As an AFL with priors it wasn’t a good look, as a 26 yo he did nothing wrong at all

I think he was in the wrong for obvious reasons but I’m now more concern of the bulling he is getting from all the righteous do gooders in the media - some should be ashamed

Hopefully back the following week and this gets sorted one way or another at the end of the year

Just watched Jordan kick a bomb from 50 plus metres v hawthorn to get us back within a kick.

I write to let you know how deeply disappointed I am with the Club’s handling of the media frenzy surrounding Jordan de Goey.
While I accept that there was a need to respond to concerns about the Bali footage, the response has been sorely lacking in effectiveness.
You have allowed him to be bullied (hunted, actually) by an unrelenting media pack. You have stood by while he is demonised and pilloried on social media. You have not defended him as a person and you have not called out the inaccuracies and hyperbole used by media and others against him. You have not called for restraint or fairness or perspective. He needed and deserved that much from you, and you have not provided it.
As a result we have a bruised and perhaps damaged young man who has been let down by his club and now doesn’t feel able to play. “Side By Side” - what a hollow promise that seems to be at the moment.
You do not appear to have a viable strategy for dealing with a media storm and restoring any sort of equilibrium. (Do you get advice in this area? If so, do you listen to it?)
You appear to be guided by a principle of appeasement, whereby you reason that any sort of pushback will make the situation worse. You appear to believe that this is somehow protecting the reputation of the Club. It isn’t. This is amateurish and timid. Over 50 years working in media and public relations I have learned that this approach is morally wrong and counterproductive — it leads to more and bigger problems. In fact there are ways to push back professionally and effectively; and, frankly, as an organisation of substance you should be on top of that requirement.
I really do not want to let my membership lapse. I only hope that you can find a way to pull this situation back together and demonstrate that “Side By Side” means what it says before I have to make that decision later this year.

I actually think that the club siding with the ridiculous front page about Ginnivan and IQ was infinitely worse. There was some grey with the Jordy one and it was thus a really difficult call, but the other one was white and they essentially supported the slanderous insinuations about misogyny and degradation of women because the two joined millions of all genders in an online discussion about habits and traits that increase or reduce attraction for them.

I’ve heard that if either of the Brown Brothers replace JDG this week…they may consider a ‘player protest’ over JDG treatment & refuse to go near the ball or have an impact on the game.

I don’t disagree with you. I just focused on the de Goey issue because of the obvious impact on him and the fact it lays bare the club’s failings in handling this sort of situation.

I agree. I'm not sure who reported it first in the media but i think they should take responsibility for it. The club might have told the two to apologise just to kill the issue...

I know this is not about this issue but i read a headline yesterday about a great american swimmer being a code cheat. The implications are obvious. When I clicked the story I found out that a wet-nosed kiddie writing for the news.com had been a smart-arse and rolled that phrase out. Maybe it was his sub-editor, I dont know.

EIther way, the site played around with a swimmer's reputation so casually that it inferred that it didnt matter.

The two young pie players have been smeared with this for the rest of their lives...because the media person who started the pile-on couldnt spare the time to find out the facts.

It's one thing to expect perfection from AFL players because they are role models, but media people should realise that they also have responsibilities. They call themselves journalists. The truth is that they are gossip writers, writing about things that really dont matter, except for the people that they can hurt.

Wut? He is one of the few 'match winners' we have. We should be very worried.

He knew he would bring bad press to the club and went ahead and did it.

A depressingly high number of people here were very quick to hang Eddie. Perhaps a majority even.
