List Mgmt. Jordon Sweet is a Keeper worth a contract Bevo

That's pretty much what Stef Martin will be next year.
Put him on the rookie list, his salary isn't counted in the soft cap, and he may even play a couple of games for us.
Sweet showed a bit at the start of 2021 the dropped off in form as big developing guys often do

My real concern is we have very little depth and injury cover in the ruck area so really do want more support in that department
Yeah we aren’t going to be able to find a better ruck coach than Stef anywhere. He’s made a great career as an undersized ruckman through work ethic & body work and is a very smart guy. He’s also played against every one of the top ruckman for years compared to a guy like King who hasn’t rucked at AFL level for a decade.

5:55, the moment Sweet consigned himself to playing vfl for the rest of the year.

On a serious note, if he had dominated the vfl he would have been in line for a recall, but it was always going to be an uphill battle to win back the respect of the coaches after his effort against Melbourne. Unfortunately he didn't dominate after getting dropped.

Anyways apologies for the negativity but I feel like this particular effort has been glossed over.

I'm not at all concerned about a 200cm tyro ruckman fluffing a ground ball, as face-palming an effort as it looked. That's not what he's on the field for.

I'm more concerned that he needs to develop his around the ground work - spoils, marks, covering in defence, providing a target down the line and for the kick-ins, etc. If he can become a bit more prolific there (look no further than Gawn for a role model) then we have a player.

People underrate ruckmen because a good ruck (eg Hickey) can basically neutralise a great one (eg Grundy) if that's their goal, so ******* commentators start questioning what the difference is and whether to bother with a specialist ruck at all. The difference is when you put a great ruckman up against a below average one they're guaranteed to be BOG because its a one on one contest all game with no hope of a chop out. When you play against a guy that you know you can dominate physically, it's very easy to start getting creative. Sweet is average size for an AFL ruckman with no athleticism, English lacks strength and doesn't really know the position, Stef Martin is 47. Having Sweet is better than not having Sweet, but we have really sh*t the bed by not even trying to get in a stopgap AFL standard ruck in the past 5 years. We don't just lack depth, we lack a competent first option.
Not my understanding at all.
We failed to secure a decent one but not because we weren't trying. For example, I gather we were into Martin for at least a couple of years before he finally joined us.

Sorry dw but that was a completely putrid effort. Putting your head over the ball and attacking it is a non-negotiable regardless of role/position. Bloody oath the coaches would have seen that and taken into account in their judgement of Sweet.

Are you saying he lacked ticker?

I didn't see it like that at all. There was nobody bearing down on him so - quite appropriately - he wouldn't have been anticipating a hit.

Have another look. He made a snap judgement that he'd swat it forward where Bont (just out of screen until the last instant) would probably have swept it away and we'd all be saying it was an inspired move. Instead the ball took a sharp break because of the backspin and he missed it completely.

I have no special brief for Sweet but I think he's being accused of more than he's guilty of. Yes it looked awful but IMO he was merely guilty of trying something beyond his usual range of capabilities, which clearly don't include dealing with a wickedly bouncing ground ball.

He didn't to put his head over it and put himself in a potentially vulnerable position. The fact that nobody was even around him made it worse.

It's not like I want him hung drawn and quartered. These things happen sometimes in footy, but it's certain that the MC didn't look too fondly on it.

Sure thing Dazza that's why Sweet got a 2 year match in the main squad

Rightly or wrongly he is not a player type Bevo rates. Bevs ended the careers of better rucks during his time with us.

I like your idea about Martin as a playing Ruck Coach sort of like Mumford, space still there for Dogs to pick another Ruck Option up

Late in Draft
Rookie Draft
International Rookie B - (Basketball)

Start bloody playing him. Not rating ruckman hurt us this year. I know we won the flag in 2016 with a lot of Bont and Jongy and others going ‘3rd man up’ and Bevo was filthy they changed the rules after then. But we must adapt or waste our wonderful onball brigade.

If this was the plan yes we should have been playing Sweet all along
Playing Young out of position to the point he wanted leave was wrong
2016 had a lot of Tom Boyd and Jordan Roughead too, sadly that changed quickly
Bevo must build a bridge and get over it

Yes he needs to get hold of Gawn's running program and smash it out this off season. So he can get too enough contests, he has the ability but has too get there to influence the contest. Fitness is his biggest challenge needs to significantly up his running capacity to take over the No 1 Ruck mantle

205cm - average size at 23? What does big look like?
