Write-up by don patch sword (who was a big fan late in the season):

Pick 18 - Port Adelaide - Josh Battle
Team: Dandenong Stingrays
Height: 192 Weight: 90
DOB: 1/9/98

TAC Games: 8
AVG Disposals: 13.2
Goals: 24

Player Traits: Jack Darling, Tom Lynch(ADEL)
Position: Forward

Bio: Josh is a powerful forward who has a great work rate and is a very smart forward. He uses his size and fitness to his advantage being dangerous close to goal and outside 50. He is undersized for a key position player but can still beat bigger defenders.

Josh close to goal uses his strength and speed of the mark to his advantage. He hasn't got great agility when the ball hits the deck but if he gets a full head of steam he can clear a path and make an impact. He is an accurate shot at goal closer to goal but does struggle outside 50.

He has a tremendous work rate and will lead all the way up to the defense to give an option and generally leads to the right spots up the ground. He uses the ball well and is creative when the ball is in his area he has even been used for stints in the midfield where he wants to develop his footy.

His agility isn't great but can fake and balk pretty well and when he is up and running he can do anything. He can get hot headed and give away free kicks for being overzealous in a tackle. His size is an issue if he is to play as a main key position target at AFL level.

Josh is the best pure forward in this draft he knows how to lead to the right spots, uses the ball well and an accurate shot at goal. Competitive and driven he can play senior footy early.

Some more quotes from don patch sword over the last month or so:

"Langford, Laverde and Redman don't play anything like Battle. Battle makes up for his short comings with elite endurance, forward craft and good and smart ball user and he put pressure on the defenders with his strength in one on ones and he will hurt you with tackles and if your sitting in the hole he will run through you without hesitation."

"Yeah heard saints where impressed with him at training (last preseason) he took a few of their better players to the cleaners in marking contests."

"The claim that Battle is 194 is from a family contact."

"Apparently Battle is 194cm and not 192 as listed. That doesn't suprise me since he looked taller than that when I watched him"

"Just re-watched Vic Country vs Allies ill go through the best players from each team:

Josh Battle - Kicked 4 goals and could have had more he worked extremely hard and done alot of good chase downs and really used his body well."

He said in an interview that he's 193cm so I imagine he knows and was over 90kgs but can't remember what maybe 92.

A forward who is a natural footballer with an already big tank? He sounds like the anti Spencer White pick. I have a good feeling about this pick for us. Trout and co. likely learned a lot from Spencer not making it and realised natural footballers with good endurance are better bets than athletic freaks with potential.

Someone completely committed to making it and follows an impeccable training regime, sacrifices partying with mates for the chance to make an AFL squad, plays one role very well and has never really been tried as a big mid or wingman. I have a very good feeling too. A sober Fev is my hope. these days everyone thinks if you are 1cm shorter than Tex Walker it makes you a third tall but this guy has been playing KPF a doing it well. Members plays part time as a lead up KPF and does the job at 188cm so it's all a bit arbitrary. He looks quality and has good attributes away from footy and has a game that should translate well.

Just echoing some other posters here. The guy is 18 - give him a break. I shudder what you all would have thought about me at that age. Some folks might need to get a grip!!!!

If he has grown and continues to grow to 193/194 with his endurance well that is exciting. We have no cover if one of our 3 forwards go down, (apart from Roo going back which is only for one more year maybe two). Josh is completing year 12 next year so likely only a bit of football. So he'll be full time in 2018. A very good pickup IMO.

I'm excited we have cover in the fwd line now.

We look so even across our list now...

One area that I've previously thought Trout focused too much one when weighing up recruits is if they fit the narrow paradigm of being a Good Bloke, so the flog factor doesn't worry me with any of his choices, he's all over that. Christian Petracca says Hi.

Found this write-up by grundog from about 11-12 months ago, so at the end of his underage year:

Josh Battle
Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country
Key Forward/Medium Forward
Height: 194 cm Weight: 89 kg D.O.B: 1/9/98

Crashing packs, taking contested marks and inserting himself on contests. This is what Josh Battle does best. Josh Battle is a Key Forward in the Jack Darling mould who makes his presence felt in every game he plays. Last year after a great u16 Championships he got turned away from the AIS Academy with some work to do. This rejection put a fire in his belly, leading to him to have a great year as a centre half forward for the Dandenong Stingrays and Haileybury college. He kicked 16 goals in 11 games this year for the Dandenong Stingrays, with his best haul of five coming in round two against an undersized Bendigo Pioneers outfit. He continued to impress throughout the whole year leading to him being selected in the Vic Country u18 squad. Although he didn’t play in the carnival, it's a good sign for a bottom ager. In my opinion his greatest asset is not the scoreboard impact, it's his contested marking. Battle in the games i've seen he can take many great contested marks and crashes packs like no other. His hands have vice like strength when he's got a hold of it and he won’t drop it. Battle is also a team player. Josh can set up teammates with his disposal, giving his team a better chance at a score. During the Allies v Academy game this year he played at centre half forward and set up his teammates on many occasions showcasing the what he brings to a team. This team first attitude is something that most key forward at his age have. The only knock I have on him is that he isn’t very tall. He’s not going to be a towering figure but he can play as a second tall forward or even as that mobile 3rd tall. I'm not saying he can’t be a key target at the next level but he's not going to be that tall forward who will pinch hit in the ruck or tower over defenders. Josh looks likely to become a likely prospect up forward who has a massive presence.

I couldn't think of a more appropriate name for this kid. Anyone playing on Battle will know they're in a battle pretty quickly and he is going to leave plenty of defenders sore and sorry. With Paddy and him crashing packs and clunking marks and Mav chinning anyone who tries to stop them, we have a bruising forward line up. Sammy Hammil will be loving this, and it's beautiful to see a forward line in his mould. We just need a new Milne and we're set, hopefully Lonie can get close.
