Toast Jonathan Brown appreciation thread

Hard to know what to say exactly and plenty have already said it better than I can. What I do know is that I can't think of a player I've enjoyed watching more. Thanks for the memories big fella. Legend.

My wife was lucky enough to get a photo with Browny leading up to the '03 GF. She made sure that picture took pride of place in our house for a number of years - and all the while it covered our marriage certificate. :)

I seriously hope we don't lose the great man to any coaching or even mentoring role at the Suns.

Our young forwards will need all the help they can get in the coming years and there is no better teacher that the great man himself.

I'm more worried about the Magpies finally getting their dirty hands on him allowing him to do plenty of media work in Melbourne.

I didn't realise it but...

I've been saving my milestone (pebble) 100th post for this...;)

Ah Browny...every time I have been to a game or seen him play I've tried to appreciate what a gem we have had the privilege to have at our club.

We've had some serious ups over this millennium and more than a couple of gems, but today is about Browny.

That one finger BrownySalute after kicking a goal from the pocket that the commentators continually got surprised about.
That courage that is awe inspiring to his teammates.
So many memories...and for now, no more new ones with Browny.

The tweets from all the throughout the AFL shouts of his standing in the game and as a person.

Who better than to continue to mentor the new breed of Lions, at least until the end of the year (I hope its longer).

Go Lions

THANK YOU BROWNY - IT HAS BEEN SUCH A PRIVILEGE.

Sorry to intrude. Just wanted to say Jonathan Brown is an absolute warrior. Hugely respected and immensely talented. Good luck to him.

EVeryone was saying he shouldn't have played the extra year.

But his games against Carlton and Bulldogs showed he still had what it takes, and walks away a legend.

Must be in the hall of fame in 5 years time.

Browny made it totally clear that he is staying in Queensland for the long haul. It's home.

Lethal has shown any media career can be done in the AFL living in Queensland. Be interesting if he decides on a coaching career if he will be forced to relocate then.

Will miss him :( End of an era. Thanks for the memories Browny!

Bruce Eva (3AW) has tweeted that only three players have retired on 256 games....Cowboy Neale, Leon Cameron and Jonathan Brown

...all Warrnambool boys.

At the Bulldogs game there was about 15 of us all sitting on Level 2 above the cheer squad and everyone was from Warrnambool and had a direct link to Warrnambool and Browny. We chatted about what it would be like when he retired and marvelled that sans Moloney (who we discussed at length) there were still 4 Hampden League players at the Lions and 3 actually playing in the game.

Little did we know it would be the last time we would see him play live for the mighty lions.....

Some things stick with you - his wave and acknowledgement and engagement with the fans at the end was pretty emotional and he left the ground as a winner which is what he was and always will be.

Anyone who criticised his efforts in recent years is misguided - he worked his arse of that night and left nothing in the tank. I'm just glad I got to see him play live again one last time.

I feel privileged just to share the same first name with the big fella. What an unbelievable player we were lucky enough to have roam our forward line for 14 years. Goes without saying... we'll miss ya JB :(

And I thought that the flogging from Dockers would be the worst part of my week!

Worse still I need to tell my 7 year old who just spent a week telling anyone who would ask Browny is his favourite player that his hero has retired. (Will definitely use all my parental influence to see that his new fave becomes #38!)

I'm sure the big fella himself would tell us all to harden up, but that's going to take some doing. Might have to put a call to Dr Brian Ironwood to discuss my sadness...

So many good memories. The brightest early career memory I have is his 7 goals against Geelong at the Gabba in 2001. Showed that he wasn't just a workhorse CHF, but a goal threat as well.

He had such brilliant delivery from outside 50 as well, and his assists were almost as good as his goals even though they won't be marked down in the history books.

We might find another player who can match his output, but we can never replace him.

Thank you for everything Browny

Courageous, articulate, quintessentially Australian and a truly loyal Lion.

One of the great on-field leaders and hardest workers on the park.

A dead-eye shot from anywhere on the 50m arc.

A great link to our Fitzroy past and a great role model for sticking it out in a new city.

I hope his aura, attitude and professional approach to football spreads to every other player on our list.

The end of a great era for our Club and the AFL, but the start of the rest of his life. The right decision at the right time.

Thanks JB.

Yeah for all the talk of running back with the flight, I think I will oddly miss the set shots the most. Just that anticipation when he marked the ball 50 metres out on a 45 degree angle. You know it was always very likely but it never became less of a thrill, and he still was able to do it rigth up to the end.

I remember people saying in his mid 20s that he'd struggle to play to 30 before his legs just couldn't carry him anymore. In the end, his body held up remarkably well considering the slog he put it through. ****ing head knocks.

Sorry guys I have to take to take the blame here. I have been to three games this year.

The first - Rich ACL

The second - West ACL

The third - Brown concussed leading to retirement

I'm worried about what will happen at my next game.

Would you like to go to every single remaining Collingwood game?

14 minute mark, 2nd quarter vs GWS.

Golby kicks a 25m chip pass, hits Brown on the lead virtually uncontested, right on the 50m arc, on the wing in front of the section 30 faithful at the Gabba. Goes back, goes through the routine, while we cheer on over his left shoulder a few metres away. Comes in and slots in.

Browny's last goal. :(

Thank you Browny.

Thanks for the times you got us over the line or even put your body on the line. The #16 will be missed. I will also miss me screaming at the tv or the footy whenever the ball was kicked into the 50 meter area shouting "BROWNY'S BALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Thank you again JB

Was one of the best for slotting goals from the pocket especially on the wrong side. None of this banana attempt crap from 40 metres that miss everything. Browny would just go back and back himself to kick the ball straight, and straight it would fly.
