Toast Jonathan Brown appreciation thread

When ever his last game is, and where ever it is all members and supporters need to turn up and show him what he has meant to us over all these years. The man is a gun and a champion and needs to be sent out in style.

On a side note, I think his book comes out at the end of this year, should be a good read, can't wait to here about Collingwood offer.

I thought his head knock on Saturday was more due to bad luck rather than a consequence of how Browny plays but I haven't seen the replay. He's been more unlucky than anything else, in terms of his head knocks.

It was a bit of both. From TV looked like he pushed off the GWS player to dive backwards to mark it and was unlucky that Trealor I think was running past with his man at the same time. Hip to head, so much so it put Trealor on the ground holding his hip in agony.

Yeah i thought Treloar would be out as well. A lot of metal in that face.

I also don't want him to change his game style for the sake of 4 goals. I agree with the Doctor's/Physio call. I'll weep for Adonis when he's dead, not before.

He has many years post-football ahead of him. As much as it hurts to say it, for his health's sake I think the time has come to call it a day. I'd be surprised if he played out the season.

Considering it was his left side that ended up taking the impact, Browny had to steer into it with the cyborg half of his face, because it looked like he was copping it on the right at normal speed.

As for how multiple concussions can impact you in later life - obviously it is not good / increases your risk a fair bit, but it is nowhere near clear cut that it will definitely lead to something really bad. For every Greg Williams there are probably a hundred guys that don't get affected.
It is not definite but there is a pretty strong correlation. Certainly strong enough for the AFL to have bought in multiple concussion rules. The guys who are not effected that you mention most likely did not get multiple severe concussions like Brown has over his time.

Studies are being done on sports people in America in connection to the relationship between concussions and alzeimers as these people get older.

Not sure if it is David Parkin, but one of our past coaches is taking part in a similar study here.

I also know of a person in mid 40's who had numerous serious concussions playing aussie rules at lower levels who is now showing signs of alzeimers. When this person was playing, not a lot of thought was given to the consequences and lasting affects, and often played again the next week.

To just dismiss the future affects would be foolhardy imo..

The future effects tend to be a illness called CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) that's popping up a lot in ex-NFL players. It's strongly linked to concussions. The closest of any link to Alzheimer's is that the brain plaques common in Alzheimer's patients are also found in those suffering many concussions. However there's not enough understanding about how these mechanisms work to say it's the same illness, let alone it causing Alzheimer's - just that the one of the symptoms are present.

Pretty sure it was Bugg.

Knowing Browny he'll play out the year but you couldn't blame him if he hangs up the boots. Him being healthy for his family is much more important than the game/club.

He was starting to play good footy again, so he has proven he could have played another year. With a concussion he has to put his wife and children first and I honestly hopes he announces his retirement effective immediately later this week.

He is a champion of the club, but its time to put his family and health first.

Pretty sure it was Bugg..

Nothing worse than Bugg squished on your windscreen.

Big Jon is our last connection to the premiership era, and I think its time for him - for his own sake. He's giving us and the club more than enough.

This is a man who gets hit by a car on a leisurely bike ride... is he really safer OFF a football field?

Been time for quite a while IMO, he has had his own teammates looking sideways trying to keep out of his way, because either a lack of peripheal vision or his steadfast belief about keeping his eyes on the ball to his and others detriment.

Great player, but its OK to hear footsteps from time to time.

Bring out the headgear browny

Interesting.

Is there anything in the rules of the game that say you can't actually wear a helmet?

I mean a real metal helmet (either cricket or NFL style), not one of those Shaun Hart/Jonathon Thurston jobs.

Anyone?

I don't know, but don't think it would work out for the other bloke lol.

Longer we wait, the more nervous I get though. Would be fantastic if he does decide to give it up, to have a fair well game against the kangaroos.

Funny thing about helmets, there is only one reference to helmets in the game rules that I can see:

http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/2012/AM_6967_0112_AFL_laws.pdf

9. Players’ Boots, Jewellry (sic) and
Protective equipment
9.1 Interpretation
For the purposes of this Law 9, Protective Equipment includes but is
not limited to:
(a) hard-shell helmets;
(b) knee braces;
(c) shoulder pads;
(d) back supports;
(e) arm guards; and
(f) any other item designated as such by the relevant
Controlling Body.

However, in the next section:

9.2 Prohibition of Items
A Player shall not wear during a Match:
(a) any form of jewellery; (sic)
(b) bootstuds, plates/cletes or any Protective Equipment (other
than Protective Equipment approved by the Controlling Body)
unless the field Umpire is satisfied that the item does not
constitute a danger or increase the risk of injury to other
Players competing in the Match; or
(c) Protective Equipment which has been approved by the relevant
Controlling Body, if the field Umpire is satisfied that such
equipment has, during the Match, become dangerous or
increased the risk of injury to other Players.

So I think the AFL would have to rule on it, though if it posed a risk to other players they'd say no. Though from memory James Hird had a bit of a reinforced helmet after his face got pummeled that time, so it would be case by case.

That said, I don't think Brown would be the type of player to want to wear a helmet. We're talking about a guy that got hit by a car, and the car had to get towed from the scene.

Phil Narkle played for StKilda in the 80s from memory, with a crash helmet of some form.

It was far more solid than the traditional "Bike" helmet of the time (worn by players at the time like the Roys Chris Smith and Garry Wilson), which morphed into the headgear worn at AFL level by Nathan Burke, Sean Hart and Jason Dunstall after his injury, which is essentially similar to the one worn by JT in RL.

Depends if its from the 13th century or not to.
