What a load of crap, this could have been easily decided at the time free agency was put in place.

Great with Lewis signing on though.

Great news.

I was concerned he'd also want to drag it out for the year to try secure a better deal for himself.

He'll be our next captain IMO.

As for the other stuff, well, the compensation 'system' last year was a complete farce, so I'm not surprised they've scrapped it. However, if Buddy leaves as a free agent and we get nothing for him it's a disgrace.

If he wants to go come October, we'll have to find a way to match the offer and then trade him. Not sure if it's a simple as that though. It could be a bit messy although we've got a long time to prepare for it.

Hodge & Mitchell could hold off. There is no chance of them leaving.

It just shows how loyal Jordy is to the club, and I reckon he would have probably taken a pay cut as well.
In another article in the Sun it said Lewis could have signed a $700,000 contract with another club, given his leadership skills and the way he plays. Happy he will be staying in his number guernsey for 2013 and beyond!

AFL finds another way to screw us (asuming franklin leaves)

ideally, compensation should be awarded on a player for player basis, not overall

in other words, if you lose 2 players but pick up 1 in free agency, you get 1 pick, which should be awarded based on ladder position, at the end of the 2nd round

Its a pretty simple equation now....we do everything possible to match the Franklin offer, if he still wants to go......its through a trade!
We cannot allow him to go for nothing!

Great news about Lewis signing on and showing true loyalty to the club.... But the club still finds themselves in a nightmare position with their three highest paid players, Hodge, Franklin and Sam Mitchell, all coming out of contract at the end of the season....

I just hope Mitchell gets his wish now and the club signs him soon!!

How can we have a fair and honest free agent market when you have clubs playing on different playing fields with the allawances they have. The Afl should compensate fairly should a player leave a club until the competion has equal salary caps. AFL was not ready for free agency due to the expansion of the league and should of waited at least another 3 years.

Anyways great to see Lewis commit to our great club.

You'd think they'd fix this in their other article about this years free agents:

EXPOSURE: Danger signs for Hawthorn, which not only has its best player out of contract, but arguably four of its best six players as free agents. Hodge and Mitchell will stay, but Jordan Lewis is out too. Someone would offer him $700K plus to move given his leadership and grunt. Roughead is out next year, as is Cyril Rioli. Birchall and Sewell are out in 2015.

Great stuff Lewie. He has been the household favourite since Changa's departure. There isn't a better option for that Number 3 jumper. Hope you have a huge year (and future years) ahead mate.

On an aside, could this be seen as positive news for re-signing Buddy? He and Lewie seem very close.

Good stuff Lewie.Loyal warrior who some others could learn from.

The more i hear about Buddy the more it aggravates me,and the season hasn't even started. If he wanted to go he should have asked for a trade last year,so do the right thing big boy

Agreed except the pick should not be tied to ladder position. If we lose Buddy this year and finish on top we would get pick 19. If Port finish last and lose, for example, Boak, they would get pick 2 in addition to pick 1. just seems to big a discrepancy considering the talent gulf between the players. I'd rather everyone get nothing than have a system that is going to deliver rivers of top ten draft picks to poor performing clubs. It is just another way of 'tanking' by moving on highly paid 27 year olds for top 5/10 draft picks they would never get in an open market.
