North Melbourne make $5m offer for Jordan De Goey

North Melbourne have made an aggressive $5 million offer for Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey.

The starting offer is for $1 million a year for five years for the young out-of-contract Pies star.

St Kilda have also made an offer close to North’s position.

Collingwood have opened negotiations with De Goey’s manager Ben Niall after both parties agreed at the start of the year to put off talks until the middle of the season, following another suspension for De Goey for an off-field indiscretion.

Since then De Goey has significantly turned his football career around and has this year become one of the rising stars of the competition.

The question now has moved from whether Collingwood wanted to keep him to how much they will have to pay to keep him.

The trend for several years in football has been for players, outside of those moving home from interstate, to stay at clubs for significantly less money.

The Magpies would be expected to have to pay in the vicinity of $750,000 to $850,000 to keep De Goey.

It is unknown if the player favours a long- or short-term deal. When Josh Kelly stayed at GWS he did so for a two-year deal.

Dustin Martin is the most recent and obvious big name player to stay at a club for less money than he would have earned elsewhere, when he chose to remain at Richmond instead of moving to North Melbourne.

Martin and Kelly were the latest players to pass on big money offers to join the Roos.

The Age this week revealed that the Roos had employed veteran football manager and deal-maker Graeme Allan as a consultant to help them land a big name trade. Allan was briefly at Collingwood and would have a reasonable knowledge of their salary cap position.

Ollie Wines recently re-signed with Port Adelaide on significantly less money than he would have earned had he decided to move back to Victoria.

Really wish these offers weren't public knowledge. Obviously the work of the player manager but makes us look like nuffies when players knock back our godfather offers. Noting that not many players leave and we have been close to a few but just look desperate when it comes being plastered all over the internet.

It's a s**t hot offer

Gives them something to think about

Gives him something to think about

Lets everyone know we are not sitting on our ******* hands waiting for things to fall out

We are shaking the tree violently

Dustin Martin is the most recent and obvious big name player to stay at a club for slightly less money, a Puma contract and prob'ly some cash funneled via his family and media arrangements than he would have earned elsewhere, when he chose to remain at Richmond instead of moving to North Melbourne.

Efa.

They will find a way to keep him. As we found out last year money doesn't mean everything.
we didnt get dusty last year because as there pres said ... we are thankful to puma for finding extra money to keep martin - so in the end the money was close.. kelly on the other hand has time on his side so whether it was this year or next he will be at North melb

still need to satisfy pies.. or risk going in draft.. which could work if we put a price on his head no one else can afford.

But given saints have space, they'd have first dibs.

Also, very rarely does it get to a point where a trade cant be negotiated.
agreed but in this situation we hold the upper hand over everyone if he chooses to come to us
