Because Caddy is out of contract and would be forced into the draft (and he doesn;t want to go to Melbourne) if no trade with his nominated club pans out. While Dawes is simply looking for more opportunities now that Collingwood have Lynch. Much like Hamish nominating Geelong.

We have been through these scenarios before.

Caddy and manager talk to the club he wants to go to, lets say North for example.

North makes sure they keep $1.5m free in our cap this year by back-ending enough remaining unsigned players over the next few years. It shouldn't be hard given we don't use most of our marketing allowance, of around $500k, have players yet to sign, some that might be going and have Hale and Urq off our cap.

We keep a spot on our list free after the draft.

He nominates for the PSD for a 1 year contract at $1.5m. If he gets to us, it is renegotiated to a 5 year contract for $1.5m, it will all count in our 2013 salary cap. If someone else has the space and takes him then he is going to get $1.5m for a one year apprenticeship and the club who screwed him gets zip.

We could also agree to review his salary after 3 years, and increases to his salary would go onto the salary cap. You just want the initial contract to be out of the league of other clubs.

Generally clubs don't keep $1.5m free because you have to pay 95% of the cap, they are usually finalising their list around that time.

Just on Ch7. GC wants two first round picks for Caddy!! Pls tell me I heard wrong....?

Two first rounders for JC himself sounds cheap for the second coming.......
I was told he would be here within a thousand years in primary school, turns out they were right :thumbsu:

BOG Easter round ;)

Really not sure of what all the fuss is about Caddy, yes he has potential and yes he could improve us, but I think selling the farm will backfire on us. FFS if I was Hansen and getting offered the same or less than Caddy I'd be packing my bags too!

The Age this morning doesn't even have us in the hunt for Caddy. We are either playing this amazingly well behind the scenes and are going to pull of the heist of the year, or all the inside info is wrong. Hope its a heist.

The Age said the same old thing of it's between us, St Kilda and Geelong.

"St Kilda is also one of three clubs - with Geelong and North Melbourne - bidding for Josh Caddy, but the Suns alarmed all three clubs yesterday by insisting they would require two first-round draft picks for the out-of-contract midfielder. All three clubs have said they would not trade two picks for him."

The mail I'm getting from someone who is actively involved in trade week (for Collingwood) is that Caddy wants to go to North but Gold Coast aren't happy with 14 and want Geelong's compo pick.

Geelong will either drop out of the race for Caddy or pick swap with us to get the Hamish deal done (Hamish and 14 for Compo and 36). We would then on trade the compo for Caddy.

Not sure North are too keen on giving up Hamish for 36 and a pick swap though.

I really can't see Hamish going for a second or third rounder this early into the period unless it is linked to Caddy. Just makes no sense otherwise.

The quiet talk seems pretty consistent.

Much as I hate taking anything from Melbourne, I agreed when they said all that mattered out of trade/draft season is what you have in your hand at the end - it's academic who goes for what in individual deals. Pick 36 isn't great for H, even if he is a well paid reserves player, but if it oils the wheels to get Geelong giving up Caddy and helping us get him - and if Bryce is confident he can draft us another good player at 36 - no-one will get too hung up on it.

Seems entirely viable.

We are still getting dudded over Hamsih. B.Scott had better have a ruckman somewhere up his sleeve.

It was reported yesterday by Trade Week Radio that Geelong actually offered their compo pick and GC wanted more.

GC just trying to act tough but the deal will get done for far less than the two first rounders they want.

This may be a stupid question - but if GC end up with Geelongs compo pick, what dictates the pick number in the draft next year? Is it based on where GC finish or where Geelong finish on the ladder?
If it is still based on Geelong's ladder position it wouldn't be any better than our pick 14 surely?

Funny thing is - if GC do end up with the Compo pick that means that they got Abblett plus the compo pick that Geelong received for losing him...

It gives them some flexibility in relation to list movements. They can keep it for next year or the year after so don't have to cut a player to make the space to use it this year.

It's based on where Geelong finish.

The compo is based on where Geelong finish in 2013 or 2014.

From memory the Cats got two compos for Ablett and have already traded the first one to GC so they will have received both. However the GC traded a first round pick for the first compo and for this one they will have to give up Caddy who was pick 7.

As has been posted previously, GC are posturing.

I reckon they're aware they'll lose more players as they get older as a club, and want to ensure that in future deals, they don't get ****ed out of good deals.

They will end up getting less than they are asking for and rightly so. They're just trying to act the hardarse now to ensure good deals in future.
