No TAC Cup for potential father/son:

"We're fortunate that Jordon's able to play two games with us," Geelong coach Chris Scott said on Tuesday.

"He's going to go off and play with the Gold Coast (in the NEAFL) as well, because he's an eligible (zone) selection for them.

"We're still a long way from deciding whether we want Jordan on our list and he's a long way from choosing Geelong.

"But I think it's nice for our supporters to get the opportunity to see the son of a champion play in the Cats' colours."

Scott says he and the club's other coaches will encourage Bourke to simply learn from his time at Geelong, rather than feel under pressure to perform.

"Jordon's here to get some experience at VFL level and give us the chance to get to know him a little bit better," Scott said

Cats say no to father/son selection.
I don't really get that. I would have thought he'd be worth a late senior spot at least, so I was expecting them to nominate him and hope for no counter-bids. If there was, they'd let the other club take him and go on their merry way. I can't see how Geelong had anything to lose in that scenario.

I'm starting to wonder now, after Cullan last year and now Bourke, if clubs are concerned about a fan backlash if they let another club outbid them on a father/son as opposed to not nominating them at all. It's a lot easier to say "we don't rate them" than it is to say "we don't rate them that highly". I'm just a bit puzzled at this head-scratcher.

Interesting they won't nominate him. Was in AIS squad this year. Would have been worth a last pick. I guess it could be a list management decision and they are not planing on having many picks.

The father son is not a gift scenario anymore.

Cat's don't have room on their list for anything extra at the moment.
I guess that's a viable scenario. If Geelong is only going to be involved in the first three rounds of the draft, picking up a KPF they rated in the 5th through 7th rounds doesn't make sense, period.

And unusually for us, the one thing we dont need is a KPF. Got 2 in the senior team, 2 ruck/forwards, plus 3 in the VFL.

Obviously if we rated him highly we would have done it differently, but clearly we dont.

If Jordan is not selected in the main Draft then there is a chance he could still end up at Geelong as a F/S on the rookie list. But good luck to Jordan whatever happens and I wouldn't be surprised to see him picked up by one of the Qld clubs.

I think the reason why the Cats have backed off him is that we don't really need any KP forwards at the moment. We need defenders and midfielders and Jordan isn't either of those from my understanding.

His problem is he'd be competing with Walker for a list spot. Walker showed enough this year to suggest he's more than worthy of a spot on the senior list ahead of a guy that's only borderline to get picked in the draft. Even Burbury is probably ahead of him in terms of getting a senior list spot. I'd expect us to rookie him if he isn't picked up by anyone else but we just don't have the room on the senior list to take him.

I don't think it is a case of not having the room on the list it is more that we don't really need another KP Forward with the likes of Walker, Brown, Vardy etc already well ahead of him. We need defenders with Scarlett gone and J Hunt & Enright to go in the next 1-2 years.

I think they do it before the Rookie Draft as you cannot know who is going to be left over at this point until the other drafts have been completed.

That makes sense. Cats might only see him as a rookie type, and not want to hold him back from a crack at a main list slot somewhere else. (That or they don't rate him)

Nope, you need to nominate players for the rookie list at the father/son meeting prior to the ND/trade week. You "indicate your interest" in taking them as a rookie then, if they fall through the ND, you can list them directly as a rookie.

Well actually it works out a lot better for the club with borderline picks like Bourke under the new system.

Last year we got Jed Bews with pick 86, as he was not bid on by anyone else, while in the past we would have had to take him with our 3rd round pick if we wanted him.

We are just in a tight position list wise. We've probably got 5 spots to fill this year. There's likely to be a rookie promotion or two. Any free agent or trade in and we will have a max 3 picks in the draft. The club obviously doesn't rate Bourke any better than what we could get at 36/55 in the draft.

We just don't need a KP forward at all.

Podsiadly, Hawkns, Vardy, Walker, Kersten, Brown, Hamling and most of them look to have AFL level talent. We're crying out for midfielders.
