The past couple of seasons he's really improved and mellowed out
He no longer has that aura of arrogance about him, and is probably collingwoods best "team" player (perhaps with the exception of pendlebury)

Would have him at hawthorn in a heartbeat
I've certainly noticed a distinct lack of him in the media after he shaved his head. Could also be due to him being out with injury. Certainly one we should at least look at if Buddy does leave.

This ^^ In fact even if buddy stays I'd clean out some deadwood in the cap to have a crack at him...

I liked it how he kind of gave Buddy a tiny little slap when he said Buddy was paid enough to kick goals and he should be kicking more...

Thomas, Sylvia, LeCras are the only relatively young free agents, 26-28(as young as you can get from free agency) that would suite us best.
I don't see LeCras leaving Western Australia.
Sylvia could come over to us cheaply in search for some glory, but even then not sure we'd want him as he's very inconsistent. (I still remember the day when he kicked 4 against us and racked up 37 possies).
Thomas is the one we'd go for if Bud don't sign.

Great news.

I was concerned he'd also want to drag it out for the year to try secure a better deal for himself.

He'll be our next captain IMO.

As for the other stuff, well, the compensation 'system' last year was a complete farce, so I'm not surprised they've scrapped it. However, if Buddy leaves as a free agent and we get nothing for him it's a disgrace.

If he wants to go come October, we'll have to find a way to match the offer and then trade him. Not sure if it's a simple as that though. It could be a bit messy although we've got a long time to prepare for it.
We only have a season to prepare for it, but the media frenzy is here now. Hope the squad is prepared for that bulldust. Thanks Bud.

I must say though, if the hawks hadnt snared the 2008 flag, this would suck bigtime. Just about to get the big one and the raiders come !!!
Yes but you have to deal with that anyway. Its Franklin or his manager that are hunting or raiding as you well put it.
I haven't changed my mind though, from before, be a Hawk Buddy or go to Box Hill you are too good a player for us to stuff around with as the media will let us know all year, lets learn to play without him and still win a flag unless he signs and commits like he should.
Either way "I'm staying" "I'm leaving" , this week would be good to tell the club and the members, then go with our blessing at the end of this year, at least we know.
Also go to WCE or Freo then we'll know you were really homesick.

What's the real story on Luke Hodge . Does anybody know or are we facing the Trent Croad situation again?
Not sure why you would suggest that. He has been training and reportedly is in good shape. Given he has been restricted for two seasons we need to build his fitness up so he can have an impact. He will need match time befoe he plays seniors so expect that to be for Box Hill. I'm sure he won't be far away from the seniors.

out of the remaining free agents we really need mitch,Hodge and Guerra (and Greedy of course) but the rest are expendable you would think.Bailey and Ellis continue to show little and Ossie is a bit of a wildcard.

I'm actually thinking it could be good to see Buddy go elsewhere, every one else commits their loyalty while bud needs a better deal to stay.We would still have a good core group(getting old though) so we could use his coin to grab a couple of younger gws or gold coast kids who want to come home.

I like the idea of free agency if it's a vessel for players to chase on field success but not to play it out for more coin.

"I think as you get older, it's been proven in the past that you're going to have to go lower so that the younger blokes coming through can get paid probably a little bit more than what they deserve," Hodge said.

Yet another little back handed comment obviously directed towards Buddy by the leaders of the club.
I think they all accept that he's worth the biggest contract but I think they're also a bit frustrated that they're all taking a bit of a pay cut to accomodate him but he still hasn't signed. It might not even be a money issue for these guys, they probably just don't want the media circus getting in the way while we're trying to get that elusive flag.

My reading of the article was that the money available from any paycut to Hodge wouldn't go to Buddy, ( who is obviously established), but rather to the younger guys coming through, who are putting in and showing potential but who haven't actually delivered consistently just yet.

I think that players like Breust, Hill, Smith and that ilk will be looking for more in their next contracts, and that was what Hodge was suggesting. We have probably offered Buddy just about as much as we can, and need to look nafter our next generation players.
