Simpkin is 181cm and 76kg. He was elevated onto the Swans list in '06 but was subsequently delisted a few weeks ago. He didn't play a senior game for the club but I did see him play a few games. He's a hard in and under type midfielder, similar to a Jared Moore or even an Amon Buchanan. He isn't overly quick but his disposal is quite good. We have to many player's similar to him and the arrival of Craig Bird really didn't help him.

He would be a useful player for any team. He certainly would add depth to the midfield but that's about it. I hope he gets another opportunity.

Don't agree with much of that assessment. I'd describe him as pretty pacy - one of the quickest mids in the Swans' reserves last year. And while he's "inside" in the sense of working quite well through traffic, I never thought of him as one of those guys burrowing into the packs to extract the ball. If anything, he struck me as a touch on the soft side.

Kicking has decent penetration but he wastes far too many with poor direction. Not - at this stage - a reliable decision maker and a bit of a glory seeker (ie taking long pot shots at goal rather than looking to set up someone in a better position). Looks super at times because he has some tricks but (another comment on his decision making) he doesn't always appreciate his limitations or the lack of time/space he has.

Definitely has the raw skills to be quite an exciting player but needs to become far more disciplined in his decision making if he's going to graduate to senior football.

Pretty good assessment Liz. Simpkin is a terrific ball runner, sells sublime dummies regularly, but apart from that there is not much. Decision making suspect, diposal erratic (from memory he kicked 0-7 in one game this year) and intensity when he hasn't got the ball suspect. In another year he may have got a reprieve, but with Barlow, Jack and co banging down the door there was no room left. His ball running skills may earn him a run with another team, but there is plenty of work to be done on all the other areas of his game.

I have only seen him play twice. So obviously I wouldn't be in the best position to make a call on him. But that's what I got out of seeing him play. Up here in Melbourne we don't get to see the reserves play at all which is frustrating.
