Toast Jonathan Brown appreciation thread

His retirement presser was reflective of the man himself. Strong and clear on his message, showing his love for the club and a good serve of humour right to the end. A team man through and through, for so long he was the Brisbane Lions, but never thought himself bigger than the club or its fans. For me watching football from now on will always have that small piece missing. Thank you Browny, you were a champion to the end.

At no stage since the last head knock against GWS had I accepted that he would call time, but I've now come to the very sad realisation that it is all over.

Just a sad sad day and continues on what a forgettable year it is for the club.

The Brisbane Lions just doesn't feel the same without a Voss, Black or Brown leading the charge.

Gone but not forgotten. Let's take the legacy of that one great team and create a great club.

You watch Rocky throwing himself into everything for a lost cause on Saturday night and you can tell those three are still having an influence, and will always be an influence.

Today is also the one year anniversary of the Miracle on Grass - I think as fitting a day as ever for him to retire.

Just went outside with my co-workers and had a kick of the footy for him.

Geez kezz, I'd just wiped away the tears, then I see you here again and the tears reappeared! Welcome home luv, great to see you.

SEN call themselves the home of the AFL, but need a serious talking to.

Cut in halfway through Leigh's Opening comments.
Left before Brown finished speaking.

Absolute disgrace.

A legend of our club and a legend of the game, the lions will never be the same without you browny, thank you for all the good times, congratulations on your amazing career and good luck for the future, I hope you stick around at the mighty Lions in some capacity mate!!!

Did they have to rush to a breaking story about a Collingwood rookie list player wearing a hat?

I have always feared the day. He is someone I have looked up to since I was 12-13, not only as a footballer but also generally in Life and the way he goes about it. He is a genuine Australian symbol of an 'honest, down to Earth' Character in a time where ego runs wild.

I have been baffled by the critisism of him from people like Brayshaw this year, obviously they havent been watching Lions games and TBH, a few people should really be offering an apology. Anyone who watched even a handful of games would see he has been more than servicable, the whole 'He has gone on one season too long' notion was insulting. I was really enjoying watching him this year and he had been really good most weeks IMO.

I think he has made the right call, for himself and his family. I think the team will benefit in a round about way too, about way. The young guys, particaully up forward lean on him being out there so heavily - that without him, they will be forced to grow their own identity on field for the second half of the year. whilst I would obviously prefer him to play out the year - that growth in being confident without the great man patrolling the forward 50 starts this week - which will be a benefit going into next year.

I have heard he has strong coaching credentials, hopefully we enlist his services ongoing.. though I thinnk a stint with the media will be on the cards.

True Legend of the game in every way.

Games are going to have something special missing from them now...Confident we can find someone to fill his shoes eventually, be it on the list or in this years draft, but just his contribution to this club...

I need a tissue.

Yeah, this one hits hard. No Brown will take a lot of getting used to. Feel like part of the soul of our club has just left today.

Love the big fella for his heart, his hardness and his ability to score a goal and carry the team over the line. He will be sorely missed.

The real interest now for me in Brown's retirement will be to see how much of a story it will be on the plethora of footy shows this evening.

It should be front and centre, but I best not assume anything when it comes to these Melbourne based programs.

I thought this was coming, the right decision for his health and wellbeing, but I don't think I've ever shed a tear before when watching a presser.

I'll miss watching the big, proud, number 16 prowling around the park but I'll always have wonderful memories to look back upon :)

All the best to Jonathan and his lovely wife and family.

360 will do a pretty epic tribute montage, I have no doubt.

I never thought the day would come... I don't think I've been this sad in a long long time :( <3 the lions king #brownysalute

I started barracking for Fitzroy because I was born and raised in its recruiting zone and while many things have changed in the ensuing 30 odd years the link has continued. The biggest contributor to that link in recent time has been No.16. It has been a pleasure to watch him progress from a twelve year old kid through to wear he is today. The guy is really larger than life and possibly the last of the true characters of the game.

Onfield that mark against Hawthorn is indelible and is the moment that will define him. I watched the game with a couple of Hawk supporters - I knew as soon as it happened we were going to be Premiers again in 2002. To see the players flood to him was an emotional thing.

The link with the threepeat has now eneded, time to move on I suppose but saying thanks just doesn't seem enough.

Lewy Taylor now continues that link.

Always loved watching him and admired how he went about football and life. Huge loss for you blokes and the game but congratulations on a brilliant career.
