Love the comments about the pointing. I have been waiting weeks for someone to cobble together a youtube video of him dropping marks, missing goals (last weeks shot was a classic), missing targets but highlighting the quality of his pointing.

That aside, when on form, Johnson is a seriously talented footballer. He's had a bad season but did get off to a bad start. You have to weigh up whether you could get better in the draft and guaranteed 190+ cm players don't last till pick 20+.

When the commentators say the player pool is being diluted, this is what they are talking about. All clubs will have their share of the flaky but talrnted players. You just have to hope you don;t get so many injuries they're not under selection pressure.

Huge endorsement from Harvey on the radio tonight. Basically called him untradeable. Need to hear it again, not sure i believed what i was hearing.

Basically said we'd be looking at Mitch Clark if he became available also which i think is a bit of a surprise. With Sandilands/Clarke/Griffin/Johnson/Keplar not sure where Clark could fit in.
Surprise. Where have you been. There's been plenty of rumour and innuendo that a Clark trade has been on the cards for the last two years. He still hasn't signed with Brisbane.

I know I've been pumping it for two years. Trading and drafting isn't just about where players would fit. Typically drafting is going after the best available players. 200 cm players who can run like him are damn rare.

The only people who think he is not worth anything are Freo BF posters who don't even loike their own players.

So no nous goes into his recruitment, just because there aren't many like him, we should get him. What kind of strategy is that?

Call me soft but Im just not willing to write him off yet. I mean at the end of last year he was fantastic for us, and does anyone remember when he started with us?? He has the talent, theres no doubt.

Firstly I wonder if he's been carrying injuries this year, but mostly I'd love to see what kind of effect having to fight for his place would have on him. I mean I think offering him a reduced contract and making him start the year in the WAFL could just do the trick.

Or maybe he just needs someone to tell him the truth. It worked with Gary Ablett jr. He was lazy, his team mates told him to htfu, and he's arguably the best player in the comp now.

Probably Im wrong but I want to see him have one more shot.

your soft. and johnson has disgraced our jumper week in week out for years, hearing harvey the other night saying we wouldnt trade him almost made me want to drive into an oncoming truck....:mad:

I still believe Johnson's best position is on a wing not inside the 50m arcs. He's also good as a loose man across CHB.

Karl also asked Harvey if we were going to get rid of Solomon.

This is from a guy who wrote a review of our list in the paper over the weekend. I wish I got paid to comment on shit I know nothing about.
He was under the assumption that because Solomon called it quits and was still a year left on his contract (I think) then we had him as a player on our list.

After the Mal Michael event I believe the rules were changed so that a club holds rights to a player for the length of their contract, they don't become free agents on retirement anymore.

So he may have been delisted, but if GCS or GWS listed him, we'd require a trade and a compensation pack of crisps.

It's not his fault he's selected week in week out.

I'd keep him for another year if it was made clear to him he is outside the best 22 and would have to work for a spot. His talent would make him a decent depth player.

If he's going to get another free ride through his yo-yo performances next year then it's not worth having him at all

To comment that tall mobile players are hard to find is irrelevant in the case of MJ. He can't take a contested mark or defend so he really plays like a 6 footer - he should be judged as one. Underperforming - he can not cover a spot for a tall.

I have been no fan of Jack Anthony but seeing him spoil and impact the contest on Friday night says to me bring in JA and ditch MJ. JA can be our third defender to replace Grover.

And here I was thinking that you trade for needs, not best available.

Must have gotten that mixed up?

We're sorted for ruckmen. Clark is a ruckman/forward. We'd have to sell off the farm to get him (in terms of picks), as teams like St Kilda, or Geelong or Richmond will just about trade their left nut to get him. What does Clark offer that Kep doesn't, if you ignore the rucking part?

Just because he's available doesn't mean we need to make a play for him.

But as you say, we're just posters on BF. My hope is that the coaches/recruiters don't get too caught up in the hype.

You wouldn't be making excuses for him because you're in the media too, would you Bradey?

I love Kep but I think Clark as a CHF is a far more dangerous proposition.

Kep should be fighting Mayne for the 3rd forward role

If Clark was happy to play CHF full time then I can understand it. It just seems like we'd have to give up a fair bit for a bloke that offers an upgrade on a guy we've already got (Kep).

Noting that you mention Clark at CHF instead of FF... is this to enable Pav to play at FF as he'll be past it as a CHF in a couple of years? So getting him to FF now to give the team time to work with the new CHF?

As for Kep fighting Mayne for the 3rd forward, just reckon that'd be too much height in the forward line when we play the resting ruckman in there as well (if Kep is picked as the 3rd forward).

Why? What's he done to suggest it?

He will cost around as much as Tarrant, and is half the footballer. Seriously, what the **** are you seeing?

Firstly separate price and my comments - I do not advocate trading our 1st round draft pick....I am hoping it comes largely on the back of players we are sending out.

What am I seeing? What I see as a key to winning games in the modern era - a big bodied forward who I can nail down as a target.

Clark is big ..check
Clark is mobile and good on the lead..check
Clark has a bit of mongrel about him.

It is only my opinion Clay, but when ever I have seen Clark play - he strikes me as someone who has the ability to be a forward who dominates the forward space.

If you don't see Clark as a better forward option than Kep ...your opinion and you are welcome to it....I disagree.

Clark demands the ball, and to me we often lack that decisive option when we are moving forward. Station Pav & Clark in the forward 50 and get Ballantyne & De Boer at their feet ...looks more dangerous than any set up we had on the oval this season.

Sure drafting is about going after the best available because most of the players picked are 5-6 years away from their best footy and you can't be sure of where your list will be at down the track. But it would be crazy to trade early picks and/or quality players and throw a big chunk of your salary cap at a player unless they actually fill a role you're lacking.

That's page one of the Cameron Schwab Land A BIg Fish At Any Price Handbook.

How often does that happen though Moo? Very rarely do good players get traded for 2 or 3 okay players, it's almost always a draft pick(s) + a cherry on top.

They'll want our first rounder + the compensation pick for Rhys which in a weak draft looks about right but at the same time is a hell of a lot for a guy that we don't really need.

The compensation pick can be held over until the next draft when it may not be as weak though, yes?

Good call and you're right, but regardless they'll want our first rounder + ?????.

I agree that this'll be what they're chasing. And they'll be looking to use it next year.

This is a big part of the reason why I'd rather us let Clark slip the net, keep our picks, recruit a good KPF with our first rounder this year and grab the best available inside/outside mid or KPF/KPD with the compo pick next year.

We've got Kep. Kep isn't as good as Clark, fair enough, but why mortgage our future (two first round picks) for the gap between Kep and Clark.

Just don't get it.

Excellent post I couldnt agree more. Clark would only be helpful if we were going to challenge for a flag next yr and tho we may improve significantly next yr I'd like us to finish in the top four before we have the arrogance to trade away our top picks for players who offer little more than Keplar and Johnson and cost a hell of a lot more.

Up til now Harvey and Co. have been pretty good with the trading/drafting I hope they dont let us down this yr.

Then I wouldn't advocate taking him, unless our view of the draft is that dim.

I don't know what the price is going to be? However if we trade out Palmer and Griffin - that is a solid trading base.

The fact Clark wants to move weakens Brisbanes hand immediately.
