Deefolt - Geelong had pick 17 and took Daniel Menzel who is a nice back flank/midfielder but certainly wasn't rated through the rough in terms of talk and media exposure. Whilst we will never know, them having interest in Gysberts sounds practical.

Barry on SEN, just said he's like a Grimes or Trengove in that there is nothing overly special about him but he's just a good player. Describes him similarly to Geelong midfielders - probably like a Joel Corey the most.

A 'parts make the whole' type of midfielder.

I like the fact that he is a smooth mover with clean skills, rarely makes a mistake and most importantly, seems to have a knack for bringing his teammates into the game.

The more I think about this selection, and the way in which he could fit into our side, the happier I become.

You two do realise that the MFC recruiters would have a far greater idea of the talents of these kids than those who produce phantom drafts on BF and the media?

Of course I understand this concept. It would be very interesting to see why the Melbourne recruiters rated Gysberts higher than Lucas/Bastinac/Stevens/Tapscott (yes I know you secured him with pick 18).

Recruiters also rate players differently as well (Obviously), personally I just think Gysberts was a slight reach. As I posted somewhere else, if your draft selections were Scully, Trengove, Tapscott, Gawn, Gysberts and Fitzpatrick, nobody would have questioned your selections. Were a player is picked sometimes overides the sum of all the parts.

Everyone will be proved right or wrong in years to come, that is half the run with regards to being a recruitment manager.

there was only a breathe between Gysbert and Lucas. They took Gysbert cause they felt he was the better kick and decision maker.

I personally like Bastinac but Gysbert was more the bigger midfielder we wanted who can crash through and handball off to runners but also have the ability to run outside himself.

Stevens. Don't know.

Tapscott. Gysbert the more accomplished full time mid.

I didn't write him off, I was talking purely about the type of player he is (inside midfielder) compared to what we need (key position forward). It is obvious we need a key position forward and with this selection we have put all our eggs in the Miller basket and I don't like it.

we are not putting our eggs in the miller basket. Miller has 1-2 years left on the list and will be gone. Watts will be a star, Jurrahs marking ability means he is a KPF and with mid sized guys like Sylvia, Bate and co that can take a mark our forward line is set up for the next few years. Fitzpatrick would be a forward more than a ruckman i would think and at pick 50 may not be anything but could potentially become a good KPF

Just because he wasn't hyped to the same extent as some of the other players doesn't mean he is a lesser player.

On Gysberts, I was surprised with the selection, but it looks like our recruiters were going for best available rather than needs. From a personal perspective, I think he has a bit of Dal Santo about him personally, just in the way he moves, although I don't know if everyone will share that opinion.

Time will tell as to how he ends up, but I'm certainly prepared to back the recruiters for now.

I dont know about that...

I have supreme confidence in our recruiting department. I remember a couple of years ago I was filthy we got Frawley. How wrong that initial disgust turned out to be. We have picked up some gems in recent years around the 11-20 mark. Nobody said a word about Blease & Strauss & neither of them have played a game!
Just because we felt (myself included) we needed another tall doesn't mean this kid is no good. Give him a chance. He's pretty skinny from what I've seen & a bit raw so won't have the impact I'd expect from Scully & Trengrove & even Tapscott next year but I have faith in BP.
He knows this draft will be another launching pad to greatness for the Melbourne Footy Club & I highly doubt he used our pick 11 on a speculative kid.
Even though it appears our KPF stocks are pretty slim. We have Watts 195cm, Jurrah 191cm, Morton 190cm (and plenty of meat to put on) Fitzpatrick 200cm. Still enough height there & a dominant midfield is the key to premiership success.
Imagine a midfield rotation of Scully, Trengrove, Davey, Sylvia, Moloney, Blease, Strauss, Jones, Tapscott, Gysberts & Grimes!
The future looks bright & if we desperately need a KPF in a few years (ala Bulldogs) those players will have brilliant currency to trade one in.

Great call cannons.

Yes I thought we'de go tall but I have alot of faith in BP - weve made some great recruiting decisions in recent years so he deserves our backing on this one.

On Gysberts, I actually had him at pick 14 in my phantom draft so not as surprised as some that he went so high. More for the 'needs' aspect that I didnt expect it.

I can see what BP (and cannons) likes about him. He very rarely fumbles the ball and is a brilliant decision maker. Has heaps of time with the ball and doesnt seem to get flustered in traffic - this guy stays very calm. Id put this guy in the bank before Talia and definately before Black - BP obviously wasnt prepared to take a risk with such an early pick and clearly went for who he thought was best available.

He doesnt really run the lines, but he is just smart with the footy and gets alot of the unoticed but important posessions. Im sure we've got a footballer here. :thumbsu:

Add Dunn into that equation as well - hopefully he gets sufficient opportunity to prove himself up forward next year.
