if there is another off-field drama.
Adelaide did not fine Welsh, but ordered he seek behavioural counselling and a behavioural clause in his new contract.
Adelaide football operations manager John Reid said the Crows would now negotiate trades for Meesen and Hudson with both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne. Trade week opens on Monday week.
"There is nothing further to be done with Ben Hudson other than to do a deal with the Western Bulldogs," Reid said.
"John Meesen gave genuine thought to his future at Adelaide - which did change with Ben leaving the club - but has decided to join Melbourne."
Adelaide's difficulty in trade week is that neither the Bulldogs nor Melbourne are compelled to work a deal with the Crows.
The Bulldogs can claim Hudson - without compensation - with the fourth pick in the pre-season draft. Melbourne can do the same with Meesen with the No. 3 call in the pre-season draft.
Carlton, at No. 1, and Richmond, at No. 2, have declared they would pass up on Meesen and Hudson if they enter the draft as uncontracted players.

does this rule judd out? hopefully we can get him for free

Sorry to Adelaide supporters but I hope we use the pre-season pick for him. Which will have no effect on whether we get Judd or not. I think it also means Jamar might be up for delisting now, maybe the crows can have him, if they want him!

I doubt we will delist Jamar. Remember we already delisted Neaves and we really should have 4 ruckmen on our list, no matter how shit they are.

Anyone think Bailey had anything to do with this? Probably saw a bit of him over in Adelaide, might have liked what he saw.
