It's fantastic having so many posters with their fingers right on the inner scrotum pulses of so many clubs.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As I've just said on the Drafts & Trading thread, if we paid SuperGav $300K (someone suggested Geelong has offered something over this to Josh) to keep him from the GC clutches, it would be nice to think we'd pay a bit more to get Caddy here from the GC.

Interesting article re caddy http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/149099/default.aspx says they are still after Tippett but their young kids are not on the table. This may devalue a compensation pick if they need a pick to give to Adelaide, I doubt they want to be giving their first round pick.

Says Caddy still hasn't nominated a club.

Would it be prudent to be talking to Adelaide about what they would find as a good compensation for Tippett and see if we can sneak in a 3 way trade which involves the exchange of Caddy and Tippett?

That's just it.

Until he nominates a club/s, the speculation will continue to be that.

Speculation.

But I think his trade will be important. Will GC give a shit if they get pick 11, 12, 13 or 14 if they are just going to give it to Adelaide? I think GC will be happy if someone can help them facilitate the Tippett trade.

Of course everything is speculation until the deals are done. :p

Let's say that Caddy comes out and nominates just North or Geelong alone.

There is no chance in hell the Suns will chuck a hissy fit and allow him to walk into the draft, because they wanted the Saints' pick 12 or Carlton's pick 11.

But yeah Tas, with about 4 threads on Caddy, and hundreds of posts. We should wait until he nominates, which will probably be around the 8th. :thumbsu:

Hasn't that been the consensus from the word go? I know there have been some ridiculous comments, but the intelligent people have been saying that from day one.

I think from time to time some people talk like they know what is going on, which makes it sound more like speculation. I have nfi but I think if we are on the front foot we can make our hand better. I am not sure if waiting around for him to pick us is the best course of action, we waited for Gunston and he picked someone else. :p

I think Caddy could serve us better, he gives us partly what we're missing, but If it get's to the usual player picking club syndrome, I'll be quite happy to stick with what we've got. Believe it or not, it's not that bad.

I agree. I was saying to a Cats poster that I am not convinced Caddy is a whole lot better a prospect than the kids around our first round pick look at being. There is just that known quantity in terms of the role he can step into and he is 2 years in development already. I don't know why Geelong are chasing Boak, Caddy, McIntosh.

They have 15 players who will be 28+ on their list this season. A few of those have already hung up the boots, a lot more will over the next few years. I don't think an extra developed mid is going to stop what is going to be a period of rebuilding. They have good quality kids but they are not exposed to the best of the opposition like our kids have been for a couple of years now.

The 2012 side - Scarlett, Wjcinski, Podsiadly, Enright, Chapman, Corey, Hunt, Stephenson, Johnson, Bartel, Kelly, Byrnes, Mackie and Stokes. That is a lot of their front line a fair bit of their depth. They don't need one quality midfielder, they need to put 20 good kids on their list over the next 2 or 3 years, I don't see how paying a premium for older players is going to get it done.

It is different for us, we are only looking to fill a couple of spots.

Try the Geelong supporters in the D&T thread. Tef will attest to them seeming to think that Caddy is theirs already...

If I may - it appears that the club has 2 aims in this FA/trade/draft period. One is to attempt to patch some immediate holes with the loss of Scarlett (Rivers) and Ottens (McIntosh) from last year in the hope that while we have that 1999 and 2001 draft group of Enright, Chapman, Corey, Bartel, Kelly and S.Johnson on our list we can still challenge for a flag. Maybe they are being unrealistic. However I think the hope is that our kids (of which we have many) may develop again next year and contribute even more significantly.

Failing that we need to obviously address some of the areas of need. We do need another big bodied mid to replace the likes of Ling and Corey. Caddy seems to fit the bill. Him alone won't do it but hopefully Horlin-Smith will come through with Christensen, Duncan and having Varcoe back to get a decent young midfield (with Selwood of course) together.

That I assume is their thinking.

I think you guys should knock your socks off patching holes with free agent players who are only going to cost money that is freed up from other players retiring. There is no opportunity cost really other than a spot on the list. I think having a competitive side is a much better learning environment so I can see the point of picking up Rivers.

If this draft was weak then that would also make sense to shop around for players on the move. But, the word is this draft is pretty good. Boak would have cost a fair bit to lure. I would be surprised if we let McIntosh walk cheaply. Will your or our pick be enough for GC? I dunno, I just feel the successful model of Geelong was drafting big batches of kids over 2-3 years and convert surplus senior players into extra draft picks. I think the drafts over the next couple of years would have been a similar environment to reload like that.

Can you contend with some patch up jobs? Possibly. Who can say really. But, it takes a lot of synergy to be a good team, the more that leave the harder it is for people to step into those roles. Swans are a good example that can do it but I am not sure others have had much luck doing the same. Who knows, perhaps it will work, who can say really. It just seems odd, Cats have gone to youth and it seems they are changing strategy, just seems odd to me.

As their Ablett trade?

Meh. They could do better.

(Read this, Geelong)

Word is that Caddy has seen Geelong, and was impressed, and has seen St Kilda, and the Saints were heavily into him after interviews. Apparently the Saints will be pushing hard for him, FWIW.

No offence (and I know I'll get destroyed by this) but I can't see him ending up with you guys if Saints and Cats are willing to play ball? Tell me if I'm wrong, but the Saints have one (potentially two) first round picks before you guys, and the Cats have their Gazza pick? What would you guys be offering them that those (purportedly very keen) clubs can't? And from his experience last year (and from what has been stated), I think it's highly unlikely he will tell the GC he will only go to one or two of those three clubs. He won't want to risk missing out on coming to Victoria for the second year in a row.

pick 14 and a fringe player, the picks between the 3 clubs only differ by 1 or 2 spots.
Caddy barracked for north as a kid so hopefully he nominates us and we get the deal done.
He was apparently very impressed with our facilities also

Understand that...but surely the GC would prefer the Saints pick 12 or 13 (as opposed to what will probably end up being your pick 15 - not 14 after the Goddard compensation) plus potentially a fringe player from the Saints? If Caddy is interested and keen on all three clubs, even if one is slightly more than the other, I don't think the GC could give two hoots if it means getting a draft pick up to three higher. Whichever way it's cut, it just doesn't seem likely that a pick 14-15 will trump a pick 12-13...

Whether they would then prefer the Cats Ablett compo pick (assuming they're willing to part with it) is another question entirely. That depends on what the club preference is in terms of their long term strategy etc - whereas it seems pretty obvious to me when looking at two picks in the same draft, they're going to opt for the earlier pick.

Oh, and like I said, Caddy (or his management) have apparently basically stated that he WON'T just nominate a single club in case there is a repeat of what happened with him and Essendon last year and he ends up being stuck on the Gold Coast.

So he was impressed with the St Kilda facilities at Moorabbin or those at Seaford? wonder if he was as equally impressed with the long drive down there? on the other hand, Nth Melbournes ground is just around the corner to EVERYTHING!!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I prefer talking to Geelong fans.

I said he was impressed with Geelong, not St Kilda. I said St Kilda were impressed by HIM. I haven't heard one way or the other what he thought of St Kilda, other than the fact he had an interview.

It was a question of what you guys can offer? A legitimate one. I just think of the three clubs the Saints and Cats have more, but I'm not so up to date with what you guys are willing to deal with etc...Thought Nth board would be the best place to ask.
