Jordan McMahon - Biggest butterfly effect in AFL history?

In 2009 Jordan McMahon kicked the winning goal after the siren in round 18 to win the game for the Tigers against Melbourne.

This guaranteed Melbourne a priority pick before the first round, and they used the top two picks to select Scully and Trengrove. This forced Richmond to select Dustin Martin who was perceived to have some "baggage" at the time but still a standout at 3. Richmond would have selected one of Scully or Trengrove had they lost the game and got pick 2.

Dustin Martin has since gone on to be instrumental in their flag year, and some Tiger fans might say they wouldn't have a premiership or potentially two, without him.

Rewind another 2 years, Dogs traded McMahon to Richmond for pick 19 because of his offield issues. The bulldogs then used that pick on Callan Ward. Years later, Callan Ward was signed by GWS as an uncontracted free agent and the Bulldogs we recompensed with pick 6, who they used to select Jackson Macrae.

Jackson Macrae was immense in our flag year and kicked the matchwinner set shot in the dying minutes in the prelim to secure our first GF in 50 odd years. Without him, we don't win a flag.

So all in all, if Jordan McMahon didn't exist, Richmond and the Bulldogs probably don't have flags.

Which other players do you think had such a large ripple effect?

Edit: Round 18 not round 23 - it doesn't matter, in any case the bottom ladder position was decided by this match.

We were always going to take Martin
Richmond would have taken Martin at 1, OP has no idea.

that is unfathomable. Scully was touted as the consensus no.1 pick and the dominant player of his year. He had almost a Jaegar O'Maera level of hype.

Countless articles, and recruiters going on record to say he is the best player of the draft.

Richmond only ramped up their interest in Martin after they found out Melbourne committed to taking Scully and Trengrove at pick 1 and 2. This doesnt suggest Martin would be taken at pick 1 or 2.

There was no round 23 in 2009
Richmond won the game against melbourne after the siren in round 18
You should have a good chat with paul bracken and herman brooks

Nup, it's the death of Ron Barassi Sr.

Father-son rule was basically created for Ron Jr, and you can rattle off the premiership dynasties that were created on the back of that, not to mention all the stuff that Ron Jr has been responsible for.

Who knows how Ron Jr's life would have panned out if the old man came back from the war, or if he went where he was zoned.

So he didn't interview with GWS or the GC on their turf?
martin toured gws at the behest of ralph carr, because carr wanted to play richmond to increase the contract offer that they had on the table all year. richmond didnt try to trade him, neither did martin want to leave. just a gutter crawling manager trying to screw the club.

Is that why GWS pulled out only minutes after Dusty left? It's one thing to threaten to leave, touring an interstate club is something else entirely, you don't do that unless there's an issue, GWS were the ones who backed out, not Martin, but you believe what you want mate.

Father son rule was first bought in in 1949
Ron junior was 13,,

Lol Scully was number 1 by faaarrrrrrr.
At the time I wanted Martin, from the tapes he would have been a standout for the tigers recruiters too I reckon, reason being we were desperate for anyone who could dispose of the ball by foot, and he was clearly a great kick even back in those draft tapes.

Scully might have been the obvious no1 if endurance was more a driving factor for a club?
