Greensborough has secured a major weapon in the NFL Division 1 premiership fight.

Two-time Richmond premiership star Josh Caddy will make his Borough debut against Hurstbridge at War Memorial Reserve on Saturday.

Caddy announced his AFL retirement last month and speculation was rife as to his local footy return.

Greensborough won the race to his signature, fighting off several rivals.

Brother Saul has played at North Heidelberg and Heidelberg while nephew Nate made his senior debut for Bundoora earlier this season.

He was an Eltham junior before being taken by Gold Coast with pick No. 7 in 2010.

The signing also puts the Borough firmly in the premiership race.

Greensborough beat Montmorency in Round 4, drew with West Preston-Lakeside and came within four points of Bundoora.

Caddy’s addition to the Borough line-up could be season changing if he can remain fit.

The 174-gamer will line-up alongside former Carlton and Brisbane midfielder and 2019 Rosbrook Medallist Tom Bell in green.

The pair could form a potent one-two punch rotating between midfield and attack.

The Borough already possesses one of the strongest defences in the competition with Nick Riddle, skipper Jack Johnston, Billy Bedford and Angus Seivers, while Richmond VFL-listed young gun Tom Brindley is one of the most versatile players in the competition.

Greensborough president Russell Grubb said Caddy’s impact would be significant.

“We are excited to have Josh join our club, his experience, talent and skills will benefit our team immensely,” he said.

“His past family connections with the club and the culture of the group was a big influence in his decision to join GFC.”

“He has fit in like a glove and the players are super excited.”

Caddy is the sixth freshly ex-AFL player to join the Northern Football League this season, joining David Zaharakis, Lin Jong, Brayden Sier, Neville Jetta and Jacob Townsend.
