It's because AFL house realised that Collingwood were doing the dodgy with Beams. They were paying him close to a minimum wage, in exchange for Eddie paying off his gambling debts. AFL got wind of it, and are allowing Collingwood to self manage their way out of this mess- but I can say with certainty, Eddie will not be President come round one. Beams "leaving", the fire sale and Geoff Walsh's "retirement" are the domino's to fall so far, and there will be more to come.
Called it.

De Goey is contracted until the end of 2022, at which point he will become a free agent.

Should Collingwood consider trading him early?

The answer depends on where you see Collingwood's list. Are they in a position to contend in the next 2-3 years? Or are they destined to slip back and have a little reset without necessarily bottoming out and rebuilding?

Consider this:

1) They probably need to acquire some more draft picks.
2) What will it cost them to re-sign De Goey as a free agent at the end of 2022? Is he ultimately going to justify that kind of money, let's say $4 million over five years?
3) If he ends up leaving as a FA they'll get a single first-rounder. Wouldn't Collingwood be better off trading him out 12 months earlier for perhaps two first-rounders?

I'm not sure of the answer here. Are they close enough that retaining a player like De Goey for $4 million over 5 years is a no-brainer? Or would they be better off banking a couple of early picks and moving him on?

It's a bit of a Rorschach test of where you see Collingwood's list.

No club is touching De Goey. He's a bog average footballer, who could be in prison in the next year or two. The fact that Collingwood hedged their bets with this scumbag over Treloar is hilarious, kinda sad but incredibly unsurprising.
