....still a long way to go.....

Seriously, if Caddy would prefer North.....someone needs to get in his ear to put some pressure on GC (re my Carey comment).....Pick 12 vs 14 is SFA and therefore he (his manager) needs to get more active.

Geelong is offering their compensation pick for losing Gary Ablett which is not active for this draft.

The saints however are happy to part ways with their first round pick in this years draft at no 12, which could be all the difference

Geelong's is also attractive as they can bank it and keep a high draft pick up the sleeve for a year or two.

I fear we are a bit behind both with #14 and to be fair, so we should be given we are talking about a #7 with two years development and nothing to suggest he won't live up to #7 quality

IF we've been 'quietly confident', you'd assume we'd have plans for countering higher bids from other clubs that we've been fully aware Josh has been talking to. This includes our financial offer.

While I wouldn't expect us to break the bank, I'd rather pay someone like Caddy - a midfielder on par with JZ and Cunners, overs in comparison with the last two years of SuperGav's contract, paying Hale to play for Hawthorn and paying H to play for Werribee. Perspective. I'd be saying to Josh, unless it's truly unreasonable, we'll trump other legitimate offers IF you tell GC it's only us.

F*** him - if he cant choose us outright - see u later. We can get a quality kid at that pick anyway. Hes obviously done this to assist the negotiation and final result for GC - however it f*** around with his perspective club. You cant please everyone.

he must not of been much of a supporter if he hasnt flat out said i want to go to north
also with his family history at the club you would think his family would be encouraging him to get to north
doesnt make sense to me if it was me id already be waiting at arden st to sign papers next monday

If he feels Geelong are the better fit for him then club loyalties should have no bearing whatsoever. It's a job above all else.

As much as I want Caddy, the BFNAAK and grandfather connection can only go so far. It is his career and he needs to make the best decision to suit him.

I reckon what we are offering is a great fit for him but he is well informed and if we miss out then so be it.

Yep. I wouldn't have any issue going the distance with Gold Coast (within reason) on this one. It's not like the Colbert trade where we paid overs for a 26 year old coming off a knee reco (and still got terrific service). We've also freed up a bit of dough, as you mentioned. I've never paid much interest to trade week so I'm not sure how it all works but I'm sure it's in his interests to listen to what's being offered across the board, but with a club of choice in the back of his mind.

yeah but if he chooses cats its for money not the best fit for him all there guns will be gone
roos have a bunch of young kids around his age on their way up

Surely surely he wont go to the saints though. Goddard is gone, N Roo has 2 seasons left which will have reduced input each year and the young brigade are hardly guns. Saints look to have a few years in the bottom 10 to come.

I wouldnt be surprised if he nominates us and Geelong but if he nominates the Saints as well then I dont think we want him as that would be purely monetary driven. I hope this gets sorted early next week too in case the club is waiting on this before making other inquiries.

Trade period doesn't start until the 8th so its all speculation.
October 8 - Commencement of Gillette AFL Trade Period.

Its quite clear that GC don't want to get screwed over with this which I interpret as them wanting fair trade for a kid that has a fair amount of potential and a couple of year development under his belt.

I can't see it getting to the 8th and the deal being done that day, in fact I think that would be fairly short sighted for GC to do that. The potential for pick acquired through trade to factor into this scenario is high swap of second round for third round or some such.
ie. we trade a player requesting trade for a second round pick we on trade that pick to GC to upgrade their round 3 pick to a round 2 pick, completely possible, completely unforeseeable now.

The team leading the race on Oct 3 may not be the team with the best offer when it comes to the crunch.
What happens if October 7 X player from X club says I want out and only to go to Geelong. You think Geelong aren't going to look at it if the player is of quality? Of course they are.

The simple fact is we won't get him. If we do I will eat my shorts.

North have a history of not being very active during trade periods recently, and if we are we always seem to get trumped when showing interest in any reasonable prospects.

We have done OK from the drafts but if Brad wants to get North to the next level we need to start adding elite players to the group who can help us do that. I can't see us getting there on organic growth with our current list.

It is disappointing that we can't or won't compete with the big teams during trade period - but to me this simply is a true reflection of where we sit in the pecking order on field as well.

We will require evidence of this happening should we obtain Caddy.

As I've just said on the Drafts & Trading thread, if we paid SuperGav $300K (someone suggested Geelong has offered something over this to Josh) to keep him from the GC clutches, it would be nice to think we'd pay a bit more to get Caddy here from the GC.

But if Emma Quayle's tweet is accurate, surely the particulars of the contract (term/value) are not an issue and it is more so which of the 3 clubs can satisfy Gold Coast the best?

To be fair, Cats were more competitive in finals than we were this year, so its not surprising they are front runners.
Their midfield is more experienced, so Caddy may want to learn off Bartel and Selwood.
Guess it comes down to playing with a younger midfield or an aging one at the cats or saints

Yes, if Josh says "any of these three clubs", bowing to conscience or GC pressure or whatever. What we need to do is 'incentivize' (forgive me) Josh to choose just us, beyond just 'family tradition'.

Lets not forget though, that a few of our young blokes will be coming out of contract next year. We would want to pay them what they deserve.
