listening to SEN on the way to work they were talking about IF Jon Brown were heading back to melbourne what he would be looking for in a club. from the best of my memory these were the "boxes" that required ticking

1) Sufficient money left in salary cap
2) young playing list
3) premiership window in the next 5 years

they then went on to nominate the 3 clubs that ticked those boxes and they were as follows

Collingwood, Bulldogs and RICHMOND.

what are peoples thoughts on chasing the big guy, would it be worth throwing the whole box and dice to try and get him to punt road?

He is not worth a 10th of the salary cap as people are suggesting. We would have to give up the farm to get him so my answer would be a big NO.

Dont think the bulldogs are there... sorry, but just cant see Jonathan Brown turning up to training at the Whitten Oval. Very materialistic l know, but just doubt it.

No sure how him and Akka get on either.

Colingwood are the obvious choice... and l hope they do get him. Just something tells me that when Collingwood finally snag the recruit of the year, that the soul gets sold and it ends up going horibly wrong.

Similar to Richmond... these things usually backfire on us. Do l want him? Yeah, ____ oath. But wouldnt be prepared to send off any of the following: Lids, Cotch, Axel, Thursty. Pick 10 and Reiwoldt?

To be honest, the more l think about it, the more l'm content with where we are going by ourselves. :thumbsu:

He has a very close family connection with Richmond. Do not rule out the possibility of him joining us if he moves back south

To be honest the one that I think is slipping under the guard at the moment is Fevola. Think he might be a good suit to us, has shown interest in joining us in the past, has close ties with a number of players and would currently be available at a discounted price, with the requirement being a long term contract.

First things first, Brown wont leave Brisbane so this thread is somewhat pointless.

Secondly, going after the quick fixes has not worked for us in the past and is a waste of the previous 5 years if we were to throw everything at getting someone like Brown, sure he would be a great player to have but at what cost. Just who/what would we have to give up to get a 27 year old when we probably don't really need him.

Riewoldt and pick 10 for Brown?? Sold!! Are you kidding!
No way do I want Collingwood getting him. You think the hype and publicity surrounding Judd and Carlton was painful? I'd have to shoot Eddie.
RT - we don't need the best, toughest, most courageous and inspiring player in the game?! Please change your moniker to Deluded Tiger!
We get Brown, our window opens, provided we don't have to give too much. Using the Judd deal as a guide, if he does decide to leave and nominates us as his preferred club (I can see it, he probably hates Collingwood and the Bears are certainly not too well disposed towards the Pies), we'd probably have to give up our first two picks and a player. Picks 6 and 24, plus Riewoldt, McGuane, Polak, or Pettifer. Ditto with Blues and Fev.
We'd be mad not to give it good hard thought. J Brown prowling the 50 at the G in yellow and black would make us a threat.

What's the family connection??
His mother Mary is a sister of Noel Mugavin who transferred to Richmond from Fitzroy in 1982. Only played 2 games for us after suffering severe spleen injury. Missed 1982 Grand Final against Carlton but helped us get revenge over Blues in exhibition match replay at Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.

The Grand Final between Richmond and Carlton is replayed at the Gabba as an official demonstration sport of the XII Commonwealth Games. The ground is a sell out and patrons see Richmond reverse the tables, defeating the Blues by 18 points. Richmond 28.16 (184) d. Carlton 26.10 (166)

Just trying to follow this...
So JB's uncle played 2 games for us in 1982?
Not sure that is a "very close" family conection but hey, if that makes Brown want to be a Tiger they great! Might lower his asking price then. :D

It's in his blood :D

Noel would have been a very good player for us if not for the spleen injury. Jono may see it as unfinished family business to join the Tigers ;)

Offer them JON.

Seriously, he's 27 years old and we won't be playing in a grand final for the next 3 to 4 years i reckon. We have a great bunch of young kids and I'd be really disappointed to lose young riewoldt. No thanks.

I think the bulldogs can be ruled out too. He hates ackermanis with a passion.

If you think that the Lions would let a triple premiership/Coleman medal winner walk for what you're offering then perhaps you should ask for the moniker "Deluded Tiger".

The Eagles only took the Judd offer because they were resigned to losing him for nothing if they didn't, because Judd had already declared he was leaving. Brown wants to stay at the Lions and all this talk about him possibly leaving is utter BS.

To get Brown out of there would take something more along the lines of at least 2 first round picks plus either a second round pick or player or one first round pick and a player of equal value, which would mean us giving up Deledio/Foley to get him, plus the second round pick or player as well. That being the case would you still be all for throwing everything at getting Brown to Richmond if it meant giving up that much.

That is why I said we don't really need him, because it just costs too much to get him and would pour all of the hard work done over the previous 4 years down the crapper. You don't build a strong young list over a preiod of time and then piss it all away for a 27 year old with a history of suffering long term injuries regardless how great they are.

Who says we have a strong list???
Question marks over:
Raines
Polak
Riewoldt
McMahon
Polo
Pettifer
McGuane
Rance
Putt
Morton
Tuck
Meyer
Jackson
Coughlan
Pattison
JON
Tambling
Hyde
Tivendale
Gourdis
Hughes
White
Casserley
Connors
Collins
King

And anyway, I didn't say we should trade away our heart and soul, I said we should look at it. No matter how promising we think our youngsters are, the facts are that of our top 6 players, only Lids and Foley are under 30. My point was that getting Brown would open the window while Richo, N Brown, Simmo and Johnson are still playing.
But I'm with Cogga - let's get Fev and Kerr for bugger all and win the next three flags!

Our instinct for picking up is about as foolproof as Ronaldo's....!??

those in bold are keepers.
underlined i would be patient with...even meyer, the kid has smarts lets make sure we exhaust all possiblilties in getting him right.
Hughes? although dissapointing, i would still think patience is required with this dude.

bottom line, our midfiled will have had another year of development. Add to that the Cotch's sublime skill, with a kerr busting packs and delivering laser beams to our forwards? Put Fev in the seat, Browny mopping up anything that needs to be, Eddo doing party tricks...and with our BL and of course the big fella doing eveything else, including kicking goals...we would kick major butt...

for the nuff nuffs that go gaga at getting tried players, listen up. There is a difference between Fev & Kerr, and Hudosn, Hoolahoop, Blumfield and co. If you dont see that then you have No..Fuc-king...Idea;)

ps. good to see McMahon in you list :D

I'm not saying that we should get rid of everyone on my list, or that they're no good, just that they haven't proved themselves yet. I agree with most of your keepers/be patients Cogga, although I'm less bullish on McGuane and more inclined to give Cogs and JON another chance. Jacko too.

JON....still to decide...understand where those that want him gone are coming from, but i dont form opinions on players until they are put to the test in the big time, unless they show extreme skill- Connors, in the ressies.
On Cogs, heres hoping he can get back.
McGuane? one of his biggest critics when he first played in the 1s. But has won me over. I like the kid, he instills fear, with the way he attacks the contest, and has taken a leaf out of the Thursty book of errorless defensive footy - dont do what you think you can, just do what you know you can. i.e get it to those that you know can, the way you know you can. ;)

Ever since he got stuck into Bazza against the Swans last year I have been a Mcguan fan:thumbsu: Has a crack this kid and has some pure talent too

re the bold bit. it's a good way to start you career especially as a backman and with hard work and confidence, more strings get added to the bow, until you start to become a playmaker as well as a play stopper.

exactly. Errors in the backline cost the team double, i.e they put a stop to a forward thrust, i.e scoring chance, and they can end up with a score against.
Errors in the forward line dont, because you can still repel with your BL.
Raines take note..;)
