It's not about possessions.
It's about linking with the midfield and playing his part.

Possessions are only the end product.

Averaging 15 touches but out of that is averaging 5 score involvements per game. Decent return on investment for the amount of touches he is getting.

Possessions are the end product of working hard and/or providing an option, 12 possessions as a midfielder against Carlton isn't good enough. Either he's not working hard enough, not getting in the right spots, or he's getting ignored on the field. Frankly its not good enough....he has a lot of work to do.

Whatever you do, don't look up Cyril's possessions stats - you may want him delisted!

LOL...you're now comparing the impact of a quick creative HFF's possessions with O'Rourke.....Yep same player same low possessions. That's a pretty desperate attempt to excuse JOR's current standing.

Nope, just an example that the disposal argument isn't the be all and end all of critiquing a player. Shiels hadn't been wracking up big possession numbers this year either (averaging 17 per game), because it hasn't been the role required of him.

he doesn't get his chance in the middle.
When he does e.g. richmond he got 8 touches and a goal in a quarter

Never said it was the be all and end all........Why when a Hawthorn player plays poorly most seem to hide behind "its the role he plays" . There is always an excuse. Can't some one just be average for once.
I just watched the game again he wasn't tagging nor was he negating, he was at plenty of stoppages he even ran forward of the ball... 12 possessions in a game of footy against Carlton is just plain not good enough, I'm not saying hes not going to improve or he's write off, but currently his output isn't sufficient to the point he won't hold his spot once Shiels Rioli and Puopolo return..
As for Shiels he is at times used as a pure run with in games, it brings his count down not to mention he has also failed to finish out games.

And our game revolves around uncontested football, we throw it around, our motto is hold onto the pill.

You said we 'share it around like no other' which is obviously incorrect - we share it around less than plenty of others....have a look at the Bulldogs efficiency with possessions.

Retaining possession and racking up possession is not the same thing.

Ridiculous.

I see him as a Pendlebury type, learning his craft in a controlled manner.

The Hawks, consistently, almost boringly, develop their players, without the pressure of being 'the man'.

He's not panicked, and Hodge/Lewis aren't ripping him... Ergo he's doing his job.
This is the best statement yet as to why he is in the side!
If he was even remotely not up to the task he would be getting a spray from these guys.
I'm sure there are ppl here that remember some comments from the pre Anderson trade that, if I remember correctly, Anderson got a massive spray from Hodge at training with a resulting " that's why he will never play for Hawthorn" ... Or something like that.
Please correct me if I'm wrong!
JOR is ticking boxes & developing.
I hope he ends up as good as Pendles! :)

When you use the number of possessions, rather than look at what he's doing in a game, you won't ever appreciate any player.
BigFooty idiots use Cyril's low possession count as evidence that he contributes little to the game.

You've been conned by the David Kings of the world!

17 games in.

17.

If we're going to harp on possessions (which we shouldn't, but its just an easy assessment for the uneducated), then consider:

Pendlebury averaged about 16 per game in his first 17 games.
Fyfe averaged about 16 per game in his first 17 games.
Judd averaged about 15 per game in his first 17 games

JOR is averaging 13. Give it time please.

LOL, you're still hiding, whats is he doing in a game that rivals Rioli's low possession count both defensively and offensively ? he sure as hell didn't get enough of the pill on the weekend....... with very little impact and defensively he had 1 tackle with zero 1%'s ?
Hiding behind Rioli as an excuse for another player is comical, there is nobody like Rioli.

And you're hiding behind a poor game against Carlton and completely ignoring the good game he had against the Tigers where he had 18 touches, 1 goal, 2 goal assists, 7 score involvements, 5 tackles and 3 clearances and a 1 percenter. Not bad for a hopeless player.

Probably best to compare JOR to Shiels.

Shiels averaged 12 disposals per game in his first 17 games. and 4 tackles
JOR is averaging 13 disposals per game and 2 tackles.

The trajectory is fine. Glad Clarko stuck with Shiels, and will stick with JOR.
