Get Jack to speak to him...

Jack - "I'm not saying that if you don't nominate us you'll get hurt, I am saying that it would be bad if you didn't nominate us and then got hurt";)

Damien Barret has said on AFL access all areas that his mail is that It's between us and Geelong for Caddy's services, no real indication of who he prefers.

Maybe our cunning plan is to offload Hamish to Geelong so they can't afford Caddy? I can't really see how they can afford both without giving up some talent (I mean seriously established players too, not just draft picks).

Unless he nominates us I think it's nailed on he's Geelong bound. They can get the deal done quickly with the compo pick and his management will know this.

Adam White also said on RSN radio this morning, Essendon still all over Caddy.........
How they get a first round pick better than 14 I don't know. They going to give up a Zaharakis or Heppel?

No idea BTron, they were talking about Goddard, and I wasn't interested in that, then out of the blue, Whitey mentions some trade deal to gain Caddy, I should have listened more intently

No worries Boomer, it was a rhetorical question anyway. I just can't see them satisfying GC. They don't want players and a pick, they want a pick and Essendon have nothing that they are prepared to loose that will nab them a pick better than ours.

Barrett also said on Access All Areas that apparently we are "quietly confident"

I think it's pretty well known by now that our meeting with him went well, but if he's prepared to go to Geelong I think that's where he'll end up. Compo pick is ideal for GC - it means they free up a list spot this year, and if Geelong drop in 2013 they could end up with a top ten pick.

This is based on nothing but gut feeling, but I think we need Caddy to say North and North only.

It can be used in either 2013 or 2014, the expansion compos have a 5 year shelf life.

Still if the Cats get Caddy he will strengthen their side meaning the Cats could finish between 1st and 5th in the next 2 years.

That means 14 this year is probably the better deal for GC. Also I doubt they can afford to lose a quality midfielder and not replace him for 2 years.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Yes, the compo pick is always going to be a gamble. But with high risk comes high reward. If we fall, GC could be looking at pick 8-10 (perhaps lower). If we finish around 8th, they get pick 13-15 anyway.

I doubt Caddy will lift us from 7th to top 4 in his third year (although, would love to be proven wrong!). With our recent retirees and aging stars declining form, its not that unreasonable to assume we will slide rather than improve in the short term.

Plus the added bonus of not having to take a player back this year, which fits in with GC trying to trim the list. Hence St Kilda with the Goddard compo pick may still be in with a shout.

Nah, the FA compo picks can't be banked. Have to be used in the year they're given.

AFL Free Agency, Trade, Draft & Season News

Geelong & North Melbourne are in prime position to secure the services of Josh Caddy.
North Melbourne have apparently offered pick 14.
Geelong have apparently offered either there Round 1 Compensation pick or there pick 15.

14 > 15 or the compo pick if they plan to use the pick this year. That is a bonus.

We have to look out for what other clubs are trading, if any club is keen to dish off a lower first round pick there is the danger that Geelong will fish to be part of that trade to get the better first round pick.

tbh I don't think the Suns are in any danger of not finding players to shed. They have 15 kids that are not rookies that have played under 10 games in the last two years. Some are development players and a few are KPPs who will take some time, there is also O'Meara there. Fraser has retired and Brown/Brennan/Krak aren't terribly useful.

They will just have the luxury of shedding the dead wood and replacing it with quality prospects.

Perhaps Hamish fits into the Caddy deal somehow as Geelong are keen on him? Or alternatively a 3 way deal including Pederson to Melb / Coll and possible draft picks to be traded to GC?
