benny dude, thats a cop out. You and everyone else knows that what you suggest can be based purely on a face saving act by the brains trust. I mean, the allmighty new improved recruiting regime, cant afford to delist another high draft pick. So he willl get his 3 year deal. But having said that, and going from previous experience with youngsters, there was another player who was once so so, and i am not kidding, had real doubts about him, that over one pre season came out and kicked butt. Take a guess? JON should be given that usual length of development time. Youngsters tend to have trouble finding the pace of the game, whether it be 1s or 2s, You see, they are used to no pressure at junior level, since they were that good, they most likely had the ball on a string, and were toying with their opposition. They get to play against men, and they forget that they are not in the junioe comp anymore.;)

Not following you. Cogs? Petts..?

As for the last part of your post, JON played WAFL against men and never had the ball on a string. What's your point anyway, that junior comps are easier than AFL?

At least he's finding the ball. He has extreme pace and agility, great overhead and good defensive pressure, mainly in spoiling, his kicking isn't as bad as it's made out it is more his decision making that needs work. He shows fantastic aggression which is uncharacteristic of skinny players and is a leader.

We have a lot of natural talent to work with here. Let's hope the Richmond development staff give him the best chance to improve! We don't have a great record at developing our own...

Agree completely and it goes across the entire AFL.

Winderlich at Essendon started coming good at the end of last year and has been brilliant this year. Its his 5th year on Essendons list.

Jason Gram is another prime example, took 4 or 5 years to find his feet.

Andrew Walker has shown potential but has steped up another level this season, his fourth.

Could probably look at most sides and find players in similar positions. Got to give kids more the 2 or 3 seasons.

he has all that benny, what his lacks big time is awareness. WHy i dont know, but he constantly forgets that he is on a footy oval and there are 18 other guys on it that are playing against him. It at times borders on complete brainlessness, of Tom Roach proportions. That is not good. But i am patient, god forbid, we have Petts, Hyde and Tiv in the ones dont we? Surely this kid should at least be given 3 or 4 and maybe even 5, when the 3 stooges have been given 7 and 8 or 9 dont you think?
The guess? you got it totally wrong, Petts IMO is not of AFL standard, the one that came out and kicked butt, was Cogga. One year he was a plodder that was totally off the pace, the next he had the gift. So it does happen, and when it does it happens early, not after 8 or 9 years. If you know what i mean. ;)

Add Shaun Burgoyne who took 4-5 years to do anything.

Could add a head of players. Salopek, Scott Thompson, Luke Hodge (Lots of injuries similar to JON), Travis Johnstone, Goddard, Robert Murphy, Joel Corey, Mcmahon and Headland. They are all 1st rd draft picks, not to mention 4 no.1 draft picks. And you could probably keep going.

With all due respect CC, wonderworld is a waste of time. He is the consumate, fill a spot, because we have to, type of player. i.e. another turnover king that gives oppositon supperters reason to laugh and bomber suppoters cryng , no no no!!!! His days are limited, if sheeds is not just pulling puds. ;)

I don't know if he'll be a star.

Howver, you do seem to know he'll be a dud.

That is the difference, you think you can map out a player's future on a few glimpses at 19 years of age, I am far less confident in making these assertions. I say he shows signs that he could go either way, and so far he probably shows more positives than negatives imo

This is why I don't mind defending him, he is on track to be a 'good' player atm with potential to either be a star or a dud. You act like you know for sure he is a dud, I don't act like I know for sure because I don't.

As a general rule, I don't write off any player under 21. Even Dean Cox was labelled a chronic dud at 21, and Foley was nothing at 20. There's always hope they are young and on a list, especially young and being a high draft pick. Doesn't make it a certainty, but enhances their chances.

yet we also have....

I would DEFINATELY still take JON, he is going to be way better.

JON will take 3 years to develop so give him that time. He will be a great player for us, he has shown some amazing signs at Coburg this year to show he is a very special one of a kind player who will be a favourite of ours for many years.

which is it, good, great, special, dud, star?

I agree with others re Jon needing more time on the list. I also think that the brains trust have him earmarked for a backline positiion picking up one of the opposition talls and rebounding. If you consider his progress in this context his skill set is appropriate, but needs maturing.

Pretty simple isn't it?

He is "on track" to be a good player, as I said.

His form at Coburg has left me coming home thinking he will be a "great player for us" when he matures, so I said he needs more time for this to happen.

Keep up will you?

And to the above poster - they recruited him with the hope he would become a modern day CHB and this is where I have seen him play his best football. Maybe I rate him higher than a few on here because he has played better at CHB/HBF than in the midfield and on the wing where he played on TV? He has shown more tools than Varcoe at least imo, decision making is the crunch tool and if improved with experience JON could be anything.

You say he WILL become a great player for us. Then its a 'good player' with the potential to be a star or dud!!!! Absolute fence sitting comments. Have an opinion and stick to it.

You still don't understand, do you?

Most people would say he is on track to become a good player, but it is of my opinion that he will be a great player. He has the potential to be a star but I am not saying it is a 100% certainty, how can I call him a certain star? That would be an ignorant opinion - much like anyone who calls him a certain dud.

In other words in my opinion he will reach some of his "star" potential, but not all of it. That means great player, in the top 5-12 players of the club (like where Petts is at his best), even if at the current rate he may only be a good player in the 12-20 range. Is there another way for me to spell it out or are we clear?

lol

Hey being the 5-12th best player in the bottom team isn't much to sing about!

The 5-12th best player in a top 4 team however... :D

yeah and according to you, Petts at his best, can slide in seamlessly into a WC or Swans outfit. He can just take over from also rans like Nick Davis, or Michael Oloughlin. ;)

i think jon needs a little more time before we hang him at least 1 more year maybe 2 hopefully we can see a bit of size added this summer which will help his confidence.
i like this kid he works hard and has a real dip

Most people?? I dont think most people think he will be a good player. What is it then 73.5%!!!! ANYONE listed on an AFL list has 'potential' and therefore could be a top 5-12 player. You're expressing an opinion with a whole range of qualifications, which is pointless. quote, he will reach some of his "star" potential!! wtf.

This is the JON thread, not the Jackson one.

You're bagging so many players you can't keep up!

I am prepared to say JON will still be on our list in 5 years, can't say I expect Jackson to be unless his footy smarts improve.

Just have a look at previous players who have been on our list for 7 years... even David Bourke did it! Ray Hall, Andrew Krakouer, Chaffey, Hyde etc.. JON isn't terrible, he has enough good qualities to hang around for a while and if he doesn't reach his potential he'll be gone around 6 years in. Anyway this is getting boring.
the fact that these players have lasted so long is one of the reasons why we have been so poor and our list never seems to improve.

whilst its way to early to make a call on jon especially with his body type. its certainly not unreasonable to question the wisdom in useing pick 8 on him
which is all most people are doing.
