Josh Caddy - The one that got away

I think he's still got plenty to offer as a medium sized marking forward. We don't have room for that anymore. He lost his place when we brought Lynch in. Dimma said himself we can't play Jack, Caddy, Dusty and Lynch in the same forward line because we lose too much in pressure and tackling. It had to Caddy that made way. Credit to him for re-inventing himself as a winger to earn another premiership. Unfortunately he's far too slow to play wing in todays footy.

He can still play at the level in a team that needs that type of forward target and would be a decent cheap pickup trade wise. They'd just have to pick up all of or most of his salary.

Thought he looked really good 4 weeks ago against Adelaide. Played midfield with all or mids out and had a team high 24 touches in a big win. Was ok against the bombers on the wing, but he has to play midfield.

Geelong supporters probably don’t watch our finals back, especially the 2017 qualifying final, Caddy was everywhere that night, fond memories watching him celebrate after the game.

Cats didn’t want him so don’t know why they would even care to be honest, I’m happy he came to the Tigers, like it or not he’s a part of one of the best teams ever.

Seriously?

FWIW IIRC he finished 17th in the 2017 B&F.

By definition what you have written is completely contradicted by the assessment of his importance to the team by the club’s coaching panel.

He got 12 touches and one goal in the 2017 GF. That made him one of the five least important performers out of the Tiger 22 that day.

He was also quiet in the 2017 PF. In the QF against Geelong he got 17 and 2 which is okay but hardly phenomenal.

Richmond easily still wins the 2017 flag without Josh Caddy.
17th in Richmond's B&F would be a top 10 in Geelong B&F

“the 2017 qualifying final, Caddy was everywhere that night”

Dude, please. Let your team’s victories be their own reward. You won. You don’t have to make stuff up. He had 17 touches and two goals. That’s good, not great. Dusty would vomit if he only had that output. :)

The match reports don’t have him amongst the BEST players.

I remember the other final he played against us, the 2019 PF, and he did very little in that game. I wasn’t going to be surprised if he didn’t get selected for the GF considering he had failed to make the best 22 earlier that season. Thankfully for him he didn’t get dropped and actually played much better in the GF. :thumbsu: It was a good comeback story.

FWIW he was considered one of your worst players in the 2018 PF loss to Collingwood.

”Cats didn’t want him so don’t know why they would even care to be honest”

This thread is directed at us. Why wouldn’t we want to make our thoughts known?

I personally was a little surprised we did the trade because I thought ”a bird in the hand”. Why give away a locked-in best 18 player for a pick outside the top 20 and also turn a 50s pick into a 60s pick? It seemed like a bad deal to me.

I was wrong and not because Brandan Parfitt seems like he has a promising career and did get votes from The Age in his most recent game and Joshua was apparently very poor in his last appearance.

IMO whether Parf became a Hall of Famer, or if he’d been delisted two years ago without playing a senior game, shouldn’t be part of the discussion. Richmond never had him. It wouldn’t only be relevant if we had the US sports rule where trades occur at the draft. Like how IIRC the Hornets drafted Kobe and then traded him to the Lakers for Divac. Or Parf’s name should only be brought up if RFC recruiters said that they would have definitely chosen him if the Tigers had kept that pick.

Put the specific players of Josh Caddy and Brandan Parfitt (also Narkle and Graham) aside because what this trade is about IMO is what do you do with a player who is no longer young but is in the best 18 but who has hit a serious ceiling. The type of player who seems to play a few good games a season but has not improved. I don’t know what I would do. It would be a very bad look if the draftee is a total bust but at the same time you’d be totally furious if another season passes where the 25 year old you kept still hasn’t improved and you know the player you would have chosen with the pick you would have received for him is dominating.

Josh Caddy will always be a serious mystery to me. There were games where he’d be close to BOG and you’d think he’d finally arrived (there was a Saturday afternoon game vs WB @ KP where he was just spectacular and might have come close to 40 touches IIRC) but then nothing would happen in the next month. His first half of the 2018 season had some breathtaking games but the second half was utterly mediocre.

Is Josh Caddy a good player who played way too many poor games given his talent level or was he a good ordinary player who just fluked the odd kickass performance?
