RussellEbertHandball on "The Pavaroti music at the end of the Port/WC final" asks (in part) '.....How many times did they play part of John Schumann's song? You wouldn't have picked it up on the TV but it's bloody stirring stuff'.
Similar comments are appearing in other threads. I agree, played in snatches through the game it was brilliant. Helps to define being a Wharfie. This was a serious chance of being our theme song as we set up for 1997. I think we made the right choice but using the two in conjunction like last night really adds to the experience of being at the game.

And

From John Schumann's website. Only the chorus has been changed to his 2002 One True Game song. I remember he launched it on The Footy Show and thought what a great footy song. Whenever I returned to SA and listened to the start of MMM's footy coverage they always play the chorus as part of their intro music. I love the lines 100,000 voices and a million shining eyes, this is our country's one true game.

One True Game
I'm truckie, I'm a wharfie,
I'm the girl who cuts your hair;
I'm a mother, I'm a father,
I'm the old man over there.
And Friday night to Sunday,
We lay it all aside -
And arm to arm and heart to heart we raise this mighty cry…

100,000 voices and a million shining eyes
This is our country's one true game
And the footy ground's on fire
And Australia's sons and daughters, under wide Australian skies
Win or lose, we're back again, to claim the winner's prize…

We were here at the beginning
And we'll be here at the end,
Running with a three goal breeze
Or kicking against the wind.
It's more than just a game to us,
You're more than just a team
And when the final siren goes, we'll show you what we mean …

Life's a game of footy
And it never goes to plan
You can run into the empty space
Try to throw your tag…
You've got both eyes on the scoreboard
As you're running for the ball
And you feel your heart is bursting and you're just about to fall … you hear

100,000 voices and a million shining eyes
This is our country's one true game
And the footy ground's on fire
And Australia's sons and daughters, under wide Australian skies
Win or lose, we're back again, to claim the winner's prize…

The new chorus is;

Power to the people and power to the game,
Power to Port Adelaide, it's where we get our name.
And Alberton sons and daughters, under South Australian skies,
Win or lose, we're back again, to claim the winner's prize.

What are you on about?
Firstly, my comment was directed at Porthos.

Secondly, my edit was meant to inform you of that.

Next number, inasmuch as calling you a cynic might be seen as an insult I had no intention of starting a fight with anyone - so, I apologise.

Last number, whilst John Schumann in a Dryasabone and an Akubra normally makes me want to puke, I like this song, and, thanks to REH, have it.

When Port were playing and I was on the plane back to the USA I was watching USA v John Lennon - really got into the song 'Power To The People', thankfully when I got off the plane we had the right result.

Damn good song - liked it when we played it a few times in that particular season and often wondered why they dispensed with it.
Would be good as a pre-game (say in the half hour to hour prior to team entrances) thingo.
Did my own updated video.
