Re: Meesen

Wont start ahead of Johnson but will ahead of Jamar. Both meeson and johnson have good foot skills yet Johnson is quicker and a better ruckman. Jamar goes for big marks:thumbsu:. Unfortunately none are over 200 cms.

if you can get inside his mind and get him to believe in himself then you have a very good 200 game ruckman.

amongst other things, he can run all day and he lays some hard tackles too

IMO if he's given a decent run of consecutive games then he will get the confidence and intensity to be a really good player

you got yourselves a bargain

Obviously when a team gives away a player to another team then the supporters are always going to gloat about it such as some Crows fans on BF. A couple of Crows fans have said he has promise and athletic ability but I don't really care what the fans think either way. I care what the AFC thinks and to be honest I am not too confident about this whole Meesen thing. As soon as we gave AFC our pick (37 was it) for Meesen they straight away got another ruckman in Brad Moran with the same pick we gave for Meesen.

I really hope the club did their homework on this because I have a bad feeling they may have stuffed up. No point in arguing because only the future will tell but I reckon the Crows did pretty well out of this. Perhaps we should have cut out the middle man and got Brad Moran ourselves... oh well I hope I am proved wrong.

Meesen wanted to go. Moran is an option to play as a KPP or ruck and is far more of an athlete than a footballer. Meesen just needs AFL games, something he didn't get at the AFC.

He should play all NAB cup for you guys.

I cant seem him getting any AFL games in 08. His 2nd efforts are VERY disappointing.

Ok I think Dees fans need to settle down a little when it comes to John Meesen. He could not get a game for Adelaide at a time when they had their first choice ruckman out for the yeat (Rhet Biglands) and another coming back from a reco (Ben Hudson) and instead of giving Meesen a crack at it, they play young Griffen. Look he might turn out to be a handy player but lets not pin our hopes on him just yet!! Hopefully it will be White, Johnson, Meesen, Jamar.

It's a long way from round 1 but he started well. Came 3rd behind Jones and Mclean (respectively) in the 2 1500m time trials today at training. Cannot ask for anymore than that!

Today was the first day of training was it not??? Did you get down there, did you notice anyone had done anything productive in their two months off, or if anyone has done a Byron Pickett.

Fresh start for Meesen

AFTER three years with Adelaide, Melbourne recruit John Meesen feels like he’s starting over and the 200cm giant couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to kick start his AFL career with the Demons.
“I’m pretty rapt to have come across back to Melbourne,” Meesen said shortly before his first training session at Junction Oval on Wednesday.
“Hopefully there will be a lot more opportunity for me next year and I’m looking to start off with a good pre-season starting today.
“My fitness is at a substantial level, I’d say [I need] a lot of body strength still and a bit of game knowledge.
“A lot of the guys I was drafted with have gone on and stamped themselves in the side at their club. I’m just looking to start again, start fresh and put everything behind me and look forward to playing footy with the Melbourne footy club.”
Meesen was drafted by the Crows with the eighth pick overall in the 2004 NAB AFL National Draft and, along with Ivan Maric who was selected 40th overall in the same year, was seen as the future of Adelaide’s ruck division.
But the 21-year-old cited injuries and “perception” issues for a disappointing lack of opportunity that saw Maric and elevated rookie Jonathon Griffin move ahead of him in the pecking order.
Meesen broke through for his AFL debut in round 20 this year against the Bulldogs and played the following week against Brisbane, but was replaced by Griffin for the side’s final two matches of the season.
“My first year and a half I probably wasn’t ready and didn’t have the body for AFL footy, but along with injury across my three years at Adelaide, I guess the opportunity here is a lot better I’d say,” he said of the move that saw the Crows receive pick 37 in return.
“I weighed up my options at the end of the season. With Ben Hudson leaving I thought it opened up a big opportunity at Adelaide for me for the No.1 ruck spot, but I still thought my footy had gone a bit sour over in Adelaide and I just needed something fresh.
“Myself and Ivan, we were both injured at the same time early on in the season, and he got back a month earlier than me and started playing good footy, but I found that I put myself ahead of him by the end of the year anyway.
“I looked at all my options and Melbourne showed the most interest and I thought I’d probably be best suited to come to Melbourne, opportunity-wise I’d say.
“It was definitely a football decision. [In] Adelaide I was really happy with the place and everything but just wanted a fresh start.”
Meesen met new Melbourne coach Dean Bailey for the first time as he looked for a new football home and he came away with a favourable first impression.
“He’s good,” he said. “I’ve met him a couple of times, he’s pretty hard but fair and he looks like he’s a coach that you’d love to play for.”
For his part, Bailey is excited by the options that the highly athletic big man with a huge upside offered.
"John's only young, he can run, and I think he can be a really competitive, mobile tall for us," Bailey said.
"He obviously can ruck. I've seen him play when he was at Norwood, so he's going to bring some excitement.
"He's very keen. He's a power runner, and an elite runner at 200cm is a special ingredient so we just need to work with him and give him some confidence and opportunities, and I think John will really take the challenge up.
"He's a really exciting player."
Bailey offered no promises while courting his new recruit and Meesen was happy to be involved in a three-way tussle with Mark Jamar and Paul Johnson to back up lead ruckman Jeff White.
Even if he’s beaten out for that role by either of his competitors early on, Meesen is confident that playing with the rest of the Demons for Sandringham in the VFL will provide him with a better footing to launch himself into senior footy.
“It was difficult,” Meesen said of the system that saw him playing for Norwood in the local competition as he learned the ropes.
“I mean you go and train at Adelaide for a certain style of play and then you go back to your SANFL club and they might play a different way or they might play you in a different position from where Adelaide might see you.
“So I think the set-up over here will be a lot better.”
As for his new teammates, the former Geelong Falcon is already familiar with Matthew Bate, Lynden Dunn and Michael Newton, having played against them in the Victorian under-18 competition, and they have offered him a warm reception as he embarks on the next phase of his career.
“The players have been good,” he said.
“I’ve met probably half of them so far and they’ve all been pretty accommodating and gone out of their way [to say hello].
“I’d probably say I have a bit to prove to myself and probably people that have doubted me, but I believe that I can.”
