Well-drilled Hawks have stepped up

Hodge, unsurprisingly, enjoyed the conditions, in which his strength, skill and play-reading abilities shone. Brad Sewell and Jordan Lewis, too, thrived in the scrimmages, while Shaun Burgoyne provided the polish to support the grunt of Lewis and Sewell.

Influential players
In addition to Franklin, Hodge and Gibson, Jordan Lewis was also a key figure for the Hawks. The onballer was promoted to the vice-captaincy just prior to the season and he led from the front with a game-high 32 possessions

Franklin magic helps Hawks fly over Eagles

A neat 90-second cameo from Hawthorn midfielder Cyril Rioli in the second quarter to set up goals for Jarryd Roughead and Jordan Lewis proved the difference.

What has happened to the Jordan Lewis of a few years back?

Between 07 and 09 Jordan looked like he was going to be one of the AFL's most prolific ball-winners across his career, last year and (particularly) this year he seems to have dropped off significantly, this year he's contributed >20 touches once in 5 matches (although from memory he was the sub in one match and was in fine form when he came on).

This isn't a troll by the way, I rate the guy highly and have followed him as a player since junior footy, he just doesn't look anywhere near the player he was between 07 and 09. Is there something holding him back?

Played more of a forward role against Geelong. Wasted there imo.

A stack of press for Jordan this week.

Here's a couple of articles...

Hawks confident of pressuring top two
Guy Hand

As pundits queue up to label Collingwood and Geelong certain AFL grand finalists on early season form, Hawthorn say they are capable of matching the competition's best.

The Hawks' gutsy 30-point win over 2009 and 2010 grand finalists St Kilda at the weekend showcased their tenacity and courage.

Now they have crept with stealth to a 5-2 win-loss record, and with much less fuss than others at the ladder's pointy end.

The manner of the St Kilda win - achieved two players down after defender Stephen Gilham and ruck David Hale injured their knees early in the match - suggests they are serious threats to the Cats and Magpies.

And their players believe that with natural improvement, the slow-burning Hawks can put a fire under the top two.

"We know when we play our best football we can match it with those sides," midfielder Jordan Lewis said on Monday.

"We're just concentrating on ourselves at the moment. We've got a little bit of improvement to do, and I think we saw a little bit of that on the weekend.

"Hopefully we can keep improving."

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has admitted to a Collingwood-like rotation of young players through the side to emulate the Magpies' 2010 heroics.

First and second-year players Jarryd Blair, Steele Sidebottom and Dayne Beams became premiership players as a result of Mick Malthouse's tinkering and uncanny knack of knowing the right time to blood youth.

Lewis believes the strategic injection of youth is livening up the Hawks.

"Not only do the young guys come in and contribute, they bring a great energy to the side," Lewis said.

Hawthorn suffer in slaying of St Kilda
Stephen Rielly From: The Australian May 16, 2011 12:00AM

Admittedly the opportunities were drying up by the last minutes of the first term, but the St Kilda skipper didn't add to his tally. With Brad Sewell, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Matt Suckling owning the midfield it was Hodge's best game for the season chances started to emerge at the other end of the ground like weeds. The inside-50 count, at 59 to 30, ran at almost 2-1 in Hawthorn's favour.

Consistency the difference: Lewis

By Mark Macgugan
4:56 PM Mon 16 May, 2011

HAWTHORN midfielder Jordan Lewis believes yesterday's 30-point win over St Kilda could turn out to be a season-defining victory.

The Hawks went goalless to quarter-time as their opponents skipped out to a 32-point lead, but responded strongly to play some of their best football of the year for the remainder of the match.

"It's definitely one of our best wins for the season," Lewis said from Waverley Park on Monday afternoon.

"I think our last three quarters were probably the most consistent quarters that we've had all year."

The Hawks' slow start prompted a typically frank assessment from club president Jeff Kennett on the club's website.

"Yesterday I witnessed perhaps the worst quarter of football of the last five years, and then three quarters which, as they unfolded, filled me with great pride," Kennett wrote on Monday morning.

Lewis didn't share his president's views on his team's first quarter effort.

"It certainly didn't feel [that bad] out on the field," he responded.

"We felt like we were in control of the football, but they got a couple of easy goals out the back from our mistakes."

While player and president disagreed as to the extent of Hawthorn's first quarter woes, the Hawks' domination after the first change of ends was unquestioned.

They kicked 14 goals to St Kilda's five, went inside attacking 50 48 times to 17, and won the contested possession count 111-86.

Most telling of all was the centre clearance figure.

The Hawks' midfielders drove the ball forward from centre bounces 14 times to St Kilda's two after quarter-time (18-3 for the match), with Lewis, Luke Hodge, Brad Sewell, Liam Shiels and Sam Mitchell all winning multiple centre clearances.

The centre clearance dominance was all the more impressive given key forwards Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin were forced to shoulder the load in the ruck after the team's sole selected tap specialist, David Hale, went down with a knee injury in the second quarter.

Lewis said there was no great catalyst for the turnaround, just a focus on doing the basics right.

"We just came in at [quarter-time] and thought that we had to do the simple things well, and we knew our big guys went down so we had to run a lot more. We did that in the last three quarters, and it helped us win the game," he said.

Even more pleasing for Hawthorn was the significant contribution from several younger players, who justified Clarkson's decision to leave out 2008 premiership stars Xavier Ellis and Clinton Young.

Round 9

Sydney Swans 4.1 4.4 6.8 8.12 (60)
Hawthorn 3.2 4.8 11.14 15.16 (106)

Lewis 9 kicks, 17 handballs, 4 clearences @ 62%

Magic moment
Having failed to take advantage of their dominance in the second term, Hawthorn kicked three straight early in the second half before producing the play of the game. It started with Jarryd Roughead winning the tap to Luke Hodge. A series of neat handpasses between Hodge, Shaun Burgoyne and Jordan Lewis ended up with the ball in Hodge’s hands as he charged into the forward 50m. He kicked truly on the run as the Hawks opened up a 28-point lead.

Round 10

Western Bulldogs 2.3 3.5 6.6 9.8 (62)
Hawthorn 5.3 8.7 10.11 13.13 (91)

Lewis - 15 kicks, 10 handballs, 11 hitouts(!) @ 88%

Hawthorn won the hit-outs 42-29, with Bailey getting assistance from an unlikely source in the 186cm Jordan Lewis, who was effectively deployed as a third man up at many ball-ups and finished with 11 hitouts.

Jordan currently leads the league in score assists with 27.

His efforts in negating the dangerous Mundy were pivotal in Hawthorn clinching victory VS Fremantle.

He was one of a number of senior players who lifted in the last quarter.

Largely ignored by the press, this was one of his most important games for the club this year.

Hawthorn 3.4 6.5 9.8 17.9 (111)

Fremantle 3.1 8.4 12.8 13.11 (89)

Eight of the best cures coach's hangover
Martin Blake
June 6, 2011

TWENTY-SIX points down early in the final quarter against Fremantle at the MCG yesterday, Hawthorn stared into the abyss. Coach Al Clarkson was feeling ''like I've got a hangover'', and pondering the absence of Lance Franklin, the Hawks' most prolific matchwinner.
The response says a lot about Hawthorn, which suddenly found a new vigour and poise. Eight consecutive goals, inspired by the likes of captain Luke Hodge, super-substitute Luke Breust and Brendan Whitecross, gave Clarkson's team a 22-point win and prepared it to take on unbeaten Geelong.

It was a Collingwood-esque burst, with Clarkson acknowledging that the Hawks had controlled the game for just 30 minutes. For the previous 90, Fremantle had been the dominant side, capitalising on the absence of Franklin, whose calf muscle injury put a halt to his string of brilliant performances, and upon Hawthorn's slipshod disposal in the flukey winds.
''We didn't play our best footy but we were still in the game,'' said midfielder Sam Mitchell, arguably best-afield with 31 disposals and another who delivered a pivotal goal in the final quarter. ''We were disappointed with the way we worked in the first three quarters. At three-quarter time we looked and went a bit smaller in the front half. We tried to get a few more running-type goals and we were fortunate in the last quarter we got out the back a couple of times and got some easier goals.''

Instead of having Franklin as the beacon up forward Hawthorn had first-gamer Jordan Lisle, who showed good signs in attracting the football but whose nerves got the better of him. By the time he had missed two relatively easy set shots and he stared down a third, from 25 metres out and straight in front in the second quarter, Lisle could only manage a golfer's ''shank'' that slewed out of bounds. Football being a pitiless game, the Fremantle players were quickly there to remind him.

''I suppose the thing you say to him is 'at least you're getting it champ','' said Clarkson. ''He looked OK, he just looked terrible when he's lining up. But he'll stick at it. He's a good lad. He's waited a long time for his chance. I think he's been an emergency 12 times until he got his chance when ''Buddy'' was a late withdrawal.''

The Hawks also posted Hodge up forward and for three quarters he was controlled by Ryan Crowley. That Hodge was able to rip the game away from the Dockers by moving into the middle in the final quarter encapsulates what he means to Hawthorn. One drilled goal from the boundary was vintage; Clarkson called the last quarter an ''avalanche'' and it was an appropriate sentiment.

Shaun Burgoyne's running goal from a centre clearance after he barged through a pack also had the crowd going. Fremantle ruckman Jonathon Griffin had been superb, but now he was tired. Hodge and Burgoyne and Brad Sewell and Jordan Lewis stepped up at the stoppages and Mitchell was relentless with his nose over the footy.

Jordan Lewis thriving in Hawthorn leadership
Herald Sun June 23, 2011

JORDAN Lewis admits it's taking a while to get used to hearing himself referred to as the Hawthorn vice-captain.

"It's a funny thing," Lewis said this week. "If I was looking at someone else and saying they're vice-captain at 25, you'd think, 'Gee that's a really young age', but when it's yourself, and you see the maturity in yourself, it doesn't feel like a big thing."

Lewis and his good mate, Jarryd Roughead, were the surprise choices to serve under newly appointed captain Luke Hodge this year.

"Roughy's actually 24, so he's even younger but in saying that we've been around the game for seven years so you learn a hell of a lot from the likes of Hodgey and Mitch (former captain Sam Mitchell)," he said.

"Everyone is different, everyone matures at different rates . . . I think growing up I've always been that mature person when it comes to football and leadership.

Hawthorn's Jordan Lewis banned for two matches at tribunal

Herald Sun June 28, 2011

754685-jordan-lewis.jpg

INJURY-stricken Hawthorn lurched from bad to worse when it lost in-form midfielder Jordan Lewis for the next two matches.

The Hawks' dwindling player reserves are further eroded after Lewis gambled and lost at the AFL Tribunal with a challenge to a headbutt charge.

Lewis, who had 29 possessions, two goals and three scoring assists in last Friday night's win against Essendon, will miss Sunday's game against Collingwood and the following round against the Brisbane Lions.

A bye after the Lions game means the tough midfielder won't play for three weeks, returning in Round 18. "I didn't think there was a lot in it. Unfortunately, I won't be out there for the next couple of weeks, but we move on," Lewis said after the hearing.

Lewis, who rejected the match review panel's offer of a one-game ban, fought the misconduct charge on the basis that his contact to Essendon forward Angus Monfries' head was not sufficient impact to be a reportable offence.

I took a dive: Essendon forward Angus Monfries

Jay Clark From: Herald Sun July 14, 2011 9:25AM 54

ANGUS Monfries won't be sanctioned for admitting he took a dive in the Jordan Lewis headbutt incident.
The AFL today confirmed no action would be taken against the Bomber despite trying to crackdown on such behaviour.

The match review panel’s finding will also remain unchanged, satisfied that Lewis made contact to Monfries’ head."

Monfries just admitted what everyone except the MRP knew - that there was nothing in the incident which saw Lewis suspended for two weeks.

Mind you, he comes out AFTER Lewis had served his 2 weeks.

The name that is most often forgotten from the great Hawthorn scoop of the 2004 draft is Jordan Lewis. Elevated to vice captain in 2011 the club was rewarding Jordan for the leadership and courage he had shown in previous seasons. His reputation is one of being hard at the footy, and at the man – but the suspensions and 50m penalties that marred his burgeoning career in the first few seasons have all but subsided.

Of the 24 hawthorn games played in 2011, Jordan played 22, missing the final round of the H&A season on account of the hawks preparing the squad for the finals, and also missing a match through suspension with a little bit of theatre delivered by, and admitted by Angus Monfries.

This was an important season for Jordan Lewis. He took his game to a new level in a variety of roles. Early in the season, when teams were still getting used to the tactical element of the sub rule, Jordan came on late in the game against Melbourne and helped turn around a horrible start to contribute to one of Hawthorn’s best quarters of the season. A blitzkrieg of 8.11 in the third quarter was a sight to behold – commentators and fans were stunned at the performance.

The highlight of the season for the number 3 hawk was the round 22 clash against Carlton in which he was required to go toe-to-toe with dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd. What initially looked to be a tagging role quickly saw Jordan become Hawthorn’s most effective midfielder offensively. Judd was made to earn every one of his 15 possessions while burned around the field collecting twice as many possessions, including 8 inside-50s. In a game that was only decided by two goals this match up decided the winner, and the four points could almost be awarded directly to Lewis himself.

Furthermore, the heartbreaking preliminary final loss was another heroic performance. Not only did JL amass 28 disposals and a classy goal – he also laid 8 crunching tackles. This was a complete performance from a man who is an afterthought in discussions on how strong Hwathorn’s midfield is.

Whether his role was to be a defensive half forward, a ball winning midfielder or a tagger Jordan Lewis took his game to a whole new level of professionalism and performance. His exploits often go unnoticed behind Franklin, Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell and Rioli, but he was so important to the great performance of the hawks this season that he may well take a few headlines himself next year.

Friday 17th Feb 2012 - NAB Round Robin - Hawks V North Melb and Hawks V Richmond

Game 1 - Hawks V North Melb
Hawks came out of the blocks on fire and had kicked 5 goals before taking the foot off the accelator and cruised. Jordan was tough at it and kicked a fantastic goal from deep on the boundary late in the game.
His stats were:
4 kicks, 4 handpasses, 3 marks 1 tackle, 1 freekick against and received 0 freekicks. He kicked 1 goal.

Game 2 - Hawks V Richmond
Pretty average game for both the Hawks and Jordan. Hawks got beaten at the end and overall, nothing to get too excited about.
Jordan's stats were:
3 kicks, 3 handpasses, 0 marks 1 hitout 1 tackle, 0 freekicks against and received 2 freekicks.

Saturday March 10 - Round 3 NAB Cup Hawks V Melbourne (Etihad)

Hawks way to strong for the Demons and Jordan played a solid game (but then so did most of the Hawks). Now this stuff is just about over, we can get ready for the real stuff in a couple of weeks.

Jordans stats were:
9 kicks, 8 handpasses, 2 marks, 1 hitout, 1 tackle, 0 freekicks against and received 0 freekicks. He kicked 1 goal.

Friday March 16 - Round 4 NAB Cup Hawks V Fremantle (Pattersons)

A great effort by Jordan, was easily one of the Hawks best. picked up plenty of the ball and was tough as always throughout the game. One incident in the third quarter when Ibbotson of Freo tried to pick him off in a shepherd off the ball, came off second best when Jordan braced for the contact and the Freo player looked like he hit a brick wall. Great game Lewie!

Jordans stats were:
9 kicks, 19 handpasses, 5 marks, 2 hitouts, 1 tackle, 2 freekicks against and received 0 freekicks. He kicked 1 goal and 1 point.

Friday 30 March 2012 Hawks v Collingwood (MCG)

Polarised opinions on the performance from Jordan, though my view was he played as he always does - tough, in and under throwing himself into contests without thought of safety and of course providing the team with plenty of leadership.
He kicked 2 ripping goals that helped with the momentum staying with the Hawks. A great game in terms of leading the team while Hodgey was out. Well done Taz!

His stats were
12 kicks, 5 handpasses, 7 marks, 4 tackles 3 free kicks against and received 0 free kicks. He kicked 2 goals 1 point.

Monday 9th April 2012 Hawks v Geelong (MCG)

Led the team again (with Luke out still) in a stirring performance. Was tough as usual (these games bring out the best in the tough players) and capped it off with 3 goals. While the result overall was disappointing, Jordan had a terrific game and is in some great form at the moment.

His stats were
11 kicks, 9 handpasses, 2 marks, 4 tackles 3 hitouts, 3 free kicks against and received 1 free kick. He kicked 3 goals.

Sunday 15th April 2012 Hawks v Adelaide (MCG)

Backed up his good form so far this season again...Looking forward to repeating this comment every game....great leadership, more goals and tough at it...
Lewie on fire at the moment and please just keep it going...!

His stats were
12 kicks, 12 handpasses, 3 marks, 1 tackles 2 hitouts, 1 free kicks against and received 1 free kick. He kicked 2 goals 1 point.

Saturday 21st April 2012 Hawks v West Coast (Pattisons - Subiaco)

A massively frustrating game for everyone associated with the club. Certainly a servicable game by Jordan, with goals at a premium JL did well to snag one along with a crunching hit on Shuey (that sent the e-girls into a spin)..yet again in our best 3 for the game.

His stats were
15 kicks, 11 handpasses, 7 marks, 2 tackles, 1 free kicks against and received 2 free kicks. He kicked 1 goal.

Sunday 29th April 2012 Hawks v Sydney (Aurora - Tas)

Would rather not comment on this game. In terms of Jordan...

His stats were
5 kicks, 13 handpasses, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 3 hitouts 1 free kicks against and received 2 free kicks. He kicked 2 goals.

Saturday 5th May 2012 Hawks v St Kilda (MCG)

Back to the form he has been showing at the start of the season. Great game by Jordan, closed down Nick Dal Santo and did plenty of attacking too! Nice to see him and the Hawks back on the winners list again!

His stats were
12 kicks, 10 handpasses, 8 marks, 3 tackles 1 hitout, 1 free kicks against and received 0 free kicks.

Friday 11th May 2012 Hawks v Melbourne (MCG)

Another quality game, though not many kicks (he loved the handpass in this game!) Most of the Hawks covered their opponents, though the finishing on the scoreboard was less than average! Jordan great game again.

His stats were
6 kicks, 20 handpasses, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 free kicks against and received 1 free kicks. He kicked 1 goal.

Saturday 19th May 2012 Hawks v Fremantle (Aurora - Tas)

Yep, Jordan in the best for the Hawks again, as the game was a fairly easy day at the office.

His stats were
9 kicks, 17 handpasses, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 2 hitouts 0 free kicks against and received 0 free kicks. He kicked 1 goal and 1 point.
